Waching daily Dec 30 2018

Chelsea went into the match knowing they could close the gap on third-placed Manchester City to one point with a win ahead of City's visit to Southampton (2.15pm).

The Blues were the better team in a rather uneventful first half at Selhurst Park

The Palace defence largely kept the likes of Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud at bay, with a long-range Willian effort the only shot on target

Former Liverpool and City forward Craig Bellamy was disappointed at the performance from Maurizio Sarri's side

He believed Chelsea were too negative in a game they really needed to win to maintain their slim title chances

And he claimed Azpilicueta and Alonso had to push further up the pitch to create Palace more problems

If I'm being honest, I've been a little bit disappointed with Chelsea," Bellamy said on Sky Sports

They've been very predictable in their build up. "It's been very easy for Crystal Palace to defend

At times I think they're a little bit concerned at throwing too many people forward

They're worried about Crystal Palace's counter-attacking ability. "But the wingers they have, Hazard's always going to look to come inside, Willian's going to look to come inside

Put the full-backs on (up the pitch), you've got two centre-backs who can deal with (Wilfried) Zaha, well they can try and deal with Zaha

But they seem to want to keep three back on one player at times. "I just feel they need to throw men forward because they need to win today

Chelsea latest news Olivier Giroud leave Selhurst Park on crutches following win over Crystal Palace - Duration: 1:37.

Chelsea earned a crucial 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace thanks to N'Golo Kante's strike but it looks like the three points came at a price.

Blues frontman Olivier Giroud picked up a nasty looking ankle injury in the second-half in a game which also saw Willian get a knock.

Giroud, 32, was caught late by James Tomkins after firing the ball into the roof of the net – a goal that was ruled out for offside – and came off after having treatment.

And the World Cup winner was pictured leaving the ground on crutches by Belgian journalist Kristoff Terreur.

This could be a precautionary measure taken by the club but Chelsea fans will be hoping it does not lead to a lengthy Giroud absence as Maurizio Sarri could then be forced to start the unreliable Alvaro Morata up top.

Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah gesture to Roberto Firmino could be key for title - Wright - Duration: 3:08.

At least according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright. The Reds led 4-1 by half-time with Firmino scoring a brace and Salah netting from the spot after he was felled by Sead Kolasinac

Salah could have been expected to take up penalty-taking duties again when Dejan Lovren tumbled to the floor at a corner after being shoved by Kolasinac

**PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** But the Egyptian, who has made his hunger for goals quite clear during his time at Anfield, graciously gave the ball to Firmino

Though he had missed three of his previous five spot-kicks, Firmino tucked away from 12 yards on this occasion for his first career treble

And striker-turned-pundit Wright believes that Salah's gesture shows the harmony and camaraderie within Jurgen Klopp's squad

He told Premier League Productions: "This is why people do become champions, because you're sharing it out

"You're sharing the love about. He's thanking him and that's what it comes down to

"It's going to need all of them. It's going to take the effort of all of them for them to end up winning this

"Those are the kind of things that stand you in good stead with your team-mates

" Liverpool face title rivals Manchester City next up in a potentially season-defining clash at the Etihad

City are the defending league champions and were the strong title favourites until a recent winter wobble, which means Liverpool will still hold a healthy points advantage even if they suffer their first top-flight defeat of the season to Pep Guardiola's men

And such is Liverpool's blistering form, Wright believes the title is in their grasp - even with another 18 games to go until the campaign's climax

Wright said of Liverpool: "They were two points behind them [City] - that's how it can change

You have to look at Liverpool now and it's almost theirs to lose.  "They're the only team that has lost it from being at the top at Christmas, on two occasions

"But you look at them and I do feel there's a real sense of professionalism and focus about them that is quite impressive

"
