Arsenal completed their first January signing on the final day of the window, with Denis Suarez arriving on loan from Barcelona
They have been linked with moves for the likes of Ivan Perisic and Yannick Carrasco, though those deals appear to be dead
But Nicholas is furious the defence has not been improved by the new-look transfer committee at the club
And he pointed to the impact centre-back Virgil van Dijk has had at Liverpool since his mega move 12 months ago
"I'm happy with anybody at the moment if I'm being honest," Nicholas said of the Suarez deal on Sky Sports
"This Arsenal transfer policy is an absolute joke, it really is a joke ever since David Dein left the building
"I'm confused because we all [know] we need defenders, they're hard to get. "Liverpool spent £60m-70m getting one of the best you can get
"After 22 years of Arsene Wenger, he actually left because we couldn't defend, that's why he left
"Now this new guy [Unai Emery] comes in, ninth richest [club] I think, we were sixth richest I think last year, and we can only get loan deals
"I don't care whether this manager likes this player or not. Please Arsenal, get some defenders in
"We've got a new bunch of guys on the committee that sit there and they pat themselves on the back for bringing us [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang
"I'm sorry but we all knew he was a fabulous footballer but he's another attacker
We all know these are good players. "Have you got the ability to look at [Shkodran] Mustafi, who's not good enough for the price that you're buying? We've done it too often
"Find quality defenders, bring them in, and then I think the fans will give you the proper judgement
