#MAGA: Sanctuary County Cries Uncle, Goes After Illegals Before Trump Takes Over.
President-elect Donald Trump has made it clear that he intends to strip federal funding from
jurisdictions that act as sanctuary cities or counties i.e., ones that protect
illegal immigrants from deportation.
Now, that policy change has scared one county enough that theyve preemptively reversed
its decision to act as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, according to New York Newsday.
Suffolk County, New York, hasnt held inmates wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement
since 2014, according to Long Island Business News.
Sheriff Vincent DeMarco planned to change that; the Long Island county will no longer
require a judges order before turning wanted inmates over to ICE.
I do believe this is good public policy because it focuses on criminals, DeMarco
said, according to Breitbart.
Were talking about people who entered the country illegally and have committed crimes
and have been convicted of crimes.
The new regulations will place a 48-hour detainer on all inmates wanted by ICE.
I opposed open-ended detainer requests because, among other things, they placed an
enormous burden on local government to spend millions on incarceration to cover unfunded
mandates, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone told Newsday.
However, Suffolk County works closely with federal law enforcement, and a limited, 48-hour
detainer represents a step in the right direction.
While both insisted they were ending the sanctuary policy out of purely criminal concerns, there
were some doubters.
I mean, lets face it a new administration is coming in and the new administration has
said, unambiguously, theyre going to take an entirely different and harder approach
toward sanctuaries, said Dan Cadman of the Center for Immigration Studies.
I dont think that many counties and many county sheriffs and some police departments
want to be between the hammer and the anvil.
So, even before he takes office, Donald Trump has already had a major practical effect.
Way to go, Mr. President-elect!
