Road signs suck. What if we got rid of them all? - Duration: 6:26.

If I showed you two big intersections — one with a bunch of signs, traffic lights, and

boundaries, and one with no markings or apparent rules at all — which one would look safer

to you?

Towns all over Europe are starting to experiment with streets like this: where cars, bikes,

buses, and people can travel freely in the same space.

I think this looks like an accident waiting to happen.

But I know someone who would know a lot more about this than I do.

I'm Roman Mars from 99 Percent Invisible.

And that's what urban planners often refer to as a "shared space" design strategy.

It seems counterintuitive, but there's evidence that getting rid of all signs and barriers

might make our streets a lot safer.

So — how does it work?

There's a spot in Google street view where you can witness a town undergoing this exact

transformation.

This is Poynton, England — about 20 minutes away from Manchester.

Here's the city center in May 2011: there's a mess of signs and lights, a few small sidewalks,

and some haphazard guardrails to keep pedestrians safe.

And here it is in July 2015.

Traffic lights, road signs, curbs — all gone.

"Something very strange is happening on the streets of Britain — I don't know

if you've noticed, but in some places, pavements and roads have been blurring into one with

cars, buses, and pedestrians all sharing the same space."

The town spent 4 million pounds to expand sidewalk space and strip the city center of

traditional demarcations.

Now, the only marker left is this little sign: Poynton shared space village.

The concept is that the absence of separation will make everyone more cautious — so commuters

slow down, make eye contact, and negotiate.

Watch what happens when a boy in Poynton is encouraged to cross the street without waiting

for the cars to clear the intersection.

Because cars don't spend time waiting at traffic lights, it takes less time on average

for them to get through the crossing.

Even when bikers and pedestrians are absent, cars drive slow due to a concept called "edge

friction."

It's the idea that nearby vertical elements in a driver's peripheral vision — like

trees or lamps, create a visual cue for how fast they're going.

On a highway, those are often totally absent, so the sidelines blur.

In a shared space, those lines play an important mental trick to slow down drivers.

In theory, shared space works well for pedestrians, allowing them to follow their desired path

while walking.

Instead of being limited to a strict path, they can walk exactly in the direction they

want to go.

n In practice, that doesn't always seem to

be the case.

Video footage of a shared space at Elwick Square in Ashford, England shows that pedestrians'

mostly still stick to crosswalks, or where a crosswalk would be.

That's largely because these layouts are stressful: The majority of a survey group

asked about crossing Elwick Square reported feeling anxious about it.

And those pedestrians frequently report that they prefer things the way they used to be.

But the "way things used to be" is relative.

If you look at old footage of city streets in the early 1900s, cars mixed freely with

pedestrians, bicyclists, and streetcars.

Vehicles couldn't go very fast back then, so there wasn't a huge concern about separating

them from walkers and bikers.

With plenty of city streets, that's still the case without any intentional urban planning.

But the big question is whether these deliberately stripped-down designs actually make people

safer.

It seems that in many cases, they do.

For one thing, we know that the number of accidents drops after shared spaces are installed.

In Ipswich, rates of accidents involving injuries fell from 23 over three years to just one

per year.

In London's Kensington High Street, the number of pedestrians injured dropped by nearly

60 percent.

And in Drachten in the Netherlands, accidents at one intersection fell from 36 in four years

to two in two years.

We also know that shared spaces are quantifiably more free-flowing based on analysis of traffic

conflicts.

With video footage like this from Exhibition Road in London, analysts can rate the severity

of a traffic conflict based on participants' speed and change of course.

Before the shared space renovation, one pedestrian had to step back onto the sidewalk to avoid

a departing car.

Another broke out into a sprint to avoid getting hit by an oncoming van.

After the shared space installation, traffic conflicts were less frequent and less severe on

average — like this, where pedestrians wait for a cab to cross before continuing.

Or this one, where a cyclist changes course to avoid pedestrians.

But that doesn't mean these designs work for everyone.

"I think it's the most ludicrous idea I've ever heard.

What about blind people?

Children?"

From the beginning, shared space designs have been under fire for providing insufficient

protections for disabled pedestrians, especially the visually impaired.

"The family of a pensioner who died a month after being hit by a bus have called for traffic

lights to be reinstalled at the junction."

"Traffic lights here were recently removed to make way for a so-called shared space, but it's

a move that has angered David's family"

"I'm sure if the traffic lights were there,

this wouldn't have happened"

A 2015 House of Lords report called for a temporary ban on shared space designs.

And in August 2016 a select committee of the House of Commons launched an inquiry into

the accessibility of such environments.

Their final report in April 2017 asked the government to put all shared space schemes

on hold until they improved the process of consulting disabled communities.

Preliminary designs like these by the Danish Building Research Institute give us an idea

of what that balance might look like.

They include both the mixed traffic of shared space and the raised street textures and button-activated

crosswalks that disabled users are used to.

Shared spaces can be effective, but for this kind of plan to work across communities, it

will require a lot more research to determine what will work in different places and what will serve

the needs of all the people sharing the streets.

BREAKING NEWS From President Trump – It's BRUTAL - Duration: 7:12.

BREAKING NEWS From President Trump Its BRUTAL

President Trump is absolutely disgusted with the disrespectful, over-paid NFL kneelers.

On Friday night, Trump railed against them and gaveem a good piece of his mind at

a rally in Huntsville, Alabama.

Fox News reports Trump said that he and Sen. Luther Strange , who he was rallying

for in Huntsville, are unified by great American values. Were proud of our

country and were proud of our flag, Trump said.

He continued on saying that players who disrespect the flag and kneel for the national anthem

should be ejected from the stadium and cut from the team.Wouldnt you love to see

one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say get that son of a b****

off the field right now HES FIRED, Trump said.

Some owner is going to do that, he said.rump said players shows of disrespect are the

main reason behind a decline in NFL ratings.

He also mentioned that the game has grown more litigious, with hard hits and other recurring

incidents during a game now being penalized more often.

Trump riffed on a referee from last weekend, saying his wife was likely proud to see him

on television so often as he penalized such tackles.

Theyre ruining the game, he said of anthem-kneeling players and overly litigious

officiating standards.

Of course, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell didnt waste any time adding his two cents.

On Saturday morning, he released a statement calling Trumps remarks divisive. The

statement read, Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect

for our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming

force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities. Well that about figures

hed come out with a garbage statement like that. Now we know, nothing is going to be

done about any of this and its only going to continue.

During the 2016 NFL season, Colin Kaepernick (then-San Francisco 49ers QB) decided to

do the unthinkable and kneel during the National Anthem. Americas Freedom Fighters previously

reported on this story last year. The act of kneeling or sitting during the National

Anthem quickly became a trend across the NFL with many other players following suit. Colin

Kaepernick claims he was kneeling in protest of police brutailty and racial inequality.

Poor Colin, he had it so rough making millions but now he is currently a free agent without

a team interest in sight. Thats good, karma at its finest!

Most people have forgotten that the NFL has a history of disrepect towards our Country

and Armed Forces. On Nov 4th, 2015, Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake released results

of a report questioning a Pentagon program that doles out millions of dollars to professional

sports.

Richard Sisk of Military.com reported Many of those heart-rending tributes to the troops

at ballparks and football stadiums came with a pricetag to the Defense Department for well-planned

public relations efforts to boost recruiting and funding to the military, two senators

charged Wednesday.

Americans deserve the ability to assume that tributes for our men and women in military

uniform are genuine displays of national pride, which many are, rather than taxpayer-funded

DOD marketing gimmicks, Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, both Republicans of Arizona.,

wrote in a report on the practice.

In a 150-page report titled Tackling Paid Patriotism, McCain, chairman of the Senate

Armed Services Committee, and Flake, a member of the Appropriations Committee, cited numerous

instances of the military paying for tributes at professional and college sports events.

The report began by citing a 2013 Atlanta Falcons pro football game at which 80 National

Guard members unfurled a huge U.S. flag on the field of the Georgia Dome.

Little did those fans or millions of other Americans know that the National

Guard had actually paid the Atlanta Falcons for this display of patriotism as part of

a $315,000 marketing contract, the report said.

Other instances of paid patriotism cited in the report included:

$49,000 to the Milwaukee Brewers for the Wisconsin Army National Guard to sponsor each Sunday

performance of God Bless America during home games with announcement and logo recognition

on the video board. $1,509 for the LA Galaxy (soccer) to provide

pre-game recognition of five high ranking officers of the Air Force and 100 general

admission tickets to that game. $20,000 to the New York Jets to recognize

one-to-two New Jersey Army National Guard soldiers as hometown heroes at each home game

on the videoboard and Coaches Club access for the recognized soldier(s) and three guests.

The report also cited instances where the military appeared to be engaged in activities

unrelated to marketing and was simply buying tickets and access in what the two senators

charged were taxpayer-funded boondoggles aimed at securing VIP perks:

The Air Force paid the Cincinnati Bengals nearly $5,000 for 60 club-level tickets.

The National Guard paid the Indianapolis Colts for use of a luxury suite, autographed items,

pre-game field visits and cheerleader appearances. The National Guard paid the Boston Bruins

for a luxury box for 18 people and an executive view suite for 25 people on military appreciation

night. In fact, these displays of paid patriotism

are included within the $6.8 million that the Department of Defense (DOD) has spent

on sports marketing contracts since Fiscal Year 2012, the report said.

While many professional sporting teams do include patriotic events as a pure display

of national pride, this report highlights far too many instances when that is simply

not the case, the report said. McCain and Flake called on pro sports teams which accepted

DOD money for questionable events to donate sums in that total to worthy causes supporting

troops and veterans.

Numerous critics have pointed to patriotic displays at sporting events as a sign of the

growing rift in American society, often cited by the military itself, between civilians

and the so-called one percent who serve in uniform.

Ratings and Attendance are down nationwide for the NFL and its only projected to get

worse from here on out. We The People are pissed off at what we are seeing with these

over-paid, wimps who have it so rough making millions per year! Its all BS and like

President Trump has said, NFL owners should FIRE any player who disrespects our Flag and

Country YOURE FIRED!

God Bless.

Voa News November 29, 2017 - Duration: 4:59.

From Washington, this is VOA news.

I'm Richard Sheehe reporting.

North Korea has fired another ballistic missile.

That's according to the South Korean military joint chiefs of staff and verified by the

U.S. as well.

The missile reportedly flew eastward from South Pyongan province and South Korean military

and U.S. are still analyzing the trajectory.

The launch is the first since September 15 when North Korea fired an intermediate ballistic

missile.

France's president is in the middle of a trip to West Africa.

We get details from Bram Posthumus in Ouagadougou.

President Emmanuel Macron spent three hours on Tuesday at the University of Ouagadougou,

discussing migration, climate change and terrorism.

He is the first French president in three decades to visit Burkina Faso.

Security was a key concern during Macro's visit.

Police and army patrolled around all the main arteries, including the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue,

scene of two major terrorist attacks in the past.

Macron will head to Ivory Coast on Wednesday for a European Union-African Union summit

expected to address migration.

The French president will then wrap up his trip to the region Thursday in Ghana.

Bram Posthumus, for VOA news, Ouagadougou.

The U.S. military says it has carried out an airstrike against the Islamic State group

in northeastern Somalia that killed one extremist.

A statement from the U.S. Africa Command says the airstrike was carried out Monday afternoon

in coordination with Somalia's government.

The United States statement called a small but growing presence the issue (of )the Islamic

State group in Somalia.

The Trump administration earlier this year approved expanded military efforts against

extremists in the Horn of Africa nation, primarily the homegrown and al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab.

Many Islamic State group fighters are said to number around 200 in the region.

This is VOA news.

Forgiveness or retribution.

That's the choice as Zimbabwe moves forward after nearly four decades of chaotic rule

under Robert Mugabe.

So says Anita Powell in this report from Harare.

For 37 years, Zimbabwe has been battered by human rights abuses, endemic corruption, and

mismanagement that sank the economy and reduced the nation's once-strong agricultural sector

to ruins.

The nation's new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, sees only one way forward for his wounded

nation: forgiveness.

"I thus humbly appeal to all of us that we let bygones be bygones."

But just a day later, the state jailed former Mugabe-era minister Ignatius Chombo on massive

corruption charges.

He is one of several Mugabe cronies to face what some critics are saying is political

retribution, not true justice.

Anita Powell, VOA news, Harare.

Kenya's new leader has been sworn in.

We get details from Jill Craig.

Actually, U.S. prosecutors have charged three Chinese nationals linked to a cyber security

company in China with hacking into the systems of three companies to steal business secrets.

Soo Song is acting U.S. attorney in Pittsburgh.

"The cyberattacks resulted in the theft of internal financial analytical communications

from Moody's Analytics, the theft of user names and passwords as well as approximately

407 gigabytes of data from Siemens, and the January, 2016, theft of global positioning

technology that was under development at Trimble Corporation."

Victoria state police in Australia have arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of planning to

use an automatic rifle for a mass shooting on New Year's Eve in Melbourne.

Shane Patton is the police deputy commissioner.

"The male is one of our high risks persons of interest, we have been monitoring him for

a very lengthy period of time.

He is an Australian citizen and he is of Somalian parents."

The police said the man was intending to act alone and not yet acquired the firearm.

In 2014, a lone gunman took nearly 20 hostages in a Sydney cafe in a 16-hour standoff with

police before being killed.

Two hostages also died in that attack.

Myanmar's state councilor Aung San Suu Kyi in talks with Pope Francis Tuesday acknowledged

an erosion of trust and understanding among communities in Rakhine state but declined

to mention Rohingya Muslims, who have fled security crackdown there.

A shutdown in Bali's airport continues thanks to ongoing hazard from the volcanic ash.

Airlines bracing for millions of dollars of loss revenue per day are scrambling to minimize

damage by offering travel to other destinations.

It happened after an eruption of Mount Agung volcano.

F1 news: Lewis Hamilton planning for RETIREMENT from racing

The Mercedes man secured his fourth world title in 2017, making him the most successful driver in British history. Hamilton is about to land a huge new contract as a reward for his years of dominance on the track.

But the 32-year-old could have not much longer in F1 racing - after revealing he's started putting plans in place for his retirement.

Im really starting to focus on the future as my time comes to an end in F1, putting things in place for that part of my future," he said.

"Im really starting to focus on the future as my time comes to an end in F1, putting things in place for that part of my future" Lewis Hamilton Ive currently got another year with the team and I do want to continue (after that), but Im at that point where theres that question.

You cant come back to F1. Whatever happens, you are gonna miss it. If its next year, if its five years from now, youre gonna miss it when you finish. Theres a saying you stay as long as you can.

Im not quite sure about that exactly but there is a lot of life left beyond it. Things that Ive missed in life.

I was talking to my best friend the other day about things that I do envy or look forward to, like living in one place, getting a routine: Thats my gym, I have game night with my friends here. My family.

Each year I stay in the sport, I delay those things. But from 40 onwards theres so much time for it.

But… my auntie died from cancer and on her last day she said: Ive worked every day with the plan of stopping one day and doing all these different things. Then I ran out of time..

So Im battling with that in my mind. I do live my life day by day and try to live it to the maximum.

Thats what Im fighting with - I want to keep racing but there are these other things I want to do. I want my cake and I want to eat it.

I just want to make sure I choose the right time, but I think I will..
