Two nations born of the same soil, speaking the same languages, sharing a common border
– yet miles and miles away from peace.
So, why can't India and Pakistan sort out their differences?
There's a number of reasons, but here's a few that never go away.
For starters, there's the issue of terrorism.
Both countries accuse each other of fomenting terrorism in each other's lands.
Here's a few recent examples.

But India isn't the only one accusing Pakistan of supporting terrorism.
Last year, this tweet from Donald Trump caused a diplomatic firestorm between the United
States and Pakistan.
Besides terrorism, there is the ever present issue of Kashmir.
The area within the blue lines is Jammu and Kashmir.
India claims it in its entirety.
It bases its claims on an Instrument of Accession that the Hindu ruler of the princely state
of Jammu and Kashmir signed in 1947.
That made the territory a part of India.
But Pakistan has always disputed this.
War followed and since 1948 this is how the territory looks like.
The part in light orange that you see here is the part that's controlled by India and
the part in the north-west in the darker orange is the part under Pakistani control.
Both areas are divided by this grey line that you see over here, that since 1972 has come
to be called the Line of Control.
Its the heavily militarized de-facto border between India and Pakistan that repeatedly
sees both sides exchange fire.
Protests against Indian forces in the part controlled by India are a regular occurance
in Kashmir.
Since 1989, that has morphed into a full-blown militancy against Indian rule.
Apart from the continuing militancy, both countries have also gone to war four times
since independence in 1947.
Of these; thrice, 1947, 1965 and 1999 were over Kashmir.
Some analysts say improved people-to-people contacts are the way forward.
But that has always proved notoriously hard to do.
Getting visas to travel to both countries continues to be difficult.
That has a direct impact on the transport connections between both countries.
So, what hope is there of peace?
Here's what the mood is currently on both sides of
the border.

Roma is the new movie by Alfonso Cuaron,
in which he narrates the life of Cleo as a domestic worker, for an upper middle class family in Mexico City during the 70s.
In a very personal production from the Mexican Director, the contrast between social classes is explicitly exposed,
which has started an important conversation, since it is still a current reality in Mexico.
This is therefore an exceptional job that radically questions us as the audience,
and at the same time, leaves us with the responsibility of interpreting it.
The movie's aesthetics perfectly display the way in which the exploitation and the violence in domestic work have been normalized in Mexico.
That is to say, social criticism is present in the film,
however, those who are looking for explicit and revolutionary references, won't find them,
and those who only see an affectionate dimension in the relationship of subordination between master and worker are in a bubble of privilege.
Even though there is a sincere affectionate relationship, we keep seeing the real disconnection between the two parties,
what is artificial and what is hierarchic in that affection.
Sure enough, there are people who conceive this type of relationship as something normal, these people end up being exposed.
Cleo lives in a house that isn't hers, and receives commands from a family, which isn't her family either;
she lives to serve them, regardless of her servitude being in the frame of an endearing relationship.
It is a virtue of the film that certain people won't see an element of domination in subtleties like "I love you, go get me an ice cream" -
the exploitation disguised by kindness shows that Roma isn't something from the past, even though some people believe so.
The story of the main character is determined by the heritage of colonization,
that still divides Mexican society through language, culture and social class, which paradoxically unites us in an inescapable way.
Cleo is one of those millions of women that suffer an intersectional discrimination,
the one that comes from social relations, history and operation of power dynamics.
Her vulnerability comes from her feminine condition, which is what places her in a structural subordination. On top of that, there's her poverty and her race.
Between the lines, we find that the combination of inequities, discrimination, poverty and ignorance when it comes to sexual and reproductive health services is pivotal,
and an ongoing reality in our country.
What Cleo lives, is part of a systemic infringement of rights that women in her circumstances experience,
not having the social, financial or political power to make decisions for their lives, their bodies and their sexuality.
Hence, we have a movie that makes us debate, and forces us to pick our stance and define ourselves in the face of this reality,
and that is one of its great accomplishments.
People have opinions, and that's where we find out who they really are beyond the façade that a politically correct speech can have.
In this sense, the film tells a story in a beautiful way, but leaves us the responsibility of interpreting it.
These are the different aspects of life, and political-ideological analysis - the social aspect, gender, racism and political matters is offered, but not imposed on the viewer.
We must say, however, that whoever understood the movie as redeeming of ideologies, somehow pleasant, or an endearing love story, didn't pay attention to the violences that are repeatedly portrayed.

The opposition wants electoral reform and justice for those who died during a brutal government crackdown last year.
Nicaraguan Presidentáhas said he would resume dialogue with opposition leaders who are calling for early elections, after nearly a year grappling with one of the countrys worst crises since a civil war four decades ago.
Ortega said on Thursday that the government is working to "set the table for negotiations next Wednesday" with representatives from the opposition, which is demanding his resignation.
An attempt at dialogue over welfare benefits last May erupted into protests that lasted for months, fading only under a áthat left at least 320 people dead.
Ortega made the announcement during an event commemorating the 85th anniversary of the death of guerrilla leader Augusto Sandino, to an audience of cabinet members, military personnel, the police and supporters.
It comes as the government faces an economic crisis and a dollar 315m deficit, as it struggles without funding and loans that would usually come in from multilateral organisations.
Protests initially started last April over now ditched pension reform, and escalated quickly as they were met by a brutal government crackdown.
"Nicaragua is experiencing one of the worst human rights crisis in its recent history," Erika Guevara Rosas, the Americas director atáAmnesty International, Al Jazeera.

"We are likely to see an early start to the birch pollen season, which affects around 25 per cent of hay fever sufferers in the spring," hay fever expert and pollen forecaster, Dr Beverley Adams-Groom told The Sun
"The season usually starts in early April but could start in mid-to-late March this year
"The grass pollen season (usually starting in late May/early June) could be on the early side too but it's too soon to say because it's the weather in late March and April that mainly affects it
" Hay fever season as a whole tends to run between late March and September, and it's at its worst usually around June, when it's warm, humid and windy
But seeing as this month, we've seen record-breaking temperatures in Scotland of 18
2'C - the average temperature of late May/early June - it's not surprising that hay fever issues might be starting earlier this year
For grass pollen to really become strong, you need warm and rather wet weather, so it depends on whether we get any April showers or not
But for those who suffer from birch pollen sensitivities, you may start struggling sooner rather than later
Hay fever is a problem for around 80 per cent of people with asthma, with many not knowing that trees start releasing their pollen at this time of the year
"It isn't spring yet, but trees such as alder and hazel releasing pollen could wreak havoc on people with asthma who are allergic to it," Sonia Munde, Head of Services at Asthma UK, told The Sun
"A pollen allergy can cause winter hay fever, triggering asthma symptoms such as wheezing or a tight chest that could develop into a full-blown asthma attack

El sismo de 7,5 ocurrió a las 05:17 hora local (10:17 GMT), a una profundidad de 107,27 kilómetros y a 122,85 kilómetros de la ciudad de Macas, en el oeste de Ecuador
Ese movimiento se produjo a una latitud de 2.51 grados y a una longitud de 77 grados
Tres minutos después ocurrió otro sismo, de 6 grados en la escala abierta de Richter, en la misma provincia, de acuerdo al Instituto, a una profundidad de 143 kilómetros, a 65,2 kilómetros de Macas, a una latitud de 2,35 grados y una longitud de 77,5 grados
Los sismos ocurridos en Morona Santiago, en el este del país, se sintieron en gran parte del país, incluida la capital ecuatoriana, Quito, según los vecinos
El Servicio Integrado de Seguridad (ECU 911) informó de que hubo evacuaciones en las provincias de Loja y Zamora Chinchipe y que equipos de respuesta realizan al momento inspecciones de estructuras o alertas
Población de algunas ciudades salieron a las calles por los sismos, sobre los cuales aún no hay reportes sobre víctimas o algún daño material

Ela recebeu R$ 200 mil da direção nacional do PSL, valor proveniente do fundo partidário, dinheiro público para financiar as legendas e as campanhas eleitorais
Parte desse montante foi parar nas contas de familiares. Questionada sobre o motivo dos pagamentos à filha e à neta, a candidata respondeu, sem detalhar: "Quem sabe elas trabalharam?"
"Não entrei para ganhar o Senado, mas para dar 28 segundos [na TV] para o Bolsonaro
Ele não tinha horário político, eu não tinha intenção de me eleger, em nenhum momento", disse
A filha, Maribel Lopes, por exemplo, recebeu R$ 40 mil pelo aluguel de seis meses de um imóvel com o mesmo endereço da loja de móveis da mãe, em Porto Alegre
Ao lado, funcionou a sede do PSL durante a campanha, local agora vazio

A Justiça Eleitoral pode entender como ilegal se, ao julgar as contas, constatar que os serviços não foram prestados, por exemplo, como gráficas de fachada
Carmen recebeu R$ 200 mil do diretório nacional do PSL para a candidatura, mas diz que "trabalhou para Bolsonaro"

As notas fiscais mostram que os móveis não teriam saído da loja vizinha da sede, mas de uma loja da rede "Carmen Flores" em Xangri-lá, no litoral gaúcho
Questionado sobre o uso do fundo partidário para comprar bens para o PSL, disse que considerava "tudo legal"
O que seria incorreto, segundo ele, seria a compra na loja da então presidente do partido, "sem licitação"
A prestação de contas da candidata ao Senado também mostra que a maior despesa da campanha foi para Roselvane Nascimento, que recebeu R$ 95,1 mil
Segundo Nunes, Roselvane trabalhava como secretária do PSL. A reportagem tentou contato por telefone, mas foi informada de que ela estava em viagem
Ameaça Segundo o deputado Nunes, em setembro passado, ele informou a Gustavo Bebianno, que presidia o PSL nacional, sobre o modo como Carmen conduzia o partido gaúcho
"Eu não era candidato ainda. Quando relatei os problemas, ele disse que se eu continuasse contra a Carmen poderia ficar sem legenda para concorrer
Me ameaçou", disse à reportagem. Procurado, o PSL nacional não se manifestou sobre a suposta denúncia de irregularidades feita por Nunes

"Ele nasceu com a mecânica. Ele começou na loja do pai vendendo peças mecânicas, o pai dele tinha uma loja de autopeças

O senador da Rede relatou ainda que seu time de futebol, o Matapi, acabou ficando sem zagueiro depois que Alcolumbre foi eleito presidente do Senado
