✅ Breaking News - MARTIN KEOWN: Forward thinking is the key for Liverpool in Munich - Duration: 2:26.

Everyone thought the absence of Virgil van Dijk would cost Liverpool defensively. While the makeshift centre-half pairing of Joel Matip and Fabinho kept a clean sheet — no mean feat against Bayern Munich — they missed the Dutchman's forward thinking

Positivity from the centre backs is crucial to the way Jurgen Klopp's team play. Van Dijk and Joe Gomez — Liverpool's first-choice pairing — are usually effortless in possession

They are always looking to play forwards to give the platform to build their attacks

That was not always the case on Tuesday night. Matip, in particular, panicked in possession

His most frequent pass in the first half was back to Alisson, finding his goalkeeper eight times

It prevented Liverpool from getting on the front foot and striking an early blow

Share this article Share Bayern may not be the force they once were but they still carry the aura of champions

They were able to grow in confidence throughout the match and their forwards quickly started to anticipate that Matip would keep going backwards

When I was playing in defence for Arsenal nothing made Arsene Wenger more angry than when we passed back to David Seaman

Go forward and the opposition are deterred from pressing your goalkeeper. Go back and you only invite them on

It was understandable that Matip should be nervous on such a huge occasion but sometimes, the biggest mistake you can make is to be afraid to make one

Alisson saw plenty of the ball in those early stages but the time he dwelt on it was criminal

That put his team-mates under pressure, too.Van Dijk will return for next month's second leg in Munich

Liverpool will need his attacking impetus as much as his Rolls-Royce defending.  Share this article Share

Man Utd news: Mauricio Pochettino 'could have agreed' to take charge - Brazil - Duration: 2:48.

That's according to ex-United defender Derek Brazil, who reckons the Tottenham boss' appointment might already be a done deal

Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the nod after Jose Mourinho was axed in December

Solskjaer was expected to return to Molde at the end of the season but has performed better than expected

United have been on a stunning run of form domestically. However, they slumped to a 2- defeat against Ligue 1 giants PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday

Brazil says the result proved Solskjaer still has plenty to prove. He also reckons Woodward might have already held talks with Pochettino over taking the reins

"If anything it shows how far we are behind teams in Europe," he told Love Radio

"PSG have been building this team for two or three years to win the Champions League

"You take the two players out last night but I think the two midfielders for them last night were outstanding

They were top class. "In terms of the manager situation with Solskjaer, it would have been a mistake, even before last night, to say 'here's the job'

"If they say to him 'you can have the job', players may take their foot off the pedal

"Like I said on one of your other shows, when Mourinho was fired and there was speculation over who will come in to replace him, and Solskjaer was appointed until the end of the season, nobody knows whether they have already done a deal with Pochettino

"He may have been asked straight away whether he wants the job, and he could have agreed to join at the end of the season

"That would put United in a difficult situation." United face Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday

Solskjaer says his side will not panic despite their underwhelming Champions League performance

"We still want to impose ourselves on games," said Solskjaer. "You don't panic because you have lost a game - it doesn't change the mindset

"We need to keep working on the way we want to play."

Liverpool News - Klopp admits Liverpool have it all to do in Germany after stalemate - Duration: 4:20.

Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool only had themselves to blame after their Champions League hopes were left hanging in the balance

Bayern Munich played with the composure of a team who have reached the Champions League semi-finals eight times in the last decade and they summoned an excellent defensive performance to secure a 0-0 draw

But Klopp believes the result would have been different had his side's passing been sharper, particularly during the first half when Sadio Mane missed the game's best chance and fired wide with only Manuel Neuer to beat

Defender Joel Matip reacts with anguish after slicing a second half effort over the bar The Germans will be favourites to progress to the last eight but Klopp was not too disheartened with the scoreline and is confident his team have enough to get through, provided they recapture their sharpness in the Allianz Arena on March 13

'Our problem was that our last pass was not our friend,' said Klopp. 'There were 10 or 12 passes where it was on a plate

How it is in situation like this is that I'm sure Bayern will feel better but day by day it will feel better for us and worse for Bayern

'If we had won 1-0 what would have changed? Nothing. It's not perfect but good enough to work with

It is the best draw (not conceding an away goal). A 0-0 would have been enough for us

So it is not perfect but good enough.' Sadio Mane missed one of the clearest chances to score in the first half, screwing a shot wide Liverpool have lost every game they have played away from home in Europe since last April – the semi-final in Rome, the final in Kiev then three group games – and before they go to Germany they have a sequence of demanding Premier League assignments

'It is not the result or the game we dreamed about and nobody will remember this game in 20 years,' said Klopp, who will at least have Virgil van Dijk back from suspension

'In Germany, we say it is like the Homburger Shooting, a big ballyhoo before the game and then not much happens

'It was an intense one, you saw the respect both teams have for each other. I didn't see when we watched Munich before, like the full backs stayed in their half and Gnabry defended on the wing so there was a lot of respect

Salah missed a few good openings, heading one chance wide of the goal at the far post'But we had chances, in the first half with Sadio, if he strikes the ball better, with the overhead kick

A goal would have changed things.'Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac is similarly cautious about the return fixture and said: 'It is half full, half empty, I can't remember that many clubs have not lost and not conceded at Anfield and the way Liverpool played, they are a sensationally good team

'My team in defence and as a whole kept everything tight at the back and played at a high level, tactically and mentally

We didn't score but we didn't let one in. 'We are at home now, we will play in front of 75,000

We know if we concede, we have to win. We will see.'  Alisson was almost caught out in defence on a number of occasions as Liverpool looked nervy

Liverpool news: Rio Ferdinand singles out one player in his criticism vs Bayern Munich - Duration: 2:40.

Ferdinand was working as a pundit for the Champions League last-16 first leg match at Anfield

The game was goalless at half time but both sides had chances to open the scoring

Bayern Munich started the better side and caused some nervy moments in the Liverpool defence

Ferdinand says Bayern surprised the hosts by preventing them from playing out from the back

And he laid blame at Reds goalkeeper Alisson for a number of hairy moments in the opening 45

"I think they took the game away from Liverpool at the beginning," Ferdinand said on BT Sport

"Liverpool normally come out of the blocks fast. "They would have said in the changing room 'let's start this game fast, let's get amongst this Bayern Munich team' - they weren't allowed to

"Neuer was dictating things from the back and at times when they had the ball themselves Liverpool, they played themselves into problems

"Alisson has been very lax with the ball, giving up possession very easily and putting his team under pressure at times

"This has been a very different performance and intensity from Liverpool that we normally see because Bayern Munich have dictated that

"I have to say they have defended well, the professionalism, the experience they've used, keeping the full-backs in, the manager's played a masterclass in that

"In the games we've seen previously, these Bayern full-backs normally play high up the pitch

"They know where they are, they're at Anfield, they know that space and speed will kill them here

" The game remained goalless meaning Bayern failed to score an away goal to take back to the Allianz Arena

Bayern's Joshua Kimmich will miss the second leg through suspension.

Liverpool News - Jim Beglin BLASTED for Liverpool vs Bayern Munich commentary on BT Sport: Fans not - Duration: 2:42.

The former Liverpool man, who used to commentate for ITV when he Champions League was broadcast by them, isn't putting himself in the good graces of Reds fans tonight

Liverpool were up against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League tonight but the game finished -

But Beglin seemed to be talk of the town on Twitter, as fans began to pick up on small mistakes the Irishman kept making

Naturally, fans couldn't keep their thoughts to themselves… One wrote: "Someone needs to tell Jim Beglin that Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané aren't the same person

" Another said: "Jim Beglin needs to bore off." Another agreed: "Don't bother turning over

It's worse on bt. Jim Beglin." One tweet read: "Jim Beglin's co-commentary on BT is dreadful

#Liverpoolbayern." Another fan harshly said: "Jim Beglin is horrendous. Don't know what game he reckons he's watching

My god." One even commented that Beglin was worse than Steve McManaman, tweeting: "Nope Jim Beglin is even worse

Bring back Steve." Another took a more sarcastic tone, tweeting: "Jim Beglin is great at repeating back to you what you've just seen

" And finally, went simply went with: "Nobody could ever accuse Jim Beglin of #lfc bias

" The game produced very little action as Liverpool failed to score at home for the first time in this year's Champions League

They now have to go to Germany and score in a few weeks time when they two sides meet again for the second leg

Jurgen Klopp is an old foe of Bayern Munich's, having beaten them to two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund

Referee announced for Chelsea vs Spurs - and it's bad news for Blues fans - Duration: 3:26.

The referee has been announced for Chelsea's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur later this month

And, it is bad news for an already under pressure Maurizio Sarri as he aims to beat Mauricio Pochettino's side for a second time this season and bolster the Blues' hopes of finishing in the top four this season

The west London are in Carabao Cup final action on Sunday against holders Manchester City, meaning their two rivals for a Champions League spot can take full advantage that same afternoon

Fourth-placed Manchester United host bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, while Arsenal are at home to relegation threatened Southampton and depending on how results go, Chelsea could find themselves with some ground to make up ahead of their London derby

However, news of the referee appointment is hardly likely to be greeted with cheers amongst supporters

Andre Marriner will take charge of the clash at Stamford Bridge and despite the fact that the Blues have fared well when he's been the man in the middle down the years, there's one game that will bring back bad memories

He was the official when the Blues lost the corresponding fixture against the Lilywhites last season as a wonder-strike from Christian Eriksen and a brace from Dele Alli was enough to cancel out Alvaro Morata's early goal

That 3-1 success was Spurs' first win at the Bridge in almost three decades and a result which proved to be pivotal in the top four race

Furthermore, Marriner was the fourth official when Sarri's side crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United on Monday night and the Italian will be hopeful this isn't another bad omen

It should be noted that prior to the game against Spurs - and ever since - Marriner's record when officiating Chelsea matches has been fairly good with him overseeing a 3-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday and a 1-1 draw with Liverpool this season

In total the official from Birmingham has refereed 43 Chelsea games across all competitions since his first over a decade years ago and that's yielded 24 wins and 10 losses for the club

Scott Ledger and Simon Long are the assistant referees, with Mike Dean on fourth official duty in west London

Chelsea news: Cesar Azpilicueta admits season rests on next NINE days after Man Utd loss - Duration: 2:51.

Chelsea were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United on Monday evening thanks to goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba

The Blues were pretty dismal as their woes continued and further pressure was heaped onto manager Maurizio Sarri

They now have to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final before playing Tottenham in the Premier League the week after

Chelsea have already suffered at the hands of City this year, losing 6-0 at the Etihad just under two weeks ago

And Azpilicueta, who has won the FA Cup with Chelsea, believes the season rests on the next nine days

"Hopefully we can have a good nine days. It's the whole season," he told Chelsea TV

"We know that a trophy in the middle is everything, to bring the fans back to Wembley with the spirit to get the Cup

"We will be back at the Bridge against Malmo to finish the job we started last Thursday, to get through to the next round

" READ MORE: WHO DOES GARETH BALE WANT TO MOVE TO?   Against Manchester United on Monday, Chelsea looked devoid of ideas and were punished when the Red Devils pushed forward

Two free has for Herrera and Pogba were enough too heap further misery onto Chelsea's defenders

Azpilicueta doesn't think his side pushed hard enough to even cause United problems

"We didn't put Manchester in difficulties even at 2-0 down," he said. "We were not very good in the final metres, so we paid for that

"And at the end we couldn't score." Come Sunday evening, Chelsea could have just the Premier League to play for, if they are defeated by Malmo and Manchester City

A Malmo loss, however, seems unlikely, with the west London side already 2-1 up from the first leg

✅ Breaking News - Ben Youngs backs Jonny May to continue deadly form for England - Duration: 5:07.

Jonny May is viewed by England team-mate Ben Youngs as the deadliest wing in the world who shows flashes of Forrest Gump

The Leicester duo are plotting the downfall of Wales in Saturday's seismic Guinness Six Nations title clash with May's speed and finishing instincts sure to be central in Eddie Jones' gameplan

The 28-year-old has plundered 12 tries in as many Tests including a devastating hat-trick against France in round two to emerge as a superstar of the game

Share this article Share 'Jonny's been phenomenal the last 12 months, if not longer,' Youngs said of his Leicester colleague

'He's certainly the in-form winger in the world and perhaps the best winger in the world at the moment

'The threat Jonny poses is out-and-out pace and that's incredibly hard to deal with

You're not going to win a foot race against him.'When someone is as quick as him you know that when the ball is put in behind you, he's going to be there

'He suddenly appears, a bit like Forrest Gump on that kick return in the movie where he gets given the ball and he just goes!'By his own admission, May is 'a bit different to most of the others' in a team now rated as favourites to relieve Ireland of their Six Nations crown

England scrum-half Danny Care recently claimed that he 'used to think he was possessed by a chicken!'Care added: 'He used to go around clucking and thought this chicken demon was inside him

I don't know whether it was an act or true - with Jonny you just never know!'For all the entertainment provided by England's sharpest attacking weapon, May insists the blistering form that began during the 2018 summer tour to South Africa is the product of years of toil on the practise field

'Do you think I was possessed by a chicken? It's a bit silly isn't it? I don't think at any stage that has happened,' he said

'What's been a little bit funny to me is that everyone's now saying 'wow' whereas I feel it hasn't happened overnight

'I feel like I've been working hard over a long period of time. You've got to stick at it and keep working hard

'People might suddenly start taking notice but that's not going to make me think anything different other than 'I want to keep doing what I'm doing'

'I am a much different player to what I was and I am proud of where I am and where I have come from when you think about my first 10 games

'I have scored a lot in my last 12 - more than in my first 30 - is that luck or a coincidence? Maybe it is, but I know my game is better now and the tries come with that

'May is aware that his profile has rocketed, but takes a level-headed approach to the mass of plaudits that have descended upon him

'I try to avoid it as much as I can, that is my first strategy, but it's hard,' May said

'Without knowing, your sister sends you a silly interview of something. Or you pick up a paper or flick on your Instagram

It is hard to escape it all.'Although it's nice, it's irrelevant. I am not the sort of guy to get distracted by that, or think I've made it

'Whether it is good or bad you have got to stick to your plan and keeping working hard

That is what I have been doing.'England have confirmed that Maro Itoje will miss the game because of knee ligament damage

Itoje sustained the injury in the opening weekend victory over Ireland and missed the rout of France a week later amid a prognosis that the Saracens lock would return for the later rounds of the Championship

Forwards coach Steve Borthwick said: 'Maro is continuing his rehabilitation on a daily basis

He will not be available for Saturday's game. He's going well, just not quite well enough for this weekend

'Joe Cokanasiga has moved a step closer to securing a role at the Principality Stadium after being retained in a 25-man squad that will step up preparations for the Wales appointment

Cokanasiga made a try-scoring comeback for Bath on Saturday after two months out with a knee injury and his power out wide could secure him a place on the bench

News24 - Man Utd transfer news: What Louis van Gaal did to burn relationship with Angel Di Maria - Duration: 3:18.

Manchester United were haunted by PSG star Di Maria last week, with the Argentina international impressing in a 2-0 Champions League win at Old Trafford

The 31-year-old signed for the Red Devils in 2014 with Van Gaal forking out £60million to make Di Maria the most-expensive player in English football at the time

Things at Manchester United started well for the Argentine, with a fine solo goal against Leicester standing out in the memory

Ultimately, though, the forward failed to live up to expectations. And few tears were shed when Van Gaal sold him to PSG in 2015, just a year on from his arrival

Di Maria has now opened up about their feud. And the PSG star has insisted Van Gaal was always criticising him for losing the ball during his time at United

"At Manchester [United], the first two months went well," he told Sports France. "Then there is a fight and after a big fight, the relationship is not the same anymore and it's the coach who decides if you play or not

"There are times when I lost the ball easily and these are the things he showed me

Trending  "He always showed me the negative and it started to weigh me down, until one day I argued with him

" "I told him that I did not want to see that anymore, that I was doing good things, and I asked him why he was not showing them to me

"He did not like the way I told him and the problems started from there." Di Maria was popular when he signed for United

But unforgiving fans subjected him to boos and taunts when he returned with PSG seven days ago

The forward was also sent flying by United skipper Ashley Young, who barged him onto the metal railings around the pitch

But, speaking after that game, Di Maria insisted he was not fazed by the reaction of the United crowd

"It was difficult from the opening minute," the former Real Madrid star added. "But I knew this was going to happen

"But I've said it in the past and I reiterate it, I never spoke badly of the people here and of this club

"These are things that happen and people took it badly. I only had problems with the coach [Louis van Gaal] here

"
