Breaking News - 'I don't mind dying poor': Fabio Coentrao on quitting Real Madrid - Duration: 2:06.

Fabio Coentrao has revealed he forfeited 'a lot of money' by cancelling his contract with Real Madrid, but says happiness will always be more important to him than his bank balance

The 30-year-old had one year left on his deal at the Bernabeu but agreed to leave without compensation after it became clear he had no future with the Spanish club

Coentrao could have boosted his coffers significantly by simply refusing to leave Real Madrid, but he instead chose to agree to a termination in order to remain in Portugal

Having originally hoped to sign for Sporting Lisbon, who he played for last season on loan, he eventually joined hometown club Rio Ave on transfer deadline day and said he had no regrets over his decision

'I waited until the 31st for a call from [Sporting], to which I gave everything I had last year, and I got zero calls,' Coentrao told Record

'It's sad.' 'After that, I thought I needed to be happy and I lost a lot of money to get that happiness at [Rio Ave], a club that has always acted well and faithful to me

There is no money that can pay for happiness. I was born poor. I don't mind dying poor

' Coetrao made 25 appearances for Sporting Lisbon last season, the most he has managed since 2009-10

He asked to be excused from Portugal's provisional World Cup squad in May after claiming the campaign had left him exhausted

The left back was a Real Madrid player for seven years but managed just 58 La Liga appearances and in March said he had forgotten how to play football due to a lack of opportunities

His return to Rio Ave will be an emotional one. He came through the ranks at the club before leaving for Benfica in 2007
