The Serbian winger joined the Reds for £20million from Benfica in the summer of 2014 as a highly-rated attacking prospect
But a series of loans and the success of Jurgen Klopp's new-look forward-line has seen Markovic fall by the wayside following just one season in Liverpool's first team
After over three years without a competitive appearance for Liverpool, Markovic looked as though he would seal a long-awaited permanent departure on Europe's transfer deadline day yesterday
Liverpool had agreed a deal with Anderlecht - where Markovic spent the 2017-18 season on loan - worth £2
9million. But according to reports from Goal the 23-year-old, who had rejected a potential switch to Greek side PAOK, was unable to agree personal terms with the Belgian club in the final hours of the window
That was despite boarding a private jet to the Belgian capital of Brussels after a fee had been agreed
It is believed Liverpool had also negotiated a 50 per-cent sell-on clause for Markovic in the event that the wide-man enjoyed a positive spell with Anderlecht, where he scored once in eight matches in the second half of last term
Markovic is into the final year of his contract and Liverpool must hope a club are willing to pay money for his services in January or face a whopping £20m loss on the forward
It is reminiscent of Liverpool's signing of Mario Balotelli, another player who signed for the club under previous manager Brendan Rodgers in the wake of Luis Suarez's departure to Barcelona that summer
Balotelli was signed for £16m from AC Milan but signed for Nice two years later on a free transfer - where he has since scored 43 goals in 66 games
Markovic meanwhile - who has 22 caps for Serbia, the last of which came in November 2016 - will be free to talks to clubs over a free transfer next summer as of January 1 He has not been involved for Liverpool's senior squad since a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers at Anfield in early May 2015 despite making a total of 34 appearances that season, scoring three goals
Loan spells with Fenerbahce, Sporting, Hull and Anderlecht have followed though he has failed to score more than two goals in any of his temporary spells
And he is almost certain to depart as a free agent in 12 months' time despite Liverpool's hope that they could make further money back on Markovic through their sell-on clause
Markovic has never once played under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool with the Reds benefitting from having Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in wide positions, the pair having scored 64 times combined last term
They have already contributed five of Liverpool's seven goals this season, too, while Klopp also has Xherdan Shaqiri as a handy back-up option on the flanks
Liverpool return to action today with a trip to Leicester City at 12.30pm as they look to go into the international break off of four successive victories to start a season in which they hope to contend for the league title
