 Manchester United boss Mourinho has been tipped to raid Real Madrid for Kroos and Bale repeatedly over the last few months

 The 55-year-old knows his side are lacking stardust as he aims to end the Red Devils' agonising wait for the Premier League title

 And Marca claim Manchester United approached Real about signing both Kroos AND Bale this summer

 The report suggests the duo were on a list of targets Mourinho submitted to United supremo Ed Woodward

 Targeting the treble, Mourinho supposedly felt both players would be key to their chances of silverware after enduring a trophyless campaign last time out

 Bale was seen as the solution to their right-winger woes, having also been tracked every summer for the last five years

 Kroos, meanwhile, was viewed as an upgrade on the current midfielders at Mourinho's disposal

 But Marca say that, when United made their move, Real turned them down, being emphatic in their response

 And that has led to Woodward scrambling for new recruits with the transfer window shutting in just eight days time

 Bale appeared likely to leave Real back in May when he hinted at a move away after the Champions League final

 However, the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has changed matters.  Ronaldo has left the Bernabeu after nine glorious years to join Juventus and, as a result, Real are reluctant to let Bale go too

 Kroos, meanwhile, is viewed as an integral player by new boss Julen Lopetegui. Mourinho recently bemoaned United's failure to land the players he requested, saying: "I'd like to have two more players, although I don't think I'm going to have two more

 "Maybe I'll get one more if that's possible. I gave a list of five players who interest me to the club and I hope we'll get at least one

 "But if it is not possible, then we'll continue fighting, working and believing in those we have

Man Utd transfer news: Jose Mourinho FINES Anthony Martial to push him closer to the exit - Duration: 6:11.

 "Plus we have Rashford, Jones and Lukaku because they gave to the group and to the team three days of their holidays, so they're coming back three days early to try and be available for the team

 "They're not prepared, but they'll be back, and that's the spirit we need, because our first two or three weeks in the Premier League are going to be really hard for us because we didn't prepare for that

 "And with the fantastic spirit we have in the majority of the players, I repeat - in the majority of the players we have a fantastic spirit - we go with everything we have to go to the Premier League

"  Mourinho cut a downbeat figure throughout United's five-game tour of the US and continued that theme by claiming he learned nothing from their victory over Real

 "I didn't learn anything," said Mourinho. "I know what Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez are, I know the kids are very young and need time to grow up

 "I know that my players gave everything and in the last 15 minutes we were dead and they bring on Marco Asensio and Isco, and I thought we wouldn't resist it

 "But the boys tried everything, gave everything and we always have to try to fight for the best result

 "We tried, with the players we had available, to organise the best possible team to defend against them

We were just trying to survive and have the best possible results. "But, as I was saying to the players, some of my players will be in an amazing condition

 "I think he's in a fantastic condition, so let's look at it from a positive side and wait for Lindelof, Rashford, Lukaku and Jones, which are going to be four important players for us
