I WELCOME YOU TO YOUR PROGRAM PRESENCIA.
WE WANT TO START THIS SEGMENT THANKING TO THE WAR VETERANS
FOR TAKING CARE AND DEFEND OUR NATION.
TO TALK ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF NEW ENGLAND'S VETERANS,
WE HAVE INVITED GUMERSINDO GOMEZ,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OF BILINGUAL VETERANS OUTREACH CENTER OF MASS
AND JESUS MANUEL RIOS, WAR VETERAN OF AFGHANISTAN,
MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL GUARD OF PUERTO RICO.
AT WHAT TIME IS A MILITARY SOLDIER IS CONSIDERED VETERAN?
>>>THIS QUESTION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE VETERANS
BECAUSE YOU SEE,
THERE ARE COUNTLESS OF VETERANS IN THE STREETS
THAT SAY THEY ARE NOT VETERANS SIMPLY
BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT GOOD AT WAR AND THAT'S A TOTAL LIE.
A VETERAN IS A VETERAN,
WHEN THIS INDIVIDUAL HAS SERVED 180 DAYS
AT THE MILITARY SERVICE IN UNIFORM,
NOT NECESSARILY BECAUSE THEY SERVED IN A WAR. NOW,
IS THEY GO DIRECTLY TO WAR THOSE ARE NINETY DAYS PLUS ONE,
SO AFTER THAT THIS INDIVIDUAL BECOMES A VETERAN.
SO IF YOU SERVED AND DIDN'T GO TO WAR
THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU ARE NOT A VETERAN.
>>>JESUS TELL ME,
WHERE DID THE IDEA OF JOINING TO MILITARY FIELD CAME FROM.
>>>SOMETHING THAT IS IN THE FAMILY,
MY GRANDFATHER WAS IN THE WWII AND TWO OF MY UNCLES SERVED TOO.
>>>AND HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE?
>>>MY EXPERIENCE WAS A GOOD ONE. I HAD A YEAR IN AFGHANISTAN,
FROM 2011 TO 2012. AS SOON AS I LEFT AFGHANISTAN,
I MOVED TO MASSACHUSETTS, I'VE RECEIVED LOT OF HELP,
I EVEN BOUGHT A HOUSE, SOMETHING THAT MAYBE
I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IF I WASN'T IN THE MILITARY,
IT'S A LITTLE DIFFICULT MAYBE.
I HAVE A GOOD JOB AND THE SERVICES
I'VE RECEIVED AS SOON AS I CAME BACK
HAVE BEEN MORE THAN GOOD, EXCELLENT.
>>>BEING A VETERAN IS NOT AN EASY THING.
YOU WERE FOUR YEARS, SERVED IN THE MILITARY,
I KNOW FOR MY EXPERIENCE, I KNOW WHAT HE WENT THROUGH BECAUSE
I WAS A TRAINER AND I ALSO WAS FIRST CLASS SERGEANT IN MILITARY
AND I KNOW AT WHAT POINT WE TAKE OUR SOLDIERS,
SPECIALLY INFANTRY.
TO THE POINT THAT THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE NOT COMING BACK
AND WE HAD TO TAKE THEM THERE.
WE CRIED, SUFFERED AND FELT HUNGER, LOOK, WE FELT PAIN.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY THING, ONLY THE BRAVE WIN.
>>>IT'S LIKE THEY PROGRAM US AND MORE WHEN YOU GO TO WAR,
WE GO PROGRAMMED, AS SOON AS YOU COME BACK,
THE HARD PART STARTS, WE HAVE TO READAPT TO CIVILIAN LIFE
WHICH IS THE HARDEST PART OF BEING A VETERAN.
WE COME WITH THE MENTALITY AND IN OUR FAMILIES
THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT PART AND MAYBE THEY THINK
AND SEE THINGS IN US THAT WE DON'T SEE AS A PERSON.
>>>IN THIS CASE AS A DIRECTOR,
THERE IS WHERE YOU INTERFERE TO GIVE WHAT KIND OF HELP?
>>>EXACTLY, HERE HE TALK ABOUT A CONDITION
THAT WE AS VETERANS BRING WITH US
AND OUR FAMILIES DON'T UNDERSTAND,
THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH US,
THAT'S WHY WE ENFATIZE SO MUCH THAT THE VETERANS
JUST AS THE FAMILIES, EDUCATE THEMSELVES
TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THE VETERAN.
THERE ARE MANY VETERANS IN THE STREET
BECAUSE THEIR FAMILIES HAVE LEFT THEM THERE,
THE WIVES HAVE KICKED THEM OUT
BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THE INDIVIDUAL,
BUT IF THEY GO TO OUR FACILITY LOCATED AT 281 FRANKLIN,
THERE WE CAN GIVE THEM ALL THE INFORMATION THE FAMILY NEEDS,
THE VETERAN AND THE COMMUNITY.
>>>THERE IS A BIG PERCENTAGE OF SUICIDE RATE IN THE VETERANS,
THERE ARE CERTAIN SEASONS,
THERE ARE CERTAIN SITUATIONS WHERE ONE CAN ENTER TO HELP
IN A MORE EFFECTIVE WAY TO AS COMMUNITY.
>>>THIS IS THE CRITICAL SITUATION,
22 VETERANS ARE TAKING THEIR LIVES EVERY DAY,
BECAUSE THEY ARE STAYING AT HOME
AND THEY ARE NOT LOOKING FOR THE BENEFIT,
THIS PEOPLE ARE AT HOME, ALONE, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS,
MANY OF THEM DECIDE TO TAKE THEIR LIVES.
THEY NEED TO GET UP AND LOOK FOR THE HELP NEEDED.
>>>AT WHAT POINT AFTER LEAVING THE MILITARY FIELD
THEY MUST GO TO FIND HELP?
FAST, FAST, YOU ARRIVE HOME TODAY,
TOMORROW THE VETERAN MUST BE IN AN AGENCY FOR VETERANS,
TRYING TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT BENEFITS THEY HAVE,
BECAUSE THEY DON'T TELL YOU THAT AT THE MILITARY.
MILITARY IS YOU SERVED,
WE TAKE YOU OUT AND YOU GO DEFEND YOURSELF AS GOOD AS YOU CAN.
THAT'S WHY ORGANIZATIONS AS THE ONE I HAVE
ARE IN CHARGE OF EDUCATING THESE VETERANS
AND HELPING THEM LOOK FOR SERVICES, JUST LIKE WE DID WITH HIM.
>>>THOSE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, DON'T LOOK FOR INFORMATION,
AND IF YOU DON'T LOOK FOR IT, NOBODY WILL BRING IT TO YOU.
THE STATE GOVERNMENT AS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
HAVE MANY WAYS OF HELPING, THERE ARE TONS OF ORGANIZATIONS,
LIKE GUMERSINDO'S.
>>>WE ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE STATES
WHERE VETERANS RECEIVE MOST BENEFITS.
>>>THE VETERAN THAT IS IN MASSACHUSETTS IS A LUCKY VETERAN
BECAUSE JUST LIKE YOU SAID,
IT'S THE STATE WITH MORE BENEFITS FOR THE VETERANS
BECAUSE THE FEDERAL STATE BRINGS SPECIALLY CHAPTER 1-15,
THAT'S HOW I CALL IT, IS LIKE A FINANCIAL HELP
IF THE VETERAN DOESN'T HAVE MONEY, CHAPTER 1-15 ENTERS
AND GIVES A MONTHLY ALLOWANCE UNTIL THE INDIVIDUAL FINDS A JOB
AND MAKE THEIR CLAIMS.
SO IF YOU ARE HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS, FIND THE BENEFITS,
BECAUSE THERE ARE, MORE SPECIFICALLY,
I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE VIETNAM VETERANS
THAT WERE OUT IN THE 68 AND NOWADAYS, THIS YEAR,
THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SERVICE. THEY HAD 40, 50 YEARS
IN THE MEANTIME THAT THEY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING
AND NOW THEY HAVE PROBLEMS,
THAT'S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO LOOK FOR THE SERVICES
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
>>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH, THAT'S HOW WE CONCLUDE,
ASKING YOU TO DON'T FORGET THOSE
WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES TO TAKE CARE AND PROTECT OUR NATION.
THEY HAVE FOUGHT FOREIGN WARS FOR THEIR PATRIOTIC LOVE.
DON'T LET OUR WAR VETERANS TO LIVE IN POVERTY,
PAIN AND MORE THAN ANYTHING IN ABANDONMENT.
STAY TUNED, WE HAVE MORE HERE IN PRESENCIA,
MANY VOICES OF ONE COMMUNITY.
