Well, in addition to offering you language learning tips here on my channel,
I'm also constantly learning or improving the languages I already speak,
so I'm always paying attention to what's working for me, so I can
pass it on to you. So today, I'll give you 3 new tips, in fact, the
first two are new in the sense that I've never seen anyone talking about them,
and the last tip, I've already seen people talking about it, but I've never talked
about it here on my channel, so it's new on my channel. So all three are new one
way or another and I hope you like them. In this video, I'll focus on English, but
in fact, these tips work for any language you might be learning.
One of the most important things when you're learning a language, or when you're
learning any other skill, is to feel that you're progressing and, in the case of a language,
especially to feel that you're getting better at understanding what people are saying in that language.
And one of the most gratifying things in the world comes when you're studying a language
and you're able to understand what people are saying. But in many cases, native
speakers speak too fast, so if you feel like you're not able to
understand spoken English because they speak too fast, my advice is for you to listen to
or watch political speeches on YouTube. But then, you'll say: "gosh, that's
boring! Watching a politician speak?" Yes, it can be a little boring, but it's gratifying at
the same time. Why? Because politicians usually have a prepared speech, right? So
their grammar is almost perfect and besides that, they speak slowly, so
it's way easier to understand a politician speaking than a native speaker speaking
informally. In addition, another fascinating thing about watching political speeches is that you undestand
a little bit about the problems and issues that that country
has been dealing with at the moment, so it's a great way not only to practice the language, but
also to get to know a little bit more about the culture of that country.
"It has been the privilege of my life to serve as your President and as I prepare to take
on the even more important role of citizen, know that I will be there with you every step
of the way to ensure that this country forever strives to live up to the incredible promise
of our founding---that all of us are created equal, and all of us deserve every chance
to live out our dreams."
Well, if you didn't like the first tip,
you thought it was boring and you don't like watching political speeches, I think
you'll like this second tip because it's more pleasant and it's a relief,
which is watching interviews with your idols. So, for instance, if there's a person you
really like, you really admire, it can be a singer, it can be an actor, it can be
anyone you really admire, you search on YouTube "so-and-so
interview" and then you'll see the interviews, many interviews that that person has given.
And it's an enjoyable thing to do because you already admire that person, so
it's not something like "oh, I have to do this," it's pleasurable
and it's fascinating to see our idols giving interviews outside work, so you
learn more about that person, about her ideas, about her creative process,
so it's fascinating. The only thing which is not very nice is that sometimes you
love the person's work and when you watch her interview, you see that
the person is not that interesting as a person, you know? Her work is way
cooler or the opposite, right? Sometimes you already like that person's work
and you find out that she is in fact a really interesting person, outside work,
you know? So this is my second tip.
"My musical influences have stayed the same
for a long time. I really like Nirvana, I love Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Bob Dylan, and,
you know, like Eminem...I like all the greats from every genre, just the masters of every genre."
The third tip which I think is really, really
important is to have a very specific goal for learning a language.
Because you may have written for your 2017 goals: learn English. Ok, but
learn English...which level do you want to achieve? Do you want to achieve the intermediate level?
Do you want to achieve the advanced level? And I think a very good way to set
this goal is to schedule a proficiency test. So in the case of English, there's the TOEFL,
there's the Cambridge exam, so, for instance, if you want to achieve the intermediate level
by December 2017, what do you do? You schedule a Cambridge exam, intermediate level,
for December 2017, so you'll have that specific goal, and that helps a lot
and also because these exams are not very cheap, you'll be spending
money on it, and that will help a lot because everything that involves money motive us
even more because we are loss averse, so you won't want to waste
all that money by not passing the test, right? So you''l be way more motivated
to really achieve that goal and that will guide you and...it's proved, the more
specific the goal, the easier it is to achieve it, right? When you have a broad goal,
like learn English, you can work on it forever.
Well guys, those were my 3 new tips of today, I hope you have
like it and I hope you put them into practice because they really, really, really help
learning a language. And as usual, if you liked the video, leave a thumbs-up,
a comment, share the video with your friends who are also learning
English or learning another language. And thank you very much for watching this video
and I'll see you next week.
Kisses! :)
