Hi, Clément here
Today we will study a new song and it will be Honeysuckle Rose
So, it's a piece in F
which is rather simple, there isn't a lot of chords
and it's played a lot in gypsy jazz
So I'll start off by playing it
and then I will explain how you can improvise
on the different parts of this piece
So in this song the part A will be Gm, C7
on 4 measures and then F
So in fact for Gm, C7 to simplify things we can just think of C7
So I personally play a C7 with a ninth
So this chord, so if you can't play this type of position
You can watch the video I made on complicated chords
You can click on the 'i' for info which is displayed in the top right corner of the video
I wrote an article on how to play the chord positions
a bit more complicated that we can find in gypsy jazz
So on the C7, you could use the regular C7 arpeggio
It works very well
You can also the rules of the diatonic substitution, so if you don't know what that is, I send you back
on the 'i' for info in the top right corner of the video
I wrote an article on diatonic substitution in which I explain how it works
And so C7 is the fifth degree of the F key
We thus can substitute it with the fifth degree
which is Em7b5 or E half diminished
So on the C7 you could play a Em7b5 arpeggio
You can also use diminished arpeggios
I made a video on diminished arpeggios as well, you can click on the 'i' in the top right corner of the video
You can also use tritone substitution
So on the C7 or here, it'll be a F#7
I made also an article on the tritone substitution in the top right corner
So that's for the arpeggio relative to C7
If you want to think in terms of scales
As we are in F, you can simply use the F scale
So, here the regular F scale
and it's already many things
Then next we have F
So you can use the regular arpeggio, so the triad, root note, third, fifth, you can also add a sixth, seventh or ninth
You can also use the rules of the diatonic substitution
So on F, you could play a Am arpeggio or a Dm arpeggio, it'll work very well
There it is F, and you could also use the F scale
So that's for part A, then for part B
it'll change of key, we will have a II V I in Bb
So Cm, F7, Bb
You could also just think of F7 and Bb, to simplify it, it works as well
So, at this point it is as if we changed to the Bb key
so, in terms of scale we could use the Bb scale on the F7
In terms of arpeggio, you could use the regular F7 arpeggio
The diminished arpeggio
The tritone substitution, so the B7
And then we arrive on the Bb
so, here it's like we were on the first degree
So you can think of the Bb scale
You could think of the tritone substitution, so either a Dm
on the Bb or a Gm
So there you have it for the Bb
Then there is a G7
So, earlier when I played the song, I did this diagram
Maybe you wonder, so I'll show you
In fact I play a barre chord with the middle finger
on the 5th frets / A, D strings
index finger, 4th fret / G string
and the small finger 6th fret / B string
you can also add the thumb on top of it
So that's the diagram
you can also do it more simply like that
So on G7 we can think of the G7 arpeggio
We can think of the diminished arpeggio
we could think of the tritone substitution, so Db7
In terms of scale we could think of it as the fifth degree of the C key
So we could play the C scale
There you have it for the G7
then we go back to the C7
So you could play exactly the same thing
as I explained on the C7 in part A
So either, D7 arpeggio or the diminished arpeggio, diatonic, tritone substitution, etc.
So there you have it for this song
It's relatively simple, there is almost no change of key and not a lot of chords
So it's a rather nice piece if you starting off with the guitar
in which there is not a lot of difficulties
So there you have it for this study, you can download the recapitulative PDF
on the article, so if you're on the website it's right at the end of it
