I have said since Donald Trump got into
the campaign that he has every right to
hit back at the media that he believes
covers him unfairly I have said after
each controversial story and each attack
that while the president's language is
occasionally too harsh
the relentlessly negative coverage is
fair game for his counterpunching
approach but the president crossed a
line yesterday that he should not have
crossed in calling for the heads of two
major networks to be fired I knew when I
said that on Fox that I would be
strongly criticized by some Trump
supporters but I have to be consistent a
President of the United States using his
bully pulpit to demand the firing of
corporate executives simply because he
doesn't like their media coverage of him
is unprecedented and troubling and if
President Obama had urged Fox News to
fire Roger Ailes there would have been
an explosion on the right at the same
time CNN in particular has given him a
big target with a flawed story that it
refuses to clarify our correct the story
said Michael Cohen is ready to tell
prosecutors that the president knew in
advance of the Trump Tower meeting with
a Russian lawyer Cohen's attorney Lanny
Davis who tells me he did not confirm
the allegation when he spoke to CNN
off-the-record calls the account false
Trump has a special resentment towards
Ucker because they worked together
during his apprentice days when Zucker
ran NBC the president took to Twitter to
accuse CNN of hatred and extreme bias
against him and then slammed CNN
president Jeff Zucker by addressing the
network's new parent company little Jeff
Z has done a terrible job his ratings
suck and AT&T should fire him to save
credibility that was after CNN hit back
at an earlier Trump slam saying make no
mistake mr. president
CNN does not lie we report the news and
we report
people in power tell lies CNN stands by
our reporting and our reporters one of
those reporters on the hotly disputed
Michael Cohen story is Jim Chiodo a
political appointee in the Obama
administration
another is Carl Bernstein the one-time
Watergate sleuth who has continually
hammered Trump as a CNN commentator
Bernstein has called Trump an
authoritarian said his tenure is worse
than Watergate and that this is the
greatest journalistic challenge of the
modern era to report on a malignant
presidency and no Carl and I respect him
but those are not the words of an
unbiased reporter when it comes to Trump
during the Tweed storm Trump called
Bernstein's sloppy and a man who lives
in the past and thinks like a degenerate
fool making up story after story
Bernstein responded that I have spent my
life as a journalist bringing the truth
to light through administration's of
both parties no taunt will diminish my
commitment to that mission the president
also went hard after Andy lack the NBC
News chairman the good news is that Andy
lack Y is about to be fired for
incompetence and much worse he tweeted
that is purely an unsubstantiated rumor
NBC has made no comment and then there
was this about NBC when Lester Holt got
caught fudging my tape on Russia they
were hurt badly there is no credible
allegation that the NBC anger engaged in
misleading editing of his interview with
Trump last year that was two days after
the firing of Jim Comey when Trump
stunned the world by saying he can the
FBI directly regardless of a
recommendation and brought up the
Russian investigation NBC posted the
entire 13 minute interview on line
president from did something yesterday
in terms of his attacks on the media
that crossed a line now I knew when I
said that on the air on Fox News and I
would get blistered by some Trump
supporters and that's exactly what
happened but let me back up so I can
explain what I mean
and provide the full context I mean if
you've been following the news at all
recent days you know this has to do with
the CNN report which I am calling a very
flawed and mishandled report both in
terms of the original reporting and the
aftermath claiming that Michael Kohn had
advanced says the President of the
United States had advanced knowledge of
the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a
Russian lawyer and now of course Lanny
Davis who told me that he had talked to
CNN off the record had never confirmed
this story says the story's false and
CNN's standing by the story saying very
little about this not really examining
it or explaining itself on the air
certainly because it's saying well we
have other sources who say Michael Kohn
still believes this when Cohen's own
lawyer Lanny Davis says it's not true
the cone doesn't know that Cohn hasn't
said that Cohn didn't tell it to Capitol
Hill
so naturally president not in a good
mood towards CNN and he has been hitting
back and citing what Lanny Davis said
and so on but yesterday in the course of
beating up on CNN and we've all seen him
do that at rallies and so forth he had
this to say about Jeff Zucker and as you
may know there's something personal
between Donald Trump and Jeff Zucker
because they used to work together at
NBC huckle was running NBC Trump had the
freshest air so Kerr green lighted the
show they had a friendly relationship
and now Trump is even more resentful
about what he sees as CNN's were
relentlessly unfair coverage of him in
his view and there are times when the
coverage has been unfair and I have said
that so president Sweeting yesterday
that the hatred and extreme bias of me
by CNN has clouded their thinking and
made them unable to function okay
that's his opinion then he goes on to do
this and he's kind of addressing CNN's
new parent company after the takeover of
Time Warner little Jeff Z has done a
terrible job his ratings suck and AT&T
should fire him to save credibility so
here you have the President of the
United States calling for the head of a
company to be fired because he doesn't
like the media coverage of that company
and I think
that is using the bully pulpit in a way
that goes too far is too personal and
mean we just take a step back I mean can
you ever think of the president United
States any previous president calling
for the head of a company let alone a
media company to be fired I think that
that is troublesome and Zucker was not
the only one on the receiving end
because in the same tweet storm
yesterday president went after Andy lack
the chairman of NBC News used to run NBC
and he had this to say and made fun of
his name first thing what's going on at
CNN is happening in other networks NBC
News being the worst the good news is
that Andy lack in data why Andy Lackey
is about to be fired question mark for
incompetence and much worse well there's
only rumors to that effect it may well
be that any lack is not going to be
fired and so here's again an instance of
the president United States saying he
approves of the idea of getting rid of
the chairman of NBC News and so I say
this because I'm always consistent on
this if President Obama has said hey Fox
News once you get it rid of that guy
Roger Ailes because Fox's coverage of me
is really unfair and Obama did take
shots at Fox it would have been an
explosion on the right people would say
the president has no right to do this
that that it is you know an assault on
free speech and they would have been
right and so if you're going to say that
if it's aimed at Fox then you have to
also say that if it's aimed at CNN or
NBC or MSNBC and by the way that doesn't
mean you know you've heard me and you've
read me and you see me on the air
criticizing many stories criticizing the
unrelentless li- the relentlessly excuse
me negative coverage of Trump and
particularly on networks that every
single day seem to be furthering a an
anti Trump narrative almost planes in
that audience and so there's no problem
with the president hitting back he has
every right to do that press doesn't
like it and it doesn't matter he has the
right to hit back at news organizations
at journalists by name I would draw the
line at the firing question now a couple
more details in terms of CNN Trump also
went after call Bernstein
on twitter said he's living in the past
made a couple of disparaging remarks
about the one time watergate reporter
who is one of the two main reporters on
the CNN trump tower story the CNN
refuses to retract clarify correct in
any way well if you've watched bernstein
on the air i mean he has been harshly
critical of Trump he has accused Trump
of a malignant presidency he has called
him an authoritarian he says what's
going on in the Trump White House is
worse than Watergate so Karl Varsity is
hardly an unbiased figure when it comes
to reporting on Donald Trump the other
main reporter on the CNN Trump Tower
story Jim Sciuto who was a political
appointee in the Obama administration
now Bernstein for his part hit back he
said he wasn't gonna let a taunt by the
president affect what he called his
lifelong mission to to find out the
truth and hold truth to power so of
course he's gonna defend himself and CNN
is defending Bernstein as well in the
case of NBC there was another sentence
in the tweet that I just read to you
having to do with Andy lack and
incompetence and all that and that
sentence is this when Lester Holt got
caught fudging my tape on Russia they
were hurt badly being NBC was damaged by
this allegation that the president is
talking about that somehow his interview
with Lester Holt last year was edited in
a misleading way and I want to be clear
you can criticize Lester Holt you can
criticize NBC there is no credible
allegation that that interview was
edited in a misleading way in fact NBC
posted the whole 13 minutes online
people could see for themselves not all
of it made it onto the air that's the
way it works the broadcast networks that
interview took place two days after
James was fired by the President and it
was the President and words that were
not edited who said regardless of
recommendation by his Deputy Attorney
General he was gonna fire Comey anyway
and then he brought up the Russia probe
and this Russia and Trump thing is all
was all made up it was the president who
then you know created a firestorm by
tying Comey to the Russia investigation
and suggesting that was the reason he
was fired again no misleading editing so
my feeling is
I've been critical of a lot of the
reporting and the commentary in the
analysis of President Trump
I've been highly critical this
particular CNN story and the mishandling
of it and the lack of an explanation as
to why it hasn't been pulled back to
some degree and I've defended the
president's right to go after news
organizations stories journalists by
name executives by name he has that
right as president sometimes he goes too
far in his language talking about the
Mika Brzezinski get a facelift talking
about enemy the American people when he
goes too far it's my job as a media
analyst to say I think he's going too
far I don't think he should be calling
for the heads of networks to be fired
just because he doesn't like the
coverage I do think that when news
organizations make mistakes about the
president seemed to have loaded panels
against the president seemed to blow
every allegation against the president
real or tendentious or speculation into
a rotating narrative of negative
coverage they provide fodder and fuel
for his attacks on so-called fake news
so the media could do a much better job
here but there are times when the
president ought to restrain himself a
little bit and not call for anybody's
firing hitting the media hard is every
president's right calling for the firing
I think if the shoe was on the other
foot
you'd have conservatives up in arms
liberals saying was fine in my case I
say neither one is fine
you
