Liverpool forward Mane was wanted by Manchester United in 2015, with the Red Devils earmarking him as a priority target

At the time, Van Gaal had urged vice executive-chairman Ed Woodward to secure the signature of Pedro, who was at Barcelona

But when the Spaniard ended up joining, United ended up pushing for Mane instead

The current Liverpool forward was at Southampton, with Van Gaal alerted to his pace and trickery on the flanks

His eye for goal was also a factor. But Mane has now revealed why he rejected a move to Old Trafford

The Liverpool star said: "The wrong team wanted me – Manchester United! "I spoke with Van Gaal, and they even made an offer

"But for me it was not the right club." Mane's decision to join Liverpool has been justified with the Senegal international now one of their most consistent performers

He helped them reach Champions League final last term, scoring in the final as they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid

Liverpool are in the pot for today's European draw. And Mane feels they have what it takes to do one better and win a sixth Champions League title

He added: "It was a very big sign for us.  "It was a bonus for us to learn and get those kinds of experiences

"We have played [big games] already and we know how. Now we have to do the same work on the pitch and the experience we had in the past will help

"It's very early to speak about it but it's why we're always here working: to do anything possible

"We have the quality and everything to go throughout [the tournament], so why not? Why not?"
