Hello, little scientists, I am Professor Bill Tyson and together we are going to know different
forms of science.
We have already talked about the Cardiovascular System and today we will understand a little better how
your tubing works, which are the blood vessels.
Blood vessels usually consist of three layers, called tunics.
The inner tunic is the innermost layer.
The middle tunica consists of smooth muscle cells and elastic tissue.
And finally we have the adventitial tunica, which is the outermost layer.
But since we have different functions, the blood vessels vary widely.
The arteries are the vessels that leave the heart, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the
whole body.
In the larger arteries, the middle tunic is much thicker and rich in elastic fibers.
As the arteries branch off, they become thinner and become
arterioles.
The veins, which are not as thick as the arteries, have as their main function
to carry the venous blood, filled with carbon dioxide, back to the heart, so
that the blood can be pumped again and receive oxygen.
We have, finally, the blood vessels called capillaries, which are extremely fine and have
neither the middle tunica nor the adventitia.
The name capillary is used because the structure is so thin that it looks more like a hair.
And because they are so thin it is much easier to make the exchange of gases, distributing
the oxygen and collecting the carbon dioxide.
To supply so many cells you need good piping.
