Mourinho is under increasing pressure at United after a poor start to the season where the Red Devils have picked up just ten points from the first seven games

They have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship outfit Derby with many calling for Mourinho to leave the club

Former Real Madrid boss Zidane is favourite to replace Mourinho if he does depart with the Frenchman currently without a job

And The Sun claim that Zidane rung Mourinho recently, leaving the former Chelsea manager worried about his Old Trafford career

It's reported that Zidane was concerned that Mourinho may think he was aiming for the job behind his back and wanted to ease those worries

It's believed Zidane, who led Real Madrid to three Champions League titles in a row, told Jose Mourinho that his representatives had asked if he would be interested in the Manchester United job

Following the loss to West Ham on Saturday, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand said executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward must act now

"I think there are some big decisions to be made at Manchester United now," he said on BT Sport

"I think from the hierarchy, from the people who run the club, the likes of Ed Woodward, I'm sure there are going to be conversations at that level about where they go from here

"At the moment there doesn't seem to be that togetherness within that changing room

"The manager, the squad, how they're going to take this club forward. There has to be improvements

"I believe that the powers that be at this football club have a decision to make

"I think you can't let a situation like this just continue through the season. "Things leaking out in the press, little wars going on in the changing rooms that's creeping out and everyone's finding out about it

"So someone's got to make a decision right now, bang - this is what happens."

Following another big weekend of Championship action, Sportsmail's ADAM SHERGOLD looks back and presents the things we learned

When Craig Noone headed home what proved to be Bolton's winner against Derby, he ran to the stands to hug pal Stephen Darby

Former Bolton defender Darby was forced to retire last month after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease

Bolton players walked out with Darby's name and No 23 on their backs and Noone said: 'To see him in the changing room today picked us up

I just ran straight to him, and I can't remember much more about it.' Brentford are three league games without a win after Daniel Bentley gifted Reading both goals in a 2-2 draw

The Bees keeper fumbled John Swift's shot into the path of Jon Dadi Bodvarsson for the first and then fluffed a Swift free-kick for the second

Yoann Barbet spared his blushes with a late equaliser and boss Dean Smith said: 'Daniel will be disappointed with the two mistakes but he has saved us plenty of times before

' You know things aren't going well when the manager wants to haul off all 11 players at half-time

But that was Garry Monk's frank assessment when Birmingham trailed basement-dwellers Ipswich 2-0

'I could have taken them all off at half-time — but I haven't got 11 subs,' he said

Whatever he said in the dressing room must have worked, however, as Lukas Jutkiewicz scored twice to earn a draw

Reach's stunner further illuminated this Yorkshire derby under the Friday-night lights of Hillsborough

From 30 yards, wide on the right, he hit a looping, dipping volley off the inside of the post
