Mexcaltitan es a tiny remote village, about 6 miles from the sea
close to the mouth of the powerful San Pedro river, in Nayarit, [Mexico]
Aproximately one hour from its capital, Tepic
Mexcaltitan is one of the most unique towns I've visited
for it's combination of nature and tradition
and the flavor and essence of Mexico that can be felt stronger in its ancient
towns like this one. Its main beauty is in it's location:
it was built on an island in the middle of a lagoon
surrounded by the vast mangroves that form where the salt water of the Pacific Ocean
with the abundant fresh water from this and other rivers.
Walking through the streets, there is a sense of disappearing though time
Life flows slower here.
The town has a school sports venues and a church
its inhabitants live from fishing and from tourism
Some historians think that maybe this forgotten town
could be the Aztlán of legend where the Aztec culture was born
that after a long trek, built a city on an island at the center
of another lake: Tenochtitlan, now Mexico city
On its shores there are several restaurants facing the lagoon
and on a nearby island a slightly larger restaurant
that targets families wanting to spend a relaxing weekend afternoon with family
Like in all the places where I fly my drone, I was swarmed with a lot of local kids asking questions
You can see, that even though their town is remote that they are quite smart and have sharp intellects
I hope they can reach their dreams, and perhaps exceed them
becoming pilots, scientists
or who knows? Mexican astronauts. I hope you can one day go there
but until then: keep flying high!
