IMMIGRATION IN THIS COUNTRY.
THE DETAILS COMING UP.
♪ [THEME MUSIC] ♪
"INDEPENDENT SOURCES" YOUR
WINDOW TO THE CITY'S ETHNIC AND
IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES.
HERE'S YOUR HOST,
GARRY PIERRE-PIERRE.
>> IMAGINE THAT YOU ARE STANDING
IN FRONT OF A JUDGE WHO IS ABOUT
TO DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE AND
THAT OF YOUR FAMILY AND DESPITE
YOUR GREATEST EFFORTS YOU ARE
NOT ABLE TO GET THROUGH TO HIM
OR HER NOT BECAUSE YOU CAN'T
SPEAK BUT BECAUSE THEY CAN'T
UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.
THAT IS HAPPENING TO MANY
IMMIGRANTS IN THE NEW YORK COURT
SYSTEM TODAY ACCORDING TO LEGAL
SERVICES NYC.
ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF LEGAL
AID ATTORNEYS SURVEYED
SAID THAT THEY HAD CASES
ADJOURNED BECAUSE OF LANGUAGE
BARRIER.
THIS IS WREAKING HAVOC ON LIVES
OF MANY IMMIGRANTS AS WELL AS
CREATING MASSIVE BACK LOG IN THE
COURTS.
I SPOKE WITH THE DIRECTOR OF THE
CIVIL RIGHTS JUSTICE INITIATIVE
AT LSNYC TO FIND
OUT MORE ABOUT WHY THIS
IS THE CASE AND WHAT IS BEING
DONE TO ADDRESS IT.
WHEN WE WERE DISCUSSING THE
STORY OF ONE OF THE PRODUCERS
AND I SAID REALLY IN NEW YORK
CITY WE HAVE ISSUES HOW CAN THAT
BE?
>> I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF
REASONS WHY IT HAPPENS.
SOME OF IT IS SORT OF HOW OUR
COURTS WORK.
I THINK ACROSS THE BOARD
FEDERALLY AND STATE AND CITY
LEVEL COURTS HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE
TO KEEP UP WITH THE VOLUME OF
CASES THAT ARE HAPPENING.
A LOT OF IT REALLY IS THAT.
BUT THEN THE LOGISTICS AND
FUNDING, MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE
KNOW TO USE THEM AND HOW TO USE
THEM IS THE REAL CHALLENGE.
AT THE SAME TIME THE CITY OF NEW
YORK HAS BEEN EXTREMELY DIVERSE
FOREVER SO IT IS NOT REALLY A
SURPRISE THAT WE NEED A LOT OF
SERVICES TO SERVE OUR POPULATION
WELL.
>> HOW IS THE CITY ADDRESSING
THE SHORTAGE?
>> THE OFFICE OF COURT
ADMINISTRATION WHICH ADMINISTERS
ALL THE COURTS IN THE UNITED
STATES HAVE MADE IT A PRIORITY
FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS BUT IT IS
JUST EXECUTING IT THAT I THINK
IS THE PROBLEM.
MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT IN THE
COMING YEAR THEY ARE ROLLING OUT
NEW PRACTICES AND NEW
RECOMMENDATIONS THAT I THINK
WILL HELP.
THERE IS A LOT OF ORGANIZATIONAL
AND SORT OF MODERNIZATION THAT
THE COURTS NEED TO DO IN ORDER
TO CATCH UP AND SERVE PEOPLE
WELL.
>> IS MONEY AT THE CORE OF THIS
PROBLEM OR IS NOT BEING ABLE TO
FIND INTERPRETERS?
WHAT IS AT THE ROOT OF THE
PROBLEM?
>> I THINK MONEY IS PART OF THE
PROBLEM.
FINDING INTERPRETERS WHO CAN
WORK FOR HOWEVER MUCH THE COURTS
PAY IS A PROBLEM.
SOME OF IT IS LOGISTICS.
FOR EXAMPLE, RIGHT NOW IN NEW
YORK CITY WITH THE AFFORDABLE
HOUSING CRISIS THE HOUSING
COURTS ARE GETTING PACKED WITH
PEOPLE.
AND SO IN ORDER TO KEEP UP WITH
THAT DEMAND YOU REALLY HAVE TO
HAVE A SMOOTH RUNNING SCHEDULE
AND A SMOOTH RUNNING COURT
SYSTEM WHERE IN REALITY THE
THE HOUSING COURT OFTEN STILL
WORK ON PAPER, THEY HAVE
PAPER FILES THAT MAKE IT
IMPOSSIBLE TO COORDINATE SO THAT
IS A LARGE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
>> SO FOR SMART PHONES AND
DEVICES, IS THERE ANY TECHNOLOGY
THAT CAN HELP IN THIS PROCESS?
>> I THINK EVERYONE IS REALLY
WAITING FOR THAT FIX THAT WILL
ACTUALLY WORK.
AS IT STANDS I THINK THEY REALLY
DON'T WORK.
THERE IS A GREAT FEAR
IN THE LANGUAGE ACCESS
COMMUNITY THAT
COURTS OR POLICE WILL START
RELYING ON GOOGLE TRANSLATE
WHICH IS NOT THAT GREAT.
>> IT HAS GOTTEN BETTER.
>> AT COMMUNICATING LIKE
ORDERING FOOD AT A RESTAURANT
BUT TALKING ABOUT THINGS WHERE
PRECISION IS REALLY IMPORTANT
ESPECIALLY IN THE COURTS IT'S
JUST NOT FUNCTIONAL.
I THINK WHEN AI CATCHES UP
AND LEARNS ALL THE LANGUAGES IT
WILL BE AN EASY PROBLEM TO FIX.
>> ARE THERE LANGUAGES THAT ARE
PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO FILL?
>> I DON'T KNOW THE DIFFICULTY
FROM WITHIN THE COURT SYSTEM
ABOUT WHY THEY ARE NOT BEING
FILLED BUT WE HAVE FOUND
INTERPRETERS FOR ARABIC
PARTICULARLY DIFFERENT DIALECTS
AND CHINESE IS A TERM THAT
ENCOMPASSES HUNDREDS OF
DIFFERENT DIALECTS.
WE HAVE INTERPRETERS.
BUT THEN THERE IS A WHOLE
PLETHORA OF OTHER DIALECTS THAT
ARE QUITE COMMON IN NEW YORK.
>> GIVE US A SENSE OF WHY IT IS
IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN INTERPRETER
IN COURT.
>> I THINK IT'S HARD FOR PEOPLE
TO UNDERSTAND IF THEY'VE NEVER
LIVED IN A COUNTRY WHERE THEY
DON'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE.
OR THEY DON'T SPEAK THE
LANGUAGE WELL.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS
THAT IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO
COMMUNICATE AT THE LEVEL THAT
YOU WANT TO OR ARE ABLE TO YOU
CAN'T COMMUNICATE PROPERLY.
YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS
GOING ON AND YOU CAN'T
PARTICIPATE IN REALLY IMPORTANT
DECISIONS ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WHERE
YOU LIVE, WHAT BENEFITS, CUSTODY
OF YOUR CHILDREN, THESE HUGELY
IMPORTANT THINGS.
IF YOU CAN'T PARTICIPATE WELL
YOU CAN'T ACHIEVE JUSTICE
ACCURATELY.
SOMEBODY WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH A
LITTLE BIT AND FORCED TO USE
LIMITED ENGLISH CAN SOUND MUCH
LESS CREDIBLE BECAUSE ALL THEY
CAN SAY IS I PAID MY RENT.
THEY CAN'T EXPLAIN WHATEVER IT
IS TO ALLOW THE JUDGE TO
DETERMINE THEIR CREDIBILITY.
>> WHEN POLICE OFFICERS
INTERACT WITH A POTENTIAL
SUSPECT WHAT HAPPENS THERE IF
THE PERSON DOES NOT SPEAK
ENGLISH?
>> SO STARTING SOON THE CITY IS
IN THE PROCESS OF ROLLING OUT A
NEW PROGRAM THAT WILL GIVE
OFFICERS ACCESS TO A PRIVATE
PROVIDER TELEPHONE
INTERPRETATION SERVICES.
SOON I THINK CITY WIDE POLICE
WILL HOPEFULLY BE ABLE TO
INTERACT WITH ANYBODY IN ANY
LANGUAGE THROUGH A TELEPHONE
INTERPRETER.
IT'S BETTER THAN NOT BEING ABLE
TO COMMUNICATE AT ALL.
>> HOSPITALS HAVE BEEN USING
THAT SYSTEM FOR QUITE SOME
TIME.
>> AND PHARMACIES TOO. THERE
WAS A BILL PASSED IN NEW YORK
A FEW YEARS AGO
SO PEOPLE KNOW IT EXISTS.
WE'VE BEEN USING IT AT LEGAL
SERVICES FOR A LONG TIME.
>> NATIONALLY AND FEDERALLY, THE
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PROMISED TO
DEPORT PEOPLE AND THERE HAS BEEN
LOTS OF STORIES ABOUT THAT
HAPPENING, AS WE SPEAK,
PROBABLY.
I SUPPOSE INTERPRETER NEED HAS
NEVER BEEN MORE URGENT AND
GREATER.
>> IT'S HUGELY IMPORTANT.
DURING THE FIRST TRAVEL BAN ONE
OF THE HUGE PROBLEMS AT JFK WAS
PEOPLE WERE NOT GETTING
INTERPRETERS.
ANY NUMBER OF THINGS CAN HAPPEN.
YOU CAN'T PROTECT YOURSELF OR
ASK FOR A LAWYER IF YOU DON'T
UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING.
IT'S MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN
EVER.
AS FAR AS NEW YORK CITY BEING A
SANCTUARY CITY AND TRYING TO
MAKE THE CITY WELCOMING TO
IMMIGRANTS, YOU CAN DEBATE THE
DEGREE OF SANCTUARY BUT IF WE
CAN'T GET PEOPLE ACCESS TO
JUSTICE THEN WE ARE NOT REALLY A
WELCOMING CITY TO IMMIGRANTS.
IT IS HUGELY IMPORTANT THAT THEY
ARE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE
FULLY IN ALL OF OUR GOVERNMENT
SERVICES.
>> AND NATIONALLY IS THERE AN
EFFORT TO REALLY ADDRESS
THIS ISSUE? BECAUSE IT IS
COMING. IF YOU'RE GOING AFTER
UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND
CHANCES ARE THEY DON'T SPEAK
ENGLISH ARE YOU ADVOCATING
ABOUT THAT PART OF IT?
THE FIGHT IS MUCH GREATER THAN
THAT.
BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE SAYING.
>> THERE IS A RATIONAL COALITION
BUT WE ARE ALL SORT OF LOCALLY
FOCUSSED.
SO WE ARE TRYING TO SORT OF --
WE HAVE MONTHLY PHONE CALLS AND
TRY TO BE IN TOUCH WITH EACH
OTHER.
ONE OF THE BIG PROBLEMS I THINK
IS THAT NATIONALLY AT THE
FEDERAL LEVEL THE COORDINATION
ABOUT LANGUAGE ACCESS
IS DONE HISTORICALLY TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.
WHETHER THEY NOW ARE GOING TO
PRIORITIZE LANGUAGE ACCESS WE'LL
SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
>> IT IS INTERESTING THAT
WASHINGTON WANTS TO HIRE
10,000 ICE OFFICERS BUT AT THE
SAME TIME NOT BUDGETING FOR
THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE
ACTIONS.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
ONE OF THE PROBLEMS IS THAT FOR
A LOT OF FEDERAL COURT CASES,
MOST FEDERAL COURT CIVIL CASES
THERE IS NOT A REQUIREMENT.
NEW YORK STATE, THEORITICALLY
EVERYONE GETS AN INTERPRETER.
IN THE FEDERAL
COURTS THAT IS NOT THE CASE.
IF YOU ARE CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL
VIOLATION OF THE CRIME OR BEING
DEPORTED YOU'LL GET AN
INTERPRETER BUT IF YOU'RE
BEING SUED IN A FEDERAL COURT
YOU DON'T GET AN INTERPRETER.
AND THAT'S A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
>> UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE OUT OF
TIME.
THANKS FOR JOINING US.
>> THANKS SO MUCH.

WANTS TO CHANGE THE CONVERSATION

>>> JULISSA ARCE,
WELCOME TO "INDEPENDENT

>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME ON
THE SHOW.
>> YOUR BOOK, "MY UNDERGROUND
AMERICAN DREAM" WHY DID YOU
DECIDE TO WRITE THIS BOOK?
>> I WANTED TO WRITE A BOOK TO
TELL A DIFFERENT STORY OF
IMMIGRATION FROM WHAT EVERYONE
IS USED TO HEARING.
I THINK IMMIGRATION IS OFTEN
TOLD THROUGH A POLITICAL LENS,
THROUGH A NUMBERS GAME
AND NOT ENOUGH THROUGH HUMAN
PERSPECTIVE. SO I WANTED TO GIVE
A HUMAN PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT
IT MEANS TO BE AN IMMIGRANT TO
THIS COUNTRY.
>> NOW, YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT
YOUR LIFE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU
MENTION IN THE BOOK AND I WANT
TO READ A PASSAGE FROM THE BOOK
HERE SPECIFICALLY AND THEN WE
WILL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT.
THIS IS JUST AFTER YOU ARE TOLD
YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATION.
YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK "I DIDN'T
UNDERSTAND THE TRUE
RAMIFICATIONS OF MY MOTHER'S
WORDS. ALL I'D HEARD WAS THAT
I COULDN'T HAVE MY PARTY, AND
I KNEW THIS WASN'T A PARTY THAT
I COULD THROW MYSELF WHEN
I WAS ALL GROWN UP AND RICH.
IT WASN'T A MOMENT I
COULD RE-CREATE.
IT WOULD BE GONE FOREVER.
I WAS TOO YOUNG OR MAYBE
TO NAIVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT
ON THAT NIGHT MY MOTHER
HAD SHARED A SECRET THAT
WOULD DEFINE AND HAUNT ME
FOR YEARS TO COME."
FOR ME THAT WAS A REALLY
POWERFUL GRAPH IN YOUR BOOK
IT KIND OF TALKS ABOUT TO ME OR
AT LEAST I GOT FROM IT THAT YOU
WERE STRUGGLING AT THAT MOMENT.
IT WAS A BIG MOMENT REVELATION
FOR YOU.
WHAT OF THAT MOMENT WAS THAT FOR
YOU LIKE?
COULD YOU WALK ME THROUGH YOUR
PROCESS THERE OF WHAT YOU FELT
WHEN YOUR MOM TOLD YOU THAT?
>> A LOT OF UNDOCUMENTED YOUNG
PEOPLE THAT CAME HERE,
BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS BROUGHT
THEM HERE, I THINK
ALL OF US HAVE THIS ONE MOMENT
WHERE WE REALIZE THAT WE ARE
UNDOCUMENTED.
IT'S NOT LIKE WE CAME HERE ON
OUR OWN AND THEREFORE
WE ALWAYS KNOW WE'RE
UNDOCUMENTED.
FOR ME THAT MOMENT IS THE MOMENT
THAT I FOUND OUT THAT I WAS
UNDOCUMENTED.
BUT ON THAT EVENING AS I WROTE
IN THE BOOK I DIDN'T REALIZE THE
REAL CONSEQUENCE WAS THAT I WAS
UNDOCUMENTED AND THEREFORE MY
LIFE IN AMERICA WAS GOING TO BE
VERY CHALLENGING AND VERY
DIFFICULT.
BUT THAT NIGHT I REALLY WAS JUST
SAD THAT I COULDN'T HAVE A
PARTY.
I WAS 14 YEARS OLD I THINK IS A
NORMAL REACTION NOT TO REALIZE
THAT THE WORDS MY MOTHER TOLD ME
HAD RAMIFICATIONS THAT ARE MUCH
BIGGER AND ARE GOING TO IMPACT
MY LIFE IN A DEEPER WAY.
>> YOU MENTIONED THE FACT THAT
YOU WANTED TO CHANGE THE
NARRATIVE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT
IMMIGRANTS.
ONE OF THE THINGS YOU STRESS IN
THE BOOK IS THE FACT THAT YOUR
FAMILY HAD SUCCESS BUSINESS.
YOU HAD ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS
FROM EARLY ON SELLING TO THE
GUYS UNLOADING THE
TRUCKS NEAR WHERE YOU LIVE.
IS THAT A BIG PART OF IT, THIS
NOTION THAT NOT ALL IMMIGRANTS
ARE NECESSARILY POOR OR DOWN ON
THEIR LUCK.
>> IMMIGRANTS COME HERE TO TAKE
FROM AMERICA AND THAT WE COME
HERE TO GET ON WELFARE, BECAUSE
THAT A LOT OF TIMES IS THE
NARRATIVE.
SO WHAT I WANTED TO SHOW IN MY
BOOK WAS THAT IN FACT IMMIGRANTS
COME HERE FROM ALL TYPES OF BACK
GROUNDS.
NOT EVERY IMMIGRANT THAT COMES
HERE IS A POOR IMMIGRANT WHO HAS
NOTHING BACK HOME.
THE IMMIGRANTS WHO ACTUALLY
LEAVE BEHIND LAND AND LEAVE
BEHIND INCREDIBLE CAREERS
BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO COME
TO AMERICA TO GIVE THEIR
CHILDREN A BETTER LIFE.
ALL WE WANTED TO DO WAS JUST GET
BY WE WOULD HAVE JUST STAYED
WHERE WE WERE.
WE MAKE INCREDIBLE SACRIFICES.
I'M SURE YOU READ THE SACRIFICES
I HAD TO MAKE IN MY LIFE.
WE DO THAT BECAUSE WE WANT
SOMETHING GREATER.
WE ARE SEEKING SOMETHING
GREATER.
>> ONE SACRIFICE IS THAT YOU
GIVE UP YOUR HIGH POWERED JOB AT
GOLDMAN SACHS.
I WANT TO STEP BACK AND THEN GO
FORWARD AND TALK TO YOU ABOUT
YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING THERE.
YOU TALK ABOUT IT, IT WAS ONE OF
YOUR BIGGEST DREAMS TO WORK
THERE.
I WANT TO ASK WHAT WAS IT LIKE
WORKING THERE BEING
UNDOCUMENTED?
WE WILL GET TO THAT FIRST.
SECONDLY, KIND OF TALK ABOUT WHY
YOU DECIDED TO LEAVE.
>> WELL, WORKING IN WALL STREET
IS VERY STRESSFUL. IT'S A
VERY HIGH PACED ENVIRONMENT.
I HAD A REALLY INCREDIBLE CAREER
WORKING THERE. FIRST AT
GOLDMAN SACHS AND THEN AT
MERRILL LYNCH. I DID REALLY WELL
AND I ENJOYED THAT
REALLY FAST PACED ENVIRONMENT.
I WASN'T CONSTANTLY EVERY DAY
THINKING I'M UNDOCUMENTED.
REALLY DAY TO DAY I WAS
MORE WORRIED ABOUT MY NEXT
PROMOTION OR MY NEXT
RAISE OR THE NEXT YEILD I
HAD TO CLOSE
AND IN A LOT OF WAYS THAT WAS
BENEFICIAL TO ME BECAUSE THEN I
DIDN'T SPEND SO MUCH TIME
THINKING ABOUT MY IMMIGRATION
STATUS.
I WAS UNDOCUMENTED AND THAT FEAR
THAT ON ANY DAY I COULD BE FOUND
OUT AND SOMEBODY COULD REALIZE
THAT I WASN'T REALLY SUPPOSED TO
BE THERE, THAT FEAR WAS ALWAYS
THERE.
THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I COULDN'T
DENY THE FACT THAT I WAS
UNDOCUMENTED BECAUSE THERE WERE
OPPORTUNITIES THAT I COULDN'T
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AND THINGS I
COULDN'T DO BECAUSE OF MY
IMMIGRATION STATUS.
>> DID THAT LEAD YOU TO LEAVING
GOLDMAN SACHS OR SOMETHING
ELSE?
>> I DON'T WANT TO GIVE TOO MUCH
AWAY, BUT I'M ACTUALLY NOW A
U.S. CITIZEN.
SO WHEN I LEFT GOLDMAN I
ACTUALLY WAS A PERMANENT
RESIDENT.
I HAD MY GREEN CARD.
IT WASN'T SO MUCH THAT
FRUSTRATION THAT LED ME TO
LEAVE IT WAS REALLY THE
REALIZATION THAT, WELL TWO
THINGS. ONE, IT WAS THIS
REALIZATION THAT MY
WHOLE LIFE
I HAD ONE GOAL IN MIND AND THAT
GOAL WAS HOW DO I BECOME
AMERICAN.
I SAY IT IN QUOTATIONS BECAUSE I
FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN AMERICAN
FOR MUCH LONGER THAN I'VE
HAD A U.S. PASSPORT.
HOW DO I FIX MY IMMIGRATION
STATUS?
I HAD THIS IDEA THAT MAYBE I
COULD GET REALLY RICH SOMEHOW I
WOULD BE ABLE TO FIX MY
IMMIGRATION STATUS.
THAT LINE THAT WE OFTEN TALK
ABOUT DOESN'T EXIST FOR MANY,
MANY PEOPLE.
IT IS ONE THING FOR THE ONE
PURPOSE.
I NEVER REALLY STEPPED BACK TO
REALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT IT IS
THAT I WANTED TO DO WITH MY
LIFE.
AND THE SECOND WAS THAT THERE
ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO
FEEL TODAY EVERY DAY THERE ARE
THINGS THAT I DON'T DO AND NOW
HAVE TO LIVE IN EVEN MORE FEAR
THEN I HAVE TO LIVE WITH IN
THIS ADMINISTRIATION AND
SO GIVEN THE TWO THINGS
COMBINED I REALIZED
I CAN USE MY STORY TO
CHANGE THE NARRATIVE.
I CAN PERHAPS GIVE SOMEONE A
DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THAT THEY
HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED BEFORE AND
I CAN ALSO EMPOWER OTHER PEOPLE
WHO ARE IN MY SITUATION OR OTHER
PEOPLE WHO PERHAPS DON'T FEEL
LIKE THEY ARE PART OF WHAT MAKES
AMERICA.
>> DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR BOOK
CURRENTLY HOLDS MORE WEIGHT THAN
THE IT COULD BEFORE THE CURRENT
ADMINISTRATION?
>> I KNOW IMMIGRANTS ARE SEEING
SO MUCH ABOUT HOW IMMIGRANT
COMMUNITIES ARE BEING PERSECUTED
AND CRIMINALIZED.
THAT HAPPENS TO ME MY WHOLE
LIFE.
IN THAT SENSE IT IS NOT
SOMETHING THAT IS NEW.
IT CERTAINLY IS A EXACERBATED
BY THIS ADMINISTRATION
I THINK AT THE CORE THE AMERICAN
DREAM IS REALLY AN AMERICAN
STORY THAT TRANSCENDS SORT OF
WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
BECAUSE WHEN I LOOK AT MY LIFE A
STORY ABOUT OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
AND PERSEVERING.
AND THOSE PRINCIPLES ARE TRUE
REGARDLESS OF WHO IS PRESIDENT.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
I KNOW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN VERY
ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY REACHING
OUT AND TALKING TO PEOPLE.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THAT,
SOME OF THE WORK YOU HAVE BEEN
DOING.
>> SO I CO FOUNDED A SCHOLARSHIP
FUND IN NEW YORK CITY.
WE PROVIDE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
AND MENTORSHIPS TO IMMIGRANTS IN
NEW YORK CITY REGARDLESS OF
THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS.
THIS YEAR WE WILL BE GIVING OUT
OUR FIFTH ROUND OF SCHOLARSHIPS.
WE HAVE GIVEN OUT COLLEGE
SCHOLARSHIPS WHICH CHANGED LIVES
FOR A LOT OF OUR SCHOLARS.
FOR A LOT OF THEM WE ARE THE
ONLY OPTION THAT THEY HAVE.
THERE ISN'T ANY OTHER FINANCIAL
AID OR SCHOLARSHIPS THEY HAVE
ACCESS TO. SO THAT'S PART OF
THE WORK THAT I DO.
I AM ALSO ON THE BOARD OF
NATIONAL IMMIGRATION LAW
CENTER. AND RIGHT NOW AS
WE'VE SEEN WITH RECENT EVENTS
WITH THE MUSLIM BAN FOR
EXAMPLE THE JUDICIARY BRANCH IS
OUR ONLY SORT OF LINE OF
DEFENSE AND THE IMMIGRATION LAW
CENTER HAS BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT
ALONG SIDE THE ACLU FOR FILING
THIS AND OTHER THINGS FROM
HAPPENING.
I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE WORK
THAT THOSE ORGANIZATIONS ARE
CARRYING OUT.
>> READING THE BOOK, THERE IS
SOMETHING THAT I CAN'T GET BACK
TO AS IT GOES TO WHY IT TOOK
YOUR PARENTS SO LONG TO TELL YOU
THAT SECRET THAT THEY KEPT FROM
YOU ABOUT YOUR STATUS.
WHY WAS THAT THE CASE?
>> I THINK JUST LIKE EVERY
PARENT YOU ALWAYS WANT THE BEST
FOR YOUR CHILD.
I THINK THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN
ISSUES PERHAPS THAT YOU DON'T
WANT TO DISCUSS WITH A CHILD
BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO
TRAUMATIZE THEM, YOU
DON'T WANT TO WORRY THEM ABOUT
SOMETHING THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING
ABOUT.
AND ACTUALLY MY VISA DIDN'T
EXPIRE UNTIL I WAS 14.
SO MY MOM DID TELL ME MY VISA
EXPIRED THAT I COULDN'T GO TO
MEXICO BECAUSE MY VISA EXPIRED
AND THAT MADE ME UNDOCUMENTED.
I DID FIND OUT PRETTY SHORTLY
AFTER.
THEY DID FIND OUT UNTIL THEY
WERE GOING TO COLLEGE OR UNTIL
THEY WERE 16 TRYING TO GET A
DRIVER'S LICENSE.
I THINK IT IS BECAUSE PARENTS
WOULD RATHER ASK THEM ON FUTURE
THAN WORRYING ABOUT SOMETHING
THAT WE CAN'T CONTROL AND THERE
IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT.
>> SO I JUST WANTED TO TALK TO
YOU ABOUT WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES
FOR THIS BOOK?
IT HAS BEEN OUT A COUPLE OF
MONTHS NOW.
IT IS AVAILABLE IN BOOK STORES
AND AMAZON.COM AND SO FORTH.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE CAN COME UP?
DO YOU INTEND TO PERHAPS STIR
MORE CONVERSATION ABOUT
IMMIGRATION?
>> YEAH.
IF SOMEBODY PICKS UP THE BOOK
AND THEY CAN AT THE VERY LEAST
HAVE A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
ABOUT THE ISSUE THEN I FEEL I
WOULD HAVE DONE MY JOB IN
WRITING THIS BOOK.
I AM REALLY EXCITED THAT THE
BOOK IS CURRENTLY BEING
DEVELOPED FOR A TELEVISION
SERIES WITH AMERICA FERRERA
HELPING ME TO PRODUCE IT.
TO ME THAT KIND OF JUST SHOWS
THE NEED FOR THESE PERSONAL
STORIES THAT ARE NOT JUST ONE
DIMENSIONAL. BECAUSE AT CORE,
WE AS HUMAN BEINGS,
WE ARE COMPLICATED.
SO I THINK YOU GET A LOT OF THAT
COMPLEXITY.
I'M AN IMMIGRANT BUT AT THE END
OF THE DAY I'M A HUMAN BEING.
AND I FACE CHALLENGES THAT MANY
PEOPLE FACE.
>> IT IS VERY SIGNIFICANT THAT
YOU SAID YOU WERE A HUMAN BEING.
IN THE BOOK YOU SAID THAT YOU
DIDN'T FEEL QUITE HUMAN WHEN YOU
FELT LIKE YOU WERE ON THE
OUTSIDE. I GUESS WE ALL GO
THROUGH THAT RIGHT, LIVING
IN TWO WORLDS.

New Program in the Philippines Ministers to Overseas Workers
FEBC Staff Attend IC Conference in Korea
A listener Story from India
Earlier this year, we launched a brand new station in Odessa, Ukraine, with a potential
listening audience of 1.2 million people.
In addition, we just launched a new station in the Eastern Ukraine city of Shastya,
right in the heart of the conflict zone.
With these two new sites, FEBC now has 4 different stations broadcasting the Gospel in the country—
with the opportunity to expand to many more cities.
Thank you for praying and supporting this ministry; God is truly making Himself known in Ukraine.
In Thailand, radio distribution has continued in 4 provinces,
so far totaling 1,020 radios distributed in 2017.
Three groups of staff members are on the road again to meet with more potential listeners
in those areas, to spread the word about FEBC's programs
and to connect listeners to local churches in the region.
Pray for the safety of the teams as they travel, and that listeners would connect with local
churches to further strengthen their faith.
A new program in the Philippines called "Serving the Overseas Filipino Workers" has been
created to minister to the millions of Filipinos who work in other countries
and send money home to their families.
The program helps listeners deal with family issues that arise from being so far away,
as well as providing seminars and other resources to communities that have many family members
working abroad.
FEBC's annual International Council conference is being held this month in Korea.
Country directors from most of the countries we work in, as well as our board of directors,
are attending to seek unity in vision and strategy.
Please pray the time would be filled with fruitful discussion, and a time for FEBC staff
from around the world to interact and connect with one another.
We're so encouraged by the listener responses we receive every day at FEBC,
and we want you to be encouraged too.
Here's our monthly testimony, this time from a man in India.
Thank you for watching FEBC news and updates from our ministry fields around the world.
