Hello, everyone! I'm Thais!
Hey there, and I'm Tom! And today we're gonna talk about how
we began to shoot nudes.
Before we start, I wanted to tell you
HOW NOT TO START SHOOTING NUDES
and that's exactly how we started in nude photography.
How was it? It was really really random. I was living in a shared house
with friends and me and Thais were starting to going out.
No, we were already dating!
We had just started to officially date each other.
We started one week before that.
A friend of mine was there in the house and said: "Let's do some photos?"
"Yeah" "Can it be a nude photoshoot?"
"Yeah" And then I ended up doing the nude shoot.
And dammit, I liked it. I looked at the photos...
Dammit, they look nice, right?!
I was working one day
and when I left the office I was craving a cold beer.
I called Tom and said: "Tom, let's meet at
that bar, you know" And we went to the bar,
sat there and I said: "Hey honey, how are you?"
"Really well, and you?" Bla bla bla
and Tom said out of the blue:
"Hey, what would you think if I eventually photographed a naked woman?
How do you feel about that?"
So I stopped for a while and sat there... thinking.
I was already kind of experienced in photography and I admired the work of some nude photographers
so I thought that was an interesting subject. It wasn't my cup of tea but
I was already familiar with it. So, that was not a super weird
thing. So I finally concluded that I didn't really care about it.
So I told him: "That is cool for me...
I don't have any problem with it. If you want to do it,
I won't be the one to stop you. And then he said:
"Well, I photographed a naked woman today"
She was kind of pissed off.
Not pissed off... I was super angry!
Yeah, she was angry. She was pissed off because
I didn't tell her beforehand. And that's deficiently the wrong way to do it.
Please, don't start like this. If you have a partner, spouse or whatever
HOW NOT TO START IN NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY talk to her before you do it. Before!
Don't start the way I started.
A lot of people ask me: Hey, don't you
VOCÊ NÃO SE IMPORTA? mind that your husband photograph nude people?
No, not at all! First, I also photograph naked people.
Secondly, I believe in nude as an artistic expression. No problem about it
But one important thing is to talk about it first.
Everyone should agree with it.
Talk. It's all it takes.
In nude photography, something that I always hear is:
Hey, can I be your assistant? Hey, can I just watch it? HOW NOT TO MAKE A JOKE
Some people don't get it... Nude photography is not porn!
During the shoots we are worried about posing, lighting, background,
camera settings, model body expression...
We are thinking about so many things that there is no way it
it could become something erotic or sensual. Not at all!
It's not that super fake and staged Playboy making of
with music, people drinking champagne...
There is no glamour!
In our work there is always an insect flying around,
always a jumping spider... So, it's in no way sensual.
At first, when you are starting, you are kind of shy.
There is a naked woman in front of you and the only thing popping in your mind is:
I can't stare at her boobs!
DON'T STARE AT HER BODY I will not look at her boobs.
And then you concentrate.
It's like hipnose. You do everything to not look.
When the model is taking her clothes off, don't look. Take the time to adjust the camera.
Do whatever, but give the model some space.
Look into their eyes. Always keep eye contact.
That is why most of the time, just after the shoot we realize
"Dammit, I didn't know that the model had a belly-button piercing!"
I did a photoshoot and I didn't notice that the model had this big scar.
I only saw it when I was retouching the photos.
And guys, one thing...
Don't get too close to the model.
Always keep a distance. RESPECT THE MODEL'S SPACE
Never, ever, in any case, touch the model.
Even if it is just a messy hair. I don't go there and fix it.
Tell her: "there is a hair there" or a bug, a leaf or whatever.
Ask her to fix it and always keep your distance. And if it's possible,
if the model is shy, ask her to bring a towel or something to cover her in between the shots.
I fell much more comfortable in this situation because I'm a woman.
What do I do? For example, if the model's hair is messy
and I know she can't see it or put it in the way it should be.
First, I always give a warning: "Hey, is ok if I fix
your hair?" And I go there and do my best to not
to touch her body and I just adjust what I told her I was gonna touch. As a woman,
I feel comfortable doing it. And when Tom is with me
he always asks me to do it. He doesn't go there and do it.
So, these are a few small things that we can do to make the model feel more comfortable.
In the end, she is the one in a vulnerable position.
She is the one who's naked. We have our clothes on.
This kind of relation can only exist with lots of trust and respect.
And of course, there are all sorts of models. There are models who are
much more comfortable with nudity. You start to notice it during
the shoot. Other models are shy, so you should respect it.
But sometimes when you're photographing a model will
come close and say: "hey, let me see the photos!". There's no problem with that.
No problem at all being around nudity. Just stay cool and
let the model decide. If she's ok with it, she'll come
closer to you, she will be cool with that.
The model is the one who's gonna show you
the distance that she feels comfortable with. If she is the kind of person who
wants to get closer to you to see the photos, great. If she is the kind of girl
that as soon as you put down the camera, she covers herself... great too!
It is all good, just respect her space.
Other important thing is:
Some people don't like certain parts of their bodies. KNOW YOUR MODEL'S INSECURITIES
You don't need to be direct, but you can start to talk to her and you will
realize if she doesn't like some part of her body or if she feels insecure about
something. Find an angle that will hide or at least not
emphasize it. Try to work around it.
And don't ever simply say: "hey, what don't you like about your body?"
She will just be uncomfortable and freeze right there.
Try to schedule a meeting or just chat before the shoot.
You can try try to meet a little before the shoot to get to know one another better.
And you can talk on the whole way to the location
just to break the ice. When you get to your location the model will be much more comfortable.
We have different approaches during the shoot
and this is something good to talk about: when I'm taking the photos
I like to show some of them to the model. SHOW SOME PHOTOS TO THE MODEL
Why? Because it helps her to understand
what I'm seeing. Helps her to see that
she is beautiful, the scene is beautiful and all. Even though the final result
will be totally different, as I retouch my photos a lot,
I think this gives a confidence boost to the model.
If the model asks me of course I'll show, but I don't like to voluntary show the photos.
But I always express how excited with the photos I am. ENCOURAGE THE MODEL AND SAY GOOD THINGS
"Wow, that is awesome! It looks so beautiful! The light is amazing!". Always focusing on the photos.
That the photo is incredible, the pose is great...
I always praise the scene, and all.
Just don't try to praise the model by saying: DON'T TALK ABOUT THE MODEL'S BODY
"You are hot as fuck!"
Avoid talking about her breast or butt or any part of the body.
Just focus on art itself.
And regards to companion. MODEL'S COMPANION
I usually shoot with Thais. It's always good to have another woman around
so the model feels more comfortable. But if Thais can't go, I tell the model:
"Bring a friend who you trust, who you're comfortable with..."
Even the mom! We did a shoot and the model's mom was there and it was amazing!
The mother loved the photos, she was super excited!
So always bring someone you trust, preferably a female friend.
I also did a photoshoot with a girl and she brought a male friend along
and it was great. And have also shot with boyfriends around.
Yeah, more than once!
More than once, and it was great.
He was close to start clapping, always cheering her: "That's it! That is super!"
It is pretty awesome, but it is hard. Normally the woman doesn't feel comfortable
doing it with the boyfriend around
It's because you have to take away the jealous factor of the move. What gets uncomfortable sometimes is:
You are posing for the photographer, you are doing a nude job and you are thinking
if the boyfriend is thinking that you are seducing the photographer
or anything like that. So when you take the "jealous part", the shoots flows
wonderfully. So that's why it's a bit delicate when you go
with your partner to the photoshoot
As soon as we began to publicize the work began to appear a lot of people interested.
HOW WE FOUND THE FIRST MODELS TO BUILD OUR PORTFOLIOS
So it was very natural for us to engage in nude photography.
When first models were photographed and start talking to their friends, lots of interested people showed up.
And our nude photography started to spread like a virus in our hometown (Manaus).
This was really cool because it was word of mouth and
a lot of people started to come to us for photoshoots. It was great!
So it was like that. We were photographing lots of people and our only requirement
was for us to be able to publish and share them.
At first it was all trial and error. We didn't know what poses worked better,
we were not familiar specific retouching techniques for
portraits yet, we didn't use model releases,
we had nothing like that. At the beginning everything was
really amateurish and we began to grow from the experience.
HOW WE PROFESSIONALIZED OUR PHOTOGRAPHY
Eventually, we started to professionalize the business. We started to take
paid shoots, we started using model releases,
doing everything by the book and today
we have a totally new system.
It began like this, word of mouth.
One did it and like it and told her friends, but I was all done in an amateurish way.
Nowadays we treat it more seriously, we sign contracts and everything.
And some issues that we had with nude photography...
BAD EXPERIENCES
Once, some relatives of the model called and threatened me for taking her photos.
Once we photographed a model for free as part of our personal project
and three months later she started dating someone and the guy didn't like the photos and pressured her,
so we had to remove the photos without any compensation because
we didn't have any contract.
Few months later she told me: We broke up and now you can use the photos again.
There were a few issues, but in general
it's really rewarding. We just have to keep an open mind
and keep everything professional. It is pretty chill.
One good thing is that
THE GOOD PART
after all these photoshoots
we developed great relations of friendship with most models.
Of course, once we've seen someone naked we tend to develop a certain intimacy.
And the shoots are always very fun, we are always
laughing a lot, the models always have a lot of stories
to tell, it's great. They're always great experiences.
And it's nice too for model because she ends up discovering herself,
ends up looking at herself in a way that she not seen before.
It's very rewarding!
So, that is all! This was just an introduction on
how we started our nude photography path. We will
make more specific videos about our shooting and retouching techniques.
That is it, folks! See ya!
