My name is Brenda Herrera
And I'm the community outreach specialist at camera and health the Bravo does the salute program is a volunteer program that fosters?
Community service in Madera and also fosters the improvement of life in Madera so we focus on nutrition education
physical activity education and diabetes self-management education
Today, we are celebrating the graduation of our Promotores De Salud program.
We have two levels we have level one that is graduating with nutrition education our level two is graduating from diabetes and self-management education,
and we're also celebrating our third year Promotores.
We have Promotores that have served as volunteers for three years and have already completed these two training.
So what we did today is we invite their family members to come in and we want them to know
what it is that they're doing in all these hours that they leave their families.
So, we want to highlight them we want to let them know that we appreciate their work.
We appreciate all the time and effort that they put into Camarena into our community
It was on July of 2016, I got a flyer and then I got really interested on what actually was in the flyer.
I went ahead and I went to the orientation and then that's how I actually got involved and this program.
I was reading the Madera newspaper and I saw an ad that really grabbed my attention.
It was from Camarena Health. The ad was inviting community members to participate and volunteer in the Promotores De Salude program.
I think the Health Education you know because there's a lot of
things out there that say, "this is the right portion" or "this is the right thing"
I really wanted to know what was the real...what was the real you know?
thing out there. So this was a really good program that was going to give me the right answers that I was looking for
I've been too some of the schools and then
also at First Five we did one and I liked it because
I learned how to prepare healthier foods or my family.
and then being able to help other parents and kids also.
Recently, we had interventions with people that have diabetes
and the impact that I think that I had on the community
is that, the people looked interested in the things we were showing them
and they reached out to us to ask us for more information
they told us afterwards that the things they learned helped them
help people with diabetes, improve their lifestyle and eating habits.
People can get involved with the program, it's really easy.
They can just call. They do have to go through an orientation first, and we do have a volunteers commit for a whole year
So if you are going to participate in the program, it's for a whole year
At first six months, it's just training to learn about all these topics
I mentioned and then the other six months is about doing the fieldwork, so you'll go out into the community
You'll be able to do information tables
You'll be able to work with people in homes
And then you can also work with other agencies first step is to give us a call
They call our outreach department and say hey, you know we hear you have a volunteer program
we want to get involved so we will bring them in and
show them you know we do we do want them to sign up for a year so that they get the whole experience
But as long as they let us know that they want to participate we invite them come in
you know join one of our afternoon meetings get to know the ladies, and hopefully it's something that they want to see with
