US NEWS | FBI and Pembroke Pines FL p0lice find tunnel leading to bank Bradenton Herald

In what sounds like the plot from a bank heist movie, Pembroke Pines police said Wednesday that they found a tunnel that leads to a Chase bank at the Flamingo Pines shopping center.

The hole doesnt appear to be a garden variety sinkhole, but rather the work of someone who may have been burrowing a tunnel to get into the bank.

What police and the FBI found at the hole at Flamingo Road and Pines Boulevard was unique, said Miami FBI spokesman Michael Leverock.

At the tunnel site, the FBI found a generator, a wench and a wagon above ground near the woods line, which indicates they someone was using some sort of rope in the tunnel — hence, the wench to pull the rope, Leverock explained. A wooden palette covered the tunnels entrance.

Crews used heavy equipment to tear up a two lane road that leads to the shopping plaza after Pembroke Pines Public Works was called out Tuesday night after someone called in a pothole.

After public works saw in the hole an orange extension cord — the simple kind you might pick up at a grocery or hardware store — they alerted Pembroke Pines police who, in turn, called out the FBI because of the holes proximity to the Chase bank.

Ive only seen something like this in the movies — and Im not even sure Ive seen this because its so small, Leverock said.

Leverock said the tunnel was two to three feet in diameter and about 50 yards in length.

You would have to be really small to get in there and it would be very claustrophobic, Leverock said. Theres no way anybody could sit up in there, thats how small it was.

But whoever dug through the wooded area to get to the bank took some time. They could have been doing this for a month. This was not an overnight thing, Leverock said.

The FBI tapped the Palm Beach County Sherrifs Offices K9 unit to send a dog into portions of the tunnel to make sure no one was inside and no one was found..

The bank was not breached and no money was stolen, the FBI said.

The FBIs investigation is ongoing and expected to last into the evening. Chase has not yet released a statement.

On the U.S. Mexico border, a large fence has done little to deter enterprising drug smugglers. In Nogales, Arizona, theyve been digging out tunnels for years in order to cross the border undetected.

 talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino reckons that Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson should win an award for his consistent form this season

 He says that the £50,000-a-week [Spotrac] star has been in his 'team of the week' too many times too count, and adds that although his teammate Virgil Van Dijk does get a lot of compliments, Robertson's form should be rewarded if the Reds end up lifting the Premier League title

 Cascarino says that left-backs do not usually get themselves in the running for major awards, but he has made the exception for the Scotland international

 "I thought it was significant that the first audible chant of the night from the Liverpool fans was in support of Andy Robertson," he said in his Times column

 "Left backs will rarely get anywhere near contention for the two big player of the year awards but, when I looked back over my teams of the week for The Times this season I noticed Robertson had appeared more than any other player

 "Virgil van Dijk, his fellow Liverpool defender, has received plenty of praise but, if Liverpool win the league and Robertson maintains his form until the end of the season, then he must be in with a chance of receiving one of the two main individual honours

I would give it to him."  OPINION  Robertson is arguably one of the most underrated players in both the Liverpool side and the Premier League, and it is safe to say that he is not praised enough for his efforts

Cascarino is right though – he does deserve a major award if his consistent form helps the Reds win the league this season

Like he said, left-backs are not usually in the running for awards, mainly because there have not been many left-backs of the same quality as Robertson

It is hard to pick out a mistake he has made this season – perhaps the draw against Leicester on Wednesday is the exception – and that is rare for most players these days

The only time he has been replaced this term is when he was injured for a short while, but other than that, no other left-backs at the club are going to get a look-in at the moment
