Waching daily Sep 29 2018

They faced adversity all season long and true to form the West Coast Eagles overcame it again to snatch an unlikely AFL premiership with a stunning late flourish to banish Collingwood to a five-point grand final defeat

In all, the Eagles led the grand final for just six minutes and it took an incredibly calm finish from Dom Sheed, who poked the ball home from the pocket after marking with less than two minutes to play, to give them the lead that mattered

A desperate, frantic finale followed but the West Coast held on to get home 11.13 (79) - 11

8(74) for a last-gasp premiership win.It was a victory that looked unlikely early after Collingwood shot out of the blocks with a five-goal first quarter that rocked the West Australians

The Magpies' hot start was described as a near perfect quarter of footy, with sentimental favourite Travis Varcoe starring early and 19-year-old Jaidyn Stephenson wreaking havoc up front with two sensational early goals

But the Eagles managed to hold on late in the term, with Willie Rioli and Josh Kennedy scoring majors to cut the defecit to 17 points

Footy fans were hoping for a close encounter and the Eagles started to come to the party with determined and bruising defence in the second term helping them even up the contest

West Coast kept Collingwood off the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes of the term

Defence was the major sticking point for the Eagles and Liam Ryan delivered a heavy bump to Brayden Maynard as momentum began to swing

West Coast then added goals through Mark Hutchings and Luke Shuey to close within two goals at halftime, before turning the burners on in the third

After a slow start to the game, Jack Darling burst to life in the premiership quarter, taking a near impossible mark and then converting from in front of goal to bring the difference back to six points

Magpies runner Alex Woodward got caught up with Stephenson as Taylor Adams tried to pass the ball to him in the back half in a moment that proved decisive

Woodward's block allowed Eagles midfielder Elliott Yeo to intercept the ball and score a running goal to put West Coast up by two points, their first lead since their opening behind of the match

Bruising defence came to the fore again late in the third with timely tackles proving crucial for both teams, as the Eagles and Magpies went in the final break on level terms

Collingwood rediscovered their early dominance to take the initiative early in the last with goals De Goey and Brody Mihocek  but Nathan Vardy hit back for the Eagles to keep it close

Mason Cox then announced himself to the grand final crowd after a quiet match, with a monster mark and goal to boot from outside 50 to extend their lead

The Eagles weren't about to lie down when Josh Kennedy snapped a goal from a standing start to bring the difference back to five

West Coast had their chances throughout the final term, with Liam Ryan, Josh Kennedy and Andrew Masten missing shots at goal which could have proved pivotal

But then in a remarkable sequence of play in the dying minutes, West Coast worked it up the field following marks from three different players

Dom Sheed took an exceptional mark and then converted from an acute angle to give the Eagles a five point lead and the premiership

Luke Shuey was named the Norm Smith Medallist after a remarkable game with 34 disposals, 21 kicks, 8 tackles and one goal

Breaking News - Europe 8-4 USA: Sergio Garcia close to Ryder Cup history in Paris - Duration: 4:24.

Sergio Garcia was left within half a point of becoming Europe's highest scoring Ryder Cup player as the home side moved into a dominant position after Saturday morning's Fourballs

Amid a heady mix of birdies and balls sent flying into the water Thomas Bjorn's team went into a late lunch leading 8-4 after largely subduing America's fightback attempts

Garcia and a revived Rory McIlroy led the way by beating Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka 2&1, with Spaniard left on a career 24

5 Ryder Cup points after a brilliant putt on the seventeenth sealed victory. They were quickly followed by Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton shutting out Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler 3&2 having led all the way from the third point onwards

Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood proved a potent partnership, again defeating Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed

The final score was 4&2 and the Americans never had the lead, with their high octane pair misfiring after they got close just after the turn

It was left to close friends Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth to stem the haemorrhage, clinging on to their lead to beat Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm 2&1 and keep the initial favourites in with a chance of rescuing themselves

Yet the US and its supposed 'frat boy' team spirit was left with a huge amount to do in the afternoon's Foursomes, the format at which they have been weakest in recent editions

The most notable absentee from their line up was Phil Mickelson. It was an electric start from the Europeans, propelled again by the huge spectating bank behind the first tee

In the second match off adrenalin got the better of both Hatton and Fowler, with them powering their balls into the lake, the first of eighteen in all to be lost in the morning

Such was the noise, mixed in with some booing of the Americans, that the starter gave a loud 'shush' into the microphone when the Woods group prepared to tee off

McIlroy was transformed from the hesitant figure of 24 hours earlier, his putter running hot as he reeled off the birdies to build an insurmountable lead from the third hole onwards

The Americans – bizarrely wearing mainly blue while the Europeans were in something closer to red – had no answer

Lower profile but equally effective was Casey on his return to this competition after an absence of ten years

He again led Hatton in building a front nine lead, and when Poulter in the final group birdied the seventh the whole scoreboard was lit up all in blue on one side

Woods was looking sombre and slightly stiff but of equal concern was 'Captain America' Reed, whose natural exuberance seemed to be hindered by the presence of the man beside him

It was not easy for them, however, against Fleetwood and Molinari who looked as made for each other as fish and chips

Given the totemic nature of Woods there was no more important victory than that of the third match, which was sealed by a birdie blitz from the Italian between holes eleven and thirteen which saw the European partnership go from all square after being pegged back to three up

However it was Garcia and McIlroy who put the first point on the board after the Spaniard's 22 foot downhill putt on the seventeenth shut out an excellent comeback from Finau and Koepka, who cut a four hole deficit to just one with two left to play

Casey contributed six of the nine birdies he and Hatton managed as they comfortably held off any challenge

When Fleetwood and Molinari completed their win it meant Europe had clocked up eight straight points

The sequence was only stopped by the intervention of Thomas and Spieth
