Arsenal are reportedly confident they will tie up the free transfer of Switzerland right-back
Stephan Lichtsteiner.
Arsenal are working hard to add more experience to their ranks following the appointment of
Unai Emery.
Goal report that Lichtsteiner will prioritise a move to the Emirates over several other
potential suitors including Dortmund, Monaco and Marseille.
The 34-year-old, who will officially leave Juventus when his contract expires on Friday,
is in negotiations over penning a two-year contact at Arsenal.
And it is said that Emery and co are optimistic that they will secure the Swiss' signature.
Lichtsteiner, who is set to star for Switzerland at the upcoming World Cup, is leaving Juve
after seven successful seasons at the club.
He has won the Serie A title in each of his campaigns in Turin and won the Coppa Italia
on four occasions.
Arsenal will have to operate on a tight budget this summer with reports that Emery will only
have upwards of £60m at his disposal.
Adding the experience of Lichtsteiner and Papastathopoulos to their defence for a combined
£16m will be a major boost to the new Gunners chief.
But club great Emmanuel Petit has branded Arsenal's board 'ridiculous' amid the
rumours of their meagre transfer allowance.
The Frenchman said: "When I hear about the amount of money Emery has to spend, I can't
believe it.
Where are you going with £60m?
You're going nowhere.
"With that amount of money, you can put the best manager in the world on the sideline
and the team won't change much.
"There is quality at the club, but not to match the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool.
They need to bring in top quality players.
"We need talented experienced players.
We need big characters and big personalities.
This is what has been missing.
For me, £60m is ridiculous."
