follow me as I visit one of the
northernmost Mesoamerican pyramids in
mexico and one of the best-kept
archaeological secrets
this is Cañada de la Virgen, canyon
of the Virgin this archaeological site
is perched on a small mesa surrounded by
canyons about 25 kilometres west of San
Miguel de Allende.
This is the pyramid in front of you. You can you see that there is some
patio in front of it and four platforms. There are four rooms in each platform, yes. So we
have 12 rooms plus the one at the
top, 13. It will be the number that will
close to the cycle and begins the cycle.
Well we think it's related with the moon and solar cycles.
There's one solar cycle, we have 13 moons.
Main pyramid, usually the circular temples were dedicated to
the Feathered Serpent as a windgod
And then to the south, we have this other pyramids
but you can see the pyramid is in the southwest
corner, a sunken patio.
The grass and the water pump, yes. That's the typical grass
of the area, red grass. And that red grass is still used for the typical roof of the rural houses.
Sun rising of the 4 of March and 10 of October
exactly the two dates that the sun sets on top of the pyramid.
We're at the Cañada de la Virgen pyramid complex
in what city? San Miguel de Allende.
San Miguel, Mexico
patio on this side over here.
Archaeologist found the burial site over there of a warrior.
A man 30- 35 years. He was surrounded by vases full of food and drinks
yes he was decapitated, and his head was looking to the North. Why the North? Because at that point the sun returns.
Why the North? Because at that point the sun returns.
these pre Aztec pyramid were occupied
by the Otomi people in 540 - 1050 AD
the site served as a ceremonial space
elite residences and burial grounds
with timekeeping instruments aligned to
the movement of celestial bodies.
This pyramid is built like Russian dolls, it's a
pyramid on top of the pyramid
unlike other pyramids such Chichen Itza, this one is located on private
property so we had to visit by booking a
tour through Coyote Canyon adventures
this pyramid is a best-kept secret
because it was first excavated in 2002
and only recently opened to the public
in 2011
the site was named after a geode found
in this Canyon which one opened
resembled the Virgin Mary here you can
take hiking and horseback riding tours
through this beautiful Canyon while
visiting the pyramids we met Rossana Quiroz
who holds the doctoral thesis in
archeo-astronomy and studied the lunar
solar calendar of the Otomi people. She
did much of the research surrounding
this archaeological site. We also visited
the museum of pre-hispanic astronomy
located just outside of the site which
explores the cycle of the Moon and Sun in
relation to the pyramid
the museum also has a community
restaurant which they made a delicious
meal of spoes, molcajete and blue corn
tortilla is all homemade and delicioso.
we hope that you enjoyed this tour of
Cañada de la Virgen and huge shout-out to
