In the country of the Blue Lotus
evrything is super sized
the time of transport, the quantity of food on the table,
the beer consumed, the people in Beijing,
the number of Chinese tourists, the size of the buildings, and many other things
That's this exageration that made this trip in the Empire of the Middle so unique
The language barrier overpassed thanks to WeChat
and helped by our Chinese Dad, Sun
We have discovered with China, a very surprising country
The variety of cuisines, each better than the last
and the kindness of its inhabitants
make of this country-continent under perpetual construction
a place terribly attaching
Bus, metro, train, bicycle, plane,
all the means are good to travel through this immense teritory
Take you chopsticks and follow us
We'll tell you more about the future of food in China
China is under construction, from buildings to bridges or train lines
being built at an impressive paste
the super growth of this country makes it the most powerful country
This industrial revolution at a continent scale has its downs
Speaking about the Chinese food system,
It's 230 millions producers
spread on the only 15% of arable lands that counts the country
This space constraint, and an always growing demand
of the 1.3 billion consumers
Encourage producers to use more and more chemicals
to increase their production
To fight against these abuses, a few citizen initiatives
are emerging to ensure the food safety in the whole country
We met Erica Huang the founder of one of these initiatives,
Farm to Neighbors
Hi Erica, you're the founder of Farm to Neighbors here in Beijing
Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and Farm to Neighbors?
I am from Taiwan originaly, I've been in Beijing for 5 years
and everyone knows that Beijing is a metropolitan city
with many people
But there are problems with air polution, and food safety is a big issue in China
Second year when I came here, I developed my own health issues
and during that time I wanted to find clean and safe food for myself
This is the beginning point, when I started Farm to Neighbors
Erica selects the farmers herself,
and organises markets every weeks
between local producers and consumers in Beijing
In such way, she offers to this growing community of consumers
the possibility to consume high quality products and eat better
The idea is to connect people who have the need
for safe food, clean food, nutritious food, fresh food
to the people who are producing these things
So that the producers and the consumers can come to one place
and know each others to build this trust realtionship
Is there a big trust issue?
Yes, there is a big trust issue in China
So what we are doing as a Revolution
is that we want to encourage people to start trusting each others again
People are not very used to coming to farmers markets
or dealing with producers directly
We as a team, we will promote for these producers
and we will find a location to gather them
We sort of become the bridge between the two sides
You are connecting people around good food
As you're leading the food revolution,
What's your ideal for the future?
I wish there will be a farmers market for every small community
I want people to get into the habbits
of buying from these small producers
instead of going to supermarkets to buy from factories
That's kind of my ideal
You are the 1st one leading the change here in Beijing
Humm, I think I am the very few ones,
I don't know if I am the 1st one, but yeah, still doing it since 2014
Citizens initiatives like Erica's
offer the opportunity to better analyze the consumers' needs
as they are closer to them
With Farm to Neighbors,
Erica offers the opportunity to eliminate the intermediaries
By bringing together small producers and consumers
This initiative, offers a unique traceability in China
Food safety is the major preocupation of chinese consumers
In the other side, it offers visibility and right prices to the producers
By offering them an alternative
to the conventional distributors or cooperatives
The meeting between producers and consumers
offers the opportunity to restore meaning to the purshase
and reconnect the urban population to the agricultural environment
Well, it's true that the project has its own limits
Such as the very long time to switch from one system to the other
There is also the problem of the arable lands
In China, many lands are either
too poluted, arid, or suffer form the massive urbanisation
In the long term, the number of producers might be too small
to support this growing system
Developing Farm to Neighbors
through the creation of subsidiaries in most of the Chinise big cities
Why not with the help of the Government
who is actually supporting more and more sustainalble initiatives
This would allow the creation of a gigantic network at national level
and thus put in contact sustainable producers
with as many consumers as possible willing to better consume
We can also take a look at similar initiatives in France
such as La Ruche qui dit Oui!
most of the AMAP (associations supporting small farming) or the Louve coopérative
