Breaking News - Simona Halep beats Alison Riske at Roland Garros after flat start - Duration: 6:21.

Having waited three days to open her French Open campaign, world No 1 Simona Halep then let five games go by before finally arriving fashionably late to the Paris party

In a match held over from Tuesday night due to rain, the 26-year-old Romanian looked in serious trouble at 5-0 down to world No 83 Alison Riske, before winning 14 of the next 17 games

Initially flat but eventually impressive, Halep is through to face American Taylor Townsend after a 2-6 6-1 6-1 victory in just over an hour and a half

Halep is the favourite in a wide-open women's field here in Paris. She is in that awkward position, relatively common in recent years on the WTA tour, of being world No 1 without having won a Grand Slam title

She came closest in the final here last year, losing from a set and a break up to Jelena Ostapenko

Riske, who is competing with British No 1 Jo Konta in the doubles here at Roland Garros, played according to her name and there was plenty of reward for her boldness in the first set

As Halep eventually found her range, however, the 27-year-old American's ambitious tennis started to fail her

We saw both sides of Halep in this match. She looked lightweight and passive in the first set, before reminding us what an awesome athletic spectacle she can be when in full flow

This would have been an extremely embarrassing defeat against a player who had only won one match in the main draw at Roland Garros in five attempts

Clay is comfortably Riske's worst surface. She has won only one match in her career against a player inside the world's top 30 on this surface

Her most consistent major has been Wimbledon, with three appearance in his third round, including last year

The red dirt does not suit her aggressive style but she came out blasting regardless and attacked her opponent's vulnerable serve

Halep's smooth movement and relentless groundstrokes make her well suited to the attritional warfare of clay-court tennis but she stands at just 5ft 6in and lacks the power and serving capabilities of some of her rivals

She has to work hard for every ball, and when her game is not on point she lacks the weaponry to blast her way out of trouble

Normally so steady, Halep made 16 unforced errors in the first set alone. She lost her cool at 5-0 down, taking a couple of swipes at the clay with her racket

That release of emotion seemed to trigger a change in momentum, as Halep began to take her frustration out of the ball, striking her groundstrokes with more venom

The No 1 seed clawed back a couple of games but she had left herself too much to do, and Riske took the set with her third break of serve

Halep took what was surely a tactical 'toilet' break after the first set, leaving Riske alone on court to contemplate the scale of her potential achievement

The American had never beaten anyone inside the world's top five at a Grand Slam before

Returning to the court, Halep took that sliver of momentum she had gained at the end of the first set and ran with it

The Romanian began to hit with more topspin, giving herself more margin for error

This allowed her to be more proactive and Riske looked vulnerable when she was forced on to the back foot

In a reversal of the first set Halep moved 5-0 ahead, meaning she had now won seven of the last eight games

Taking the set 6-1, she moved 3-0 up in the decider and closed out the match comfortably

Three days and five games into the French Open, the favourite has made her presence felt at last
