The Portuguese boss is becoming frustrated at Manchester United's refusal to spend big this summer

And it's been claimed by an associate of Mourinho that the club are more concerned with finances than winning silverware

Asked about United's summer targets, the Mourinho source told the Daily Star: "The truth is so easy - the owners don't want to spend money

The profits are paying the banks." While Liverpool have spent £175million strengthening their squad this summer, United's only significant outlay has been £52m on midfielder Fred

Against that backdrop, manager Mourinho, below, is becoming increasingly annoyed at United's failure to bring in the players he wants

Top of his wishlist are two World Cup stars - Croatia winger Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan and England defender Harry Maguire from Leicester

They are likely to cost a combined £130m and Mourinho wants deals wrapped up as soon as possible to give new recruits time to settle in

When asked how many new signings he felt he needed, the Portuguese replied: "I would get two more players

One thing is what I would like. Another thing is what is going to happen." Already without 10 first-team players, including World Cup winner Paul Pogba and United's England contingent, who remain on extended breaks following their exploits in Russia, the failure to land his top targets has compounded Mourinho's annoyance

Even though United have a favourable start to the league campaign, with Tottenham the only one of their direct rivals to face in their opening eight games, Mourinho forecast a tough outlook with the new season just a fortnight away

"If you look to the players Chelsea and Liverpool have in pre-season, also Arsenal, if you compare, you see the difference of the situation," said Mourinho ahead of tonight's friendly against AC Milan

"Our first match of the season is against Leicester and the second is against Brighton

"It's clear it's a much better situation for Leicester, a team working for six weeks minimum with all the players except one defender and one striker

"I don't think Brighton have any player that isn't doing a very good pre-season with lots of training and matches

"
