My name is Miguel Ángel. I'm from Málaga. I'm 22 and I study Geography at the University of Málaga.
Did you go to a public, a private, or a charter school?
I went to public school.
I liked it because it's easier to relate with the people in public than in other types of schools.
What is the progression for the education system?
It starts with primary school which lasts six years and is obligatory.
After these first six years you go to four years of secondary school which is also required until you are 16.
Once you are 16 you can begin to work and you are not required to study.
Before university you have to complete two more years which are called "bachillerato".
After that, you can enter university through an exam (who's score is combined with your grade from bachillerato).
If you turn 16 before finishing the four required years of secondary school, you can leave school.
Once you are 16, it's not required because in Spain, you can begin to work at 16.
At what age do students begin studying languages?
In Málaga they normally begin at seven or eight.
They start with English.
French is an option to study once students are 14.
What was your favorite class?
The best class was physical education.
Us boys liked playing soccer so every time we had P.E. we would get together so we could play.
Is a uniform required?
This depends on the school.
For example, within public schools,
there are schools that are part of a distinct institution.
For example, a school with priests and monks; a religious school.
They have to wear a uniform, but in the majority of cases there are not uniforms.
What channel did you take to enter university?
So after my obligatory studies in primary and secondary school,
I chose the science branch.
After this, I got into university for that field.
What is your major?
My major is Geography.
What we study,
are the physical and human processes that the planet suffers from the beginnings of time until now.
How did you choose this major?
I studied science in bachillerato, but
my major is part of the social branch.
But because I didn't find something I liked in science,
and this was a class I liked in the obligatory secondary studies, I picked it and got in.
What are the options for work after graduating with this degree?
So, you have a lot of options.
You can work as a professor, which is the most general.
A school teacher teaching geography.
You can work in the local government,
or you can work on your own in a laboratory.
Do you want to continue for a masters or doctorate degree?
Yes. In Spain it's almost essential to do a masters after university.
If you study a major and you don't have a masters,
you have a very little possibility of entering a company to work.
Let's say the years they cut from university, they have added back on with the masters which is almost required.
