Under the initiative of several pioneering teachers in France, the University of Lorraine
published online its first MOOC in 2013.
This MOOC was known as COURLIS, an online course on applied statistics.
At the time, it could not be considered a real strategy,
other than to test our capacity to design,
host and deliver a MOOC in a completely independent way.
The first lesson which could be drawn very swiftly from this experience
was the need to pool together with other institutions.
Today, the Université de Lorraine offers 3 MOOCs with regular sessions on the FUN platform
and is planning to launch 2 new MOOCs in 2017.
The first MOOC, whose title is "The roots of scientific words",
is aimed at students in medical, paramedical and biology areas.
It aims to teach students about the concept of etymology in the domain of biology.
This MOOC served as a proof of concept at university scale.
It allowed a support methodology to be established for teachers and researchers,
ranging from instructional design to resource development
and audio-visual production and multimedia.
The upcoming MOOCs are:
A MOOC on the anatomy of wood
and a MOOC on the Battle of Verdun, which marked its centenary in 2016.
These two MOOCs both have a very strong regional dimension.
The MOOC on the anatomy of wood is run by an école d'ingénieur (technical university)
focused on wood industry, an industry with a strong presence in the region due to the Vosges forests nearby.
The MOOC entitled "Following in the footsteps of soldiers at Verdun"
was designed together with the Verdun Memorial Museum, also located in the region
(Verdun is less than 100 km from Nancy).
These two new courses help valorize peculiarities and excellence of local teaching units on a larger scale.
One could consider this a "niche effect".
Following the exploration phase and the implementation of proper infrastructures,
the Université de Lorraine is now launching a third phase to formalize the MOOC development process.
This is based on setting up an in-house call for projects
where teachers and teaching units receive support
as soon as they express interest via an institutional validation procedure for projects,
joining a general process intended to run digital learning projects
by allocating resources for instructional design, audiovisual production,
training and assistance to selected teaching units.
At strategic level, this process falls under the Université de Lorraine's broader objective
of transforming teaching and learning practices.
The development of MOOCs is part of this strategy,
alongside other measures that are essentially incentive and targeted at teaching units
for the use of digital technology
as a lever to improve the quality of education.
In summary,
the main principles of our strategy are:
- A declared general objective: transforming teaching and learning practices;
- Complementary measures: adopting convergent measures towards this same goal;
- An incremental approach: firstly, exploration and experience, and then mainstreaming;
- Pooling: strong involvement in university networks
for the production of resources, pooling of platforms and visibility of courses.
