Kovacic joined the Blues on a one-year loan deal from Real Madrid in a move which sweetened the exit of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois

The midfielder has made six appearances for the Blues so far this term, cementing his place in Maurizio Sarri side with some strong performances

Kovacic impressed against Liverpool during their midweek Carabao Cup victory at Anfield

Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring as the hosts took an early lead but late goals from Emerson Palmieri and Eden Hazard ensured Chelsea's place in the fourth round

And 24-year-old Kovacic was quick to speak highly of the club's desire to secure success this campaign following the win over Liverpool

"We need to be focussed on the target and we need to win," he said after the game

"The most important thing in football is to play well and to win. "To win is really important for our group and we played a good game and we won again and I'm really really happy about this

" "I'm enjoying it a lot since I came," Kovacic continued. "I'm really happy here, it's amazing and it's only important that the team is playing good and winning

That's the most important thing." Kovacic lauded team-mate Hazard after the Belgium netted his outrageous solo goal five minutes from time

"He's an incredible, incredible player," Kovacic added. "He helps us a lot but the team is also helping him so it's a nice connection and of course it's a beautiful goal and he deserves it

" And Kovacic's impressive performances and positive comments about the Blues have resulted in many fans calling for the club to make his loan deal permanent

"Sign him for good @ChelseaFC," a fan tweeted. And one fan responded with: "I mean we HAVE TO right? He's sensational

" Another said: "Give him a long contract!" "I will be really sad if you don't sign this lad permanently," a fourth fan wrote "It's insane how much our midfield has improved this season with him and Jorginho," another fan commented

"He's a delight to watch on the ball."

Arsenal news: Why Mesut Ozil has played a part in Aaron Ramsey contract breakdown - pundit - Duration: 3:48.

That's the view of Sky Sports pundit Andy Townsend, who says the fact that the midfielder earns much less than Ozil is a factor

Discussions over a new deal for Ramsey look to be over after the Wales international failed to agree terms with the club

And, as things stand, the 27-year-old will have the option of signing a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January 1

Despite being the Gunners' longest-serving player and starting in five of their six Premier League games this season, it could be the end of the road for the midfielder in north London

Former Germany international Ozil was left in a similar situation before eventually signing a £350,000-a-week deal at the club in February

And former Aston Villa and Chelsea defender Townsend says that this could have played a part in Ramsey's contract talks breaking down

"It's a factor," he told Sky Sports. "They're all big boys, and know certain players will get a lot more than others

"That's the same at any club, but when you're in virtually the same position on the pitch, he's probably thinking that if they're paying Ozil that amount, he will never be in a stronger position than he is now in terms of age, experience and everything else, and sometimes you have to stand firm

Aaron's never been blessed with great pace, he's 27 and at the peak of his powers, he's not going to get any quicker, and he might not get a tremendous amount slower

He's that sort of player."He's as productive as Ozil, I think, and if I was Ramsey right now and I was getting offered a third he's getting, I wouldn't take it either

".Ramsey joined the Gunners in 2008 in a £4.8m move from hometown club Cardiff and has played a key part in two FA Cup final wins

And Arsenal legend Ian Wright echoed Townsend's comments, saying Ramsey has every right to feel aggrieved at Ozil's bumper deal, given his inconsistent form for the Gunners

He added: "If I'm Aaron Ramsey, I'm thinking I've done a lot more, in respect of what I'm doing at the club in the time I've been here compared to what Mesut Ozil has done up to this point, albeit under a different regime

"Ivan Gazidis has to take the blame for the fact Ramsey now finds himself in the situation he does, and I'm pleased Arsenal are showing a ruthless side taking contracts off the table, and they're showing that it's not what it's like now

If you want to go, you can go."I don't have a problem with that either. I would like him to stay, but if he wants to run it down and leave, then let him leave and we'll find someone else

Arsenal welcome Watford to the Emirates on Saturday as they look to make it five wins in a row in the Premier League

It remains to be seen whether Ramsey will be as heavily involved in the upcoming matches under Unai Emery

Arsenal news: One thing makes Alexandre Lacazette DEADLIER than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - Duration: 2:27.

That's the verdict of Gunners hero Martin Keown who says the ball seems to 'explode off his foot'

Lacazette blasted Arsenal ahead against Everton with a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the area last weekend

The Frenchman continued his good form by scoring against Brentford in the Carabao Cup in midweek too

Boss Unai Emery has also has Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at his disposal

And while the duo are forging a profitable partnership in the Gunners' attack, Keown has been more impressed with Lacazette of the duo

"When I was a young kid, I remember Peter Lorimer for his incredibly hard shots," he wrote in the Daily Mail

"We all want to know who is the quickest player in the Premier League, or who covers the greatest distance in a game

"But who hits the ball the hardest? Whose shots are the fastest? Who has a cannon for a foot? I suspect Alexandre Lacazette would be up there

"The Arsenal forward generates such power in his shooting, he punishes the ball when he hits it

"It looks emphatic. It explodes off his foot."Lacazette hammers the ball towards goal and bang, it hits the target before you blink

That is one of his greatest weapons. He has impressed me so far. Emery has guided the Gunners to six consecutive wins in all competitions after losing his first two games in charge

Arsenal will look to keep their winning streak alive tomorrow as they welcome Watford to the Emirates (3pm)

The Hornets are currently above their London rivals in fourth place having taken 13 points from six games

Man Utd news: Who could replace Paul Pogba at Old Trafford? Shock favourite - Duration: 3:32.

The World Cup winner was seen on video arguing with Mourinho during training on Wednesday after Manchester United lost to Derby in the Carabao Cup

Pogba was in the stands for the game, having been told he will never captain the side again, and annoyed Mourinho with a social media post and they exchanged words the next day in training

And it is understood United are ready to sell the midfielder for £200m with Barcelona, PSG, Juventus and Real Madrid the potential destinations

But who could United replace Paul Pogba with? We asked the bookies who the most likely Pogba replacements were

Betfair have priced a long list of potential replacements including: Nabil Fekir 9/1 Thiago Alcantara 16/1 Dele Alli 25/1 Toni Kroos 33/1 N'Golo Kante 33/1 Luka Modric 25/1 Ivan Rakitic 25/1 Marco Verratti 25/1 Miralem Pjanic 10/1 Christian Eriksen 12/1 A deal for Fekir would be a stunning turn of events after his move to Liverpool collapsed in the summer

Fekir was all set to join Liverpool and had done his in-house media interviews before the deal fell through

It is believed complications with the medical led Liverpool to try and renegotiate the fee but Lyon refused

But the France ace has started the season well with three goals in five games, including one in the 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League

United were linked with a host of players in the summer but were only able to sign Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant

Mourinho was desperate to add another defender to bolster his squad but Ed Woodward was unable to bring anyone from his list in

United have started the season poorly and are already eight points behind leaders Liverpool after six games

After the 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend Pogba demanded a change in approach. "We're at home, and we should play much better against Wolves," said Pogba

"When we're at home, we should attack, attack, attack. That's Old Trafford. We're here to attack

I think teams are scared when they see Manchester United attacking and attacking

"That was our mistake.  "We should just attack and press, like we did against Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal last season

When we play like this, it's easier for us." And when asked how they can change their approach he threw Mourinho under the boss

"I can't tell you because I'm a player," said Pogba. "It's not me. "I am not the manager, I cannot, like, say that, but obviously we should show more options of playing

"But I cannot say that, because I'm a player. That's my way of thinking - we should move better

We should move more, yeah."

Arsenal news: Gunners legend Ian Wright PLEASED with Aaron Ramsey contract saga - Duration: 4:30.

The Welsh midfielder's days with the Gunners look numbered with Arsenal having pulled out of an agreement before a final contract was drawn up, according to BBC Sport

That was with a four-year deal having been in place for Ramsey to commit his future to the club

But the club's long-serving player now looks set to depart either in January or next summer with his Emirates Stadium contract expiring on June 30 next summer

The 27-year-old has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, Juventus and Lazio although Arsenal could look to force a departure in January in order to avoid losing their vice-captain for free

BBC Sport insist neither Ramsey's representatives or Arsenal would divulge exactly why the deal collapsed

But some suggestions say that Ramsey's contract dispute revolves around wages with Arsenal's highest paid player on £350,000-a-week in Mesut Ozil

Ramsey - who has been at the club since joining from Cardiff in 2008 - reportedly wants his importance to the team to be recognised by his own pay-packet

Club hero Wright - who scored 185 goals in 288 games at Arsenal - admits he could sympathise with Ramsey if that was the case but insists if his heart is set on leaving then the north London club should not stand in his way

"If I'm Aaron Ramsey, I'm thinking I've done a lot more, in respect of what I'm doing at the club in the time I've been here compared to what Mesut Ozil has done up to this point, and he's been given everything he's wanted albeit under a different regime," Wright told The Debate on Sky Sports

"We're talking about Ivan Gazidis. He shouldn't be let off in respects of blame when talking about players running down contracts

"He has to take the blame for the fact Ramsey now finds himself in this situation

"I am pleased Arsenal are showing a different ruthless side taking contracts off the table because now they're showing that that's not what it's like now, we've got different people running the ship and that's what's going to happen

"The contract's off the table and if you want to go, you can go whenever it happens

"I haven't got a problem with that either. I would like him to stay, but if he feels like wants to run it down because he wants to leave, then let's let him leave and find someone else

"  Wright also cleared for greater clarity over the situation with the collapse in terms yet to be cleared up

"He's started every game so far so Unai definitely likes him. I don't know where it's come from where they've said, 'Take the contract off the table' especially when he's started every game

"It's a confusing one for me because that says to me that Aaron should see that the manager obviously likes him so then sort the deal out, get it done, let people know - even feed stuff to the press that he wants to sign

"'This is what's happening, this is the stumbling block' so we can say, 'At least he wants to sign!' We're not hearing anything

"It seems like, to me, that he wants to go and that's a sad thing because I actually wanted him to stay

" It remains to be seen whether Ramsey will keep his place in the team for Arsenal's clash with Watford tomorrow (3pm)

Emery's side are seeking a seventh straight win in all competitions.

Breaking News - Shane McGuigan on why he has 'huge respect' for Chris Eubank Jnr - Duration: 8:47.

Seven long, frustrating months have passed since Shane McGuigan masterminded George Groves' victory over Chris Eubank Jnr in their bloody battle of Britain

But on Friday night, more than 3,000 miles from the Manchester Arena, the two rivals will share the same ring once more

In the unfamiliar surroundings of Saudi Arabia, Groves faces Liverpool's Callum Smith for the Muhammad Ali Trophy and his WBA super-middleweight crown, while Eubank begins his road back to the top against JJ McDonagh on the undercard

For McGuigan, 30, the World Boxing Super Series final in Jeddah is the latest stop on a career that began amid the green fields and rolling hills of Somerset

It was during his days at Millfield that the 14-year-old took his first tentative steps into the sport that funded his private education

The prestigious school is a far cry from the myriad modest gyms where Groves and many others learned their trade

But as the son of a boxing icon, McGuigan is used to taking the roads less travelled

'I feel like it opened my mind to the opportunities of life because everyone there has come from different backgrounds, some might be lawyers' kids, entrepreneurs' kids, they might be on scholarships - Millfield gave a lot of scholarships so you had kids coming from the estate just round the corner,' he tells Sportsmail at his Wandsworth gym earlier this year

'I used to go to private school and go to a boxing gym afterwards and I would be knocking lumps out of people from the estate but that's what made me feel normal

There would be kids coming in helicopters and when you look at my cousins they all come from Clones (in Ireland)

'We don't come from money. Although I'm first generation success as it were - Dad did well for himself - our immediate family wasn't

So it made me feel normal going to the gyms and I just loved to scrap, to fight.' Despite his name and the talent he inherited, the successful amateur was given few favours from his fellow fighters

'I used to get ripped all the time. Because I went to private school I had to train with the seniors when I was a junior,' he recalls

'But it built character, it built that thick skin and if someone like (Chris) Eubank (Snr) tries to call me out publicly and shame me, it doesn't faze me one bit

You laugh at it because that's just the way I grew up.' Before his son's defeat in February, Eubank Snr labelled McGuigan a 'PE teacher' and questioned whether a man who quit fighting at 21 had the credentials to train a top boxer

But as both McGuigan and Eubank Jnr know, any son of a famous fighter is guaranteed a tough schooling

'I don't resent anything, the only thing that put pressure on me was just the target, the McGuigan name

(It) was like a target on my forehead,' he says. 'I remember going and sparring. these kids just want to chin you and Eubank had it

He had it the whole way through his amateur career as well.' These shared experiences mean that, despite the bad blood that filled the build-up to Groves' victory, McGuigan has 'huge respect' for the beaten Eubank

'I respect Junior a lot because he's a good fighter and he chose the hardest sport to do and he didn't need to,' he says

'Personally, I chose to box but then I thought, "Do I want to go pro and open myself up to abuse for the rest of my life? Nah, i'll do something different"

' But would he ever work with the 29-year-old? 'No because I don't feel like he's in a position to listen

And also my fighter is Groves. If i've chosen to work with George, which I have, and I've built up this relationship, he'd be the last person I'd want to work with

' At only 30, McGuigan has already worked with a host of British talent, including Carl Frampton and David Haye

Alongside his pet bulldog, Titan, the fighters who call his gym home include the brilliant Josh Taylor and Luke Campbell, who won his first fight under McGuigan on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's victory over Alexander Povetkin

'I've got my own methods of training and I try not to contaminate my mind with other people's work

It's almost like you're an artist and you have your way of painting, your method and you have to have full faith and trust in that,' he says

'When you start looking at other people and thinking, "Look at that exercise, I'm going to start doing those," you don't know why they're implementing those methods

You're just free styling. Stay in your lane, do what you're good at and have full faith that you're going to get the most out of your athletes and it's more about understanding them as a whole, as a human being

' This week, all of McGuigan's focus is on Groves, who has overcome a shoulder injury to face Smith

In his last outing the tournament's No 1 seed proved wrong many who felt he was too old, too slow, too battle-worn to cope with the ferocious speed of Eubank

Those doubts have followed the London fighter since his defeats by Carl Froch and Badou Jack

Even after winning the world title in May 2017, many felt Groves was too scarred to reach the very top

'This game is a constant up-and-down wave,' McGuigan says. And on Friday Groves faces the latest crescendo in a career that has undulated more than most

'He had a patch that a lot of fighters wouldn't have been able to overcome,' McGuigan claims

'What makes them go over the hill as it were (is) when they lose that ability to come in the gym and give it their all

When they come in the gym and they're holding back because they're not really in love with it anymore

'I feel like George re-instilled the love for the sport - he hadn't achieved his goals, he'd made lots of money, he'd been one of the one per cent of boxing that's really successful financially but he was in it for all the right reasons

He wanted to become a world champion, it's what he set out to do when he was a kid

' The coach adds: 'He came into the gym with the right mentality to put his wrongs right and he gave me everything - his trust, he opened up to me as a person

'As a trainer you need to learn how to dissect them - find out what makes them tick, find out what their weaknesses are mentally and physically - it's a process and you need a lot of time to get to know these fighters and me and George have been working together for quite a long time now, but I feel like it's probably one of the most successful partnerships I've had because he was in a bad place coming in and now he's a completely changed man

' In the opposite corner in Jeddah will be Smith who, like Groves, has found the route to world honours filled with diversions

More than two years have passed since 'Mundo' won a final eliminator for the WBC title but McGuigan knows the threat he poses

'He's a much better fighter than Eubank,' the trainer admits. 'I feel like the fundamentals of boxing, Eubank didn't get taught - footwork, how to track distance, how to jab his way into distance, moving his head - he kind of just rushed in with wild shots

Top guys are able to diffuse that and hit you hard on the way in, whereas Smith is a lot more seasoned

' He adds: 'I don't know if he's quite as tough as Eubank and I don't think it'll be as physical a fight, it'll be a more technical fight

It's a completely different fight but. it's harder than Eubank.'

Varcoe dedicates AFL grand final to sister - Blog news - Duration: 4:17.

Travis Varcoe will dedicate the AFL grand final to his sister Maggie, hoping she watches over him one last time during a tumultuous September

The Collingwood defender and his family were left devastated when she died on August 31, following a freak football accident in Adelaide

Varcoe has set aside his grief to play important roles in the Magpies' three finals

His fierce physical play will be a major asset on Saturday in the clash with West Coast

The 2009 and 2011 Geelong premiership player has no doubt Maggie is keeping an eye on him

"It's been pretty difficult, obviously Maggie was doing something she loved and in a way it's probably the closest I've felt to her," Varcoe said

"I definitely know she's looking over me and hopefully she does it for one more game

"Without even knowing it she's probably helped me in a lot more ways even though she's passed us physically

" Asked about his decision to keep playing after her death, Varcoe said he and his sister shared the same philosophy - you can't be sad forever

Varcoe playing for his sister on Saturday.Varcoe said the support of his teammates had also been crucial

"You have your family and you can always lean on them for support but they're grieving too - you have another little family here," he said

"To have 45 other blokes willing to do anything for you is a pretty special feeling

I owe them a lot." Varcoe tried to repaid them at Thursday training, reading out a few thoughts that Maggie had written down for her teammates before their ill-fated grand final

"I just wanted to share with them that if you could script it, I would have thought it was meant for me - something she would actually write to me," Varcoe said

Adding to the family theme, Varcoe's four-year-old daughter Frankie was cradled on his lap for Friday's grand final parade

Varcoe played 138 games for Geelong before starting at Collingwood in 2015 - he reached the 200 milestone last month

"I never thought I'd have the opportunity to come back to the big dance - it's been a credit to these boys," he said

"Just being here isn't enough, I don't think. You might as well go all the way."
