CAN I SEW A SWUIMSUIT USING A REGULAR SEWING MACHINE?
Hi! My name is Tommie, from SIRENAPATTERNS, and today I will answer a question I receive very often.
Can I sew swimsuits using a regular sewing machine?
The short answer is: YES. What do you need to sew a swimsuit using a regular sewing machine?
Number 1: a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch.
Number 2: ballpoint or stretch needles. Optional: A stretchy thread.
For number 1, a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch. Behind me, I have two types
of sewing machines. One is less expensive, a bit over 100 USD
The other costs a bit over 200 USD. Both have a zig-zag stitch.
In the electronic model you can program a specific stitch width and length
in millimeters, so it is more precise. However, even with this basic sewing machine
we can also use different types of zig-zag stitches, wide and narrow.
About the needles, here we can see ballpoint and stretch needles.
Both of these needles can be used for stretchy fabrics. What's the difference between them?
Stretch needles are recommended for spandex nylon, swimsuit fabrics, or other fabrics that stretch a lot.
Ballpoint needles are more generic and work with any type of stretchy fabric or knitted fabrics.
Both work! Try them out. The important thing is that you have a needle with a rounded point,
so it pierces a knitted fabric easily and it doesn't skip stitches.
This is really important. Here are sample stitches, made with
different type of zig-zag stitches and using a regular sewing machine.
The first one here is joining pieces with a narrow zig-zag stitch. If you look,
this is not a very wide zig-zag. It's almost straight, but the zig-zag allows me to stretch
and the thread does not break.
On the outside it looks perfect and it stretches. This means we can sew
the sides of a swimsuit or the bottom side using this type of stitch and it won't break.
In this other sample I have the elastic, also sewn using a zig-zag stitch.
In this case it's a wider zig-zag stitch. Finally, here's the hem, when we flip the elastic
to finish the swimsuit. This is with a medium-sized zig-zag stitch.
If you look here, all three stitches can be made with any of these regular sewing machines,
without the need for expensive equipment. Finally, here are two types of thread.
The recommended thread for swimsuits is regular polyester thread, it works,
and it is much less expensive. This stretchy thread is called Eloflex
If you see, it doesn't break easily. It is a good purchase, but not indispensable.
This other thread here is called Wooly Nylon, and it is a bit hairier. Wooly Nylon.
And it also stretches a bit. Conclusion: we can sew swimsuits using a regular sewing machine
