Steven Gerrard has been busy trying to re-build his Rangers side this summer, bringing in 11 players so far

But the Liverpool legend has made it clear he still wants to sign at least one more attacking option

There had been some suggestion Gerrard could look at taking Dominic Solanke on loan, following the arrivals of Ovie Ejaria and Ryan Kent from Liverpool

However, Jurgen Klopp seemed to indicate at the weekend the striker would not be heading north of the border to play at the Ibrox

That hasn't stopped Gerrard from maintaining his interest in bringing in more offensive reinforcements and TeamTalk claim they are the frontrunners to take McCormack on loan

The report states Villa have told the 32-year-old to find a new club before the end of the month and are prepared to pay most of his £40,000-a-week wages

There was an attempt from the Championship side to reach a settlement with McCormack to cancel his contract but that is no longer an option

The attacker is said to prefer staying in Britain and the opportunity to return to the club where he stated his career is a real possibility

Sunderland are also among the sides reportedly keen on McCormack, while there are teams in Turkey monitoring his situation

He failed to make the grade at Rangers when he initially broke through in 2004, playing just 11 games before being sold to Motherwell

But it was in the Championship with Cardiff, Leeds and Fulham where he established himself as a real threat, scoring 116 goals in little over 300 games

It hasn't worked out so well at Villa, although he enjoyed a prolific spell on loan with A-League club Melbourne City last season and could prove a valuable option for Gerrard should Rangers make a move

The Scottish transfer window remains open until August 31 and Gerrard has stated there are two positions he wants to bolster further

"We do feel we're a little bit light up front," he said. "We let Josh Windass go to Wigan so the idea is in the coming weeks to replace those goals

And also at centre-back we're quite light. "We're asking a lot of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson who have been absolutely fantastic for us so far
