What do you call a very fast zombie?
A zoooooombie!
I'm so lucky you can't slap me through the monitor.
Hi people!
Today is...
My birthday! You'll see this video on a Wednesday-Thursday, but my birthday
was on Tuesday 28. Before starting with the books, I'll show you the presents.
You might like a few. Okay, let's begin... They gave me
a small plate (pocket-emptier, it's called) of Hufflepuff, my favorite
house in Harry Potter. I was also given brush earrings; those of you who've
watched this channel for a while know I'm crazy about brush-jewellery, so
as soon as I wear something red I'll use them. I also got this illustrated book
by Benjamin Lacombe, Madama Butterfly. Finally I'll
know the story of Madama Butterfly, because it's still a mystery to me.
And this was my boyfriend's present, this collector's edition
of Skyrim. "The library of Skyrim: History,
Man, Mer and Beast; and The Arcane." You can open this box like this,
and inside are the books. Can you see them peeking out? I won't take them out
because I'd make a mess right now. I'll read them to know Skyrim's lore better,
since I play the game (with a lot of mods) and I'm enjoying it a lot.
I play a very pretty dunmer. And look at these slippers!
They're Hogwarts owls, but as stuffed slippers! I love them,
look at their cute little wings. And along with this tiara, those were
my birthday presents. Well, my mother gave me a bikini, but that
I won't show you because it's a bit porn-y. Birthdays aside (jeez, one year less
to my death), today we came to talk about zombies,
a genre I really like and want to share with you.
So let's make a quick list of my recommended zombie books. We'll start
with ZOMBIE ISLAND by David Wellington. This is the first part
of a trilogy (I don't know if there are more installments): ZOMBIE ISLAND, then
comes ZOMBIE NATION, and then ZOMBIE PLANET.
Though in internet, I don't know why, they're also referred to as MONSTER ISLAND,
MONSTER NATION, and MONSTER PLANET. It's about a guy from the UN,
if I recall correctly... Yes, a former United Nations' Inspector of Armament who travels
with a group of soldier schoolgirls, trying to survive, while they search for
a "medicine they need desperately," and there's also a guy,
a Medicine student who's trying to turn himself into a conscious zombie
and adapt to his new nature. Next: the trilogy of APOCALYPSE Z
by Manel Loureiro, aka "Zombies in Galicia." This one here is the second book;
I read the first one on kindle, and I liked it so much that I decided to
buy the next two on paperback. This is a very cool trilogy (also in English!)
In fact, these novels were pioneer in bringing Zombie literature back
to the surface here in Spain. The first book is written
as a diary on computers and notebooks, telling the story of a Galician man
who witness the unraveling of the Zombie Apocalypse and tries to get out. The second book
takes place in the Canary Islands, and the third one, if I remember correctly,
happens in America. Things escalate, the stakes get higher, and,
as the trilogy moves forward, it gets way cooler.
Then we have this: THE WANDERERS by Carlos Sisí. While Manel Loureiro's
series started in Galicia, Sisi's apocalypse takes place in Málaga (South of Spain).
More or less the same: Zombie Apocalypse,
a bunch of survivors struggling in Málaga while trying to find the cause of the virus,
forming alliances with doctors and militars... It starts in Málaga, and,
in the third book, they move to the Alhambra palace of Granada; and then
the story goes on and the survivors end up in Barcelona. It's really cool. I love
the way Carlos Sisí writes, because he's hard and scary, but also
a bit of a cinnamon roll, and he focuses on the human side of things. Then we have...
This one is a bit stranger, not exactly your "pop culture" zombies who chase after
you and want to eat your sweet, sweet brain. This book is HANDLING THE UNDEAD
by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
He's the author of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, that novel about vampires and kids
which I love too and totally recommend. In fact, I made a video only for that book last Halloween.
HANDLING THE UNDEAD starts with "strange things happening in Stockholm"
"Suddenly, the news shock the nation: At the morgue, the dead are coming
back to life. What do they want?
Logically, to return home..." It tells the story of a bunch of people who see
how the loved ones they'd buried come back home.
And they're not really sentient;
they're just "there", doing what they used to do, but not entirely... aware.
It's really creepy, because they're still rotting and their living relatives had already
moved on and dealt with their loss, and this... This is like a bucket of cold water to the face,
you know? Having the dead back at home. Then, our next (Spanish) book is
WHEN SUSANAH CRIES by J. J. Castillo. I guess JJ stands for Juan José or Juan Jesús...
or Jack Jack.
You can see this cool cover art, with that sickly yellow-green hue
of garbage cans and pus they always put on everything zombie-related, that piss-green filter.
WHEN SUSANAH CRIES tells the story of a fortified town named Rotten,
whose inhabitants face the siege of the undead.
It weaves the stories of the locals together
while they try to survive the zombies and things turn into, as I usually say,
a bloody mess. But these people have a little baby girl with a special gift: when she
zombies are near or she feels their presence, the baby starts crying.
So, when Susanah cries, everybody shits their pants in fear.
The last book on the list is the weirdest, punkiest of them all. I can't show you the
paperback edition because I read it on kindle, but you can buy it on LEKTU, for example.
The (Spanish) book is PETA Z: DON'T MIX WITH COLA DRINK.
It's an anthology of short stories that mix our dear animated series of the 80s
(like Mazinger Z, Dungeons and Dragons, Heidi and Marco)
with zombies. So we have stories about Heidi and zombies,
Marco and zombies, the Care Bears and zombies...
In the prologue, the writers tell you that one night 11 of them gathered in a bar,
got drunk and started writing down ideas on a paper napkin, and it snowballed into
an anthology that mixed the shows of their childhood
with zombies. My favorite tales in here
are the ones with the Care Bears, Marco, and Dungeons and Dragons. The one with Mazinger Z
and its "Breasts out!" shout was funny too. Anyway, if you don't want dramatic readings
but still crave for the gory shenanigans of the zombie genre,
read PETA Z, the anthology of zombie stories.
I've read more of these novels because I love the genre, but I preferred not to
include them in this video, because they weren't as good (to me), or were too slow
in some parts... Besides, with these... six books, I think
we have a pretty decent list for those of you
interested in the brain-eater genre. And well, if you enjoy reading about zombies,
you'll probably like Z movies too.
I can't recommend many movies, since you probably know them all already,
but some months ago I watched a pretty cool one. It's not super famous;
the name is IT STAINS THE SANDS RED.
It tells the story of a stripper stranded in the middle of nowhere, in an American desert
near the Mexican border, I think,
and she has to walk for several days across the desertic plains.
Turns out, she gets her period,
so she starts leaving behind a trail of blood, since she has to get rid of her tampons
and obviously there are no trashcans in the desert;
so now she's like wounded prey leaving a bloody trail. And there's a zombie
walking after her, only after her, it's impossible to lose him. So you can imagine what it's like,
to walk nonstop until night falls and you're about to collapse. You have to stop
and sleep for a while, and you know that the goddamn zombie is like 20 metres (65ft) behind you,
and he won't stop, he needs no rest. It's a cool movie, because it's not like
"Bang bang guns, here's the Army, call for backup..." No; it's just
a woman trying to survive heat and hunger while chased by a zombie
who won't stop for a second until reaching her. It's a bit like IT FOLLOWS,
but funnier... and, you know, with more necrosis. Now, completely unrelated to zombies,
these 1-2 of September I'll be in Almuñécar at a Geeky-Comic-Books event
hosted by OUTWORLD SKS. They're new, it seems it's the first convention
they do in Almuñécar. And I'll be there
with other members of the Fantasy Club, signing and selling
my novel THE VISIT OF THE SELKIE (soon in English!). They'll bring their novels too,
which are pretty neat. So if you feel like dropping by
Almuñécar (Granada), near the beach... Come and say hi!
I'll be glad to meet you. The event, if I'm not mistaken,
opens at 10am and closes at 8pm, both 1-2 of September.
I'll try to be present as many hours as I can,
so come visit me if you're not too far.
And this was this week's video. I hope you liked it,
I hope you like zombies too; and, if you read any of these books, please
come back and tell me what you thought! You can comment in this video or in the next ones.
I love reading your comments, and try to reply as fast
as possible.
Well, I hope you're enjoying what's left of summer,
and thank you so much for watching me one week more. Until next time. Bye-bye! :D
