Liverpool transfer news: Virgil van Dijk next on wish list as Reds plot £183m triple swoop

LIVERPOOL are ready to spend another £135million to land Virgil van Dijk and Thomas Lemar — after making Naby Keita their club-record signing. Jurgen Klopp's £183m spree started as he agreed a £48m deal for RB Leipzig's Keita.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk remains Liverpools No1 target this summer.

Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal to sign Naby Keita in 2018. He had a medical yesterday and will make the move to Anfield next summer. The Reds will also pay an undisclosed premium for the Guinean midfielder.

Kop boss Klopp is set to smash the club's transfer record again with a last-gasp £75m bid for Southampton centre-back VVD and are also prepared to test Monaco's resolve with a £60m offer for  Lemar.

The French club have rejected two bids but Klopp will not be put off.

The triple swoop could pave the way for the exit of  Philippe Coutinho, who has been the subject of four rejected bids from Barcelona, yet Liverpool insist he is not for sale.

Previously, the Reds said they had dropped their interest in Van Dijk after Saints threatened to report an illegal approach to the Premier League.

Liverpool are willing to test Monacos resolve with a huge bid for Thomas Lemar.

Jurgen Klopp has been backed by the Liverpool board with plenty of funds. But Klopp is preparing a stunning late move to get his No1 target to rebuild his defence.

Van Dijk, 26, has been on Klopp's wishlist for a long time and he wants to build his defence around the Dutchman.

Southampton say he is going nowhere – but they also have a player that is training away from their first team. Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino faces a massive task to get Van Dijk back playing.

Chelsea and Arsenal have also been tracking his progress since his arrival from Celtic in 2015. They can offer the lure of a high-profile season in London before the World Cup at the end of the  campaign.

The Gunners had been interested in Lemar earlier this summer but Arsene Wenger claimed the deal was 'dead' after insisting Monaco had closed the door on further sales.

New signing Mohamed Salah continued his good start with a goal against Arsenal.   Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal: Firmino, Mane, Salah and Sturridge score as Reds smash terrible Gunners.

The Ligue 1 champions have already sold Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City and Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea — with teenage striker Kylian Mbappe  on the brink of joining Paris Saint-Germain.

But following Klopp's bid for Lemar, who can play centrally or out wide,  Liverpool hope to change Monaco's stance in the coming days. It is clear owners FSG are ready to bankroll the ambitious deal.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits he would welcome back Philippe Coutinho after Barcelona transfer saga. Liverpool snapped up Keita yesterday and the 22-year-old will officially join the Reds in July 2018.

Keita  scored eight goals and provided eight assists to help Leipzig finish  second in the German Bundesliga last season. The deal will surpass the £35m paid in 2011 to Newcastle for  Andy Carroll.

Meanwhile, Coutinho is expected to be fit for  Brazil against Ecuador on Thursday night  despite the fact he has been sidelined for nearly a month with an apparent back injury.

The 25-year-old has not played for Liverpool so far this season after submitting a transfer request to try to force through a move to Barca.

Brazil doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said: "From a medical point of view, Philippe is in the perfect condition to play.

[Breaking News] North Korea fires missile over Japan in 'unprecedented threat' - BBC UPDATe - Duration: 4:27.

North Korea fires missile over Japan in 'unprecedented threat'.

North Korea has fired a missile over northern Japan in a move Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo

Abe called an "unprecedented" threat to his country.

The missile, launched early on Tuesday Korean time, flew over Hokkaido island before crashing

into the sea.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting in response.

North Korea has conducted a flurry of missile tests in recent months but firing projectiles

over Japan is rare and sharply escalates tensions.

On the two previous occasions North Korea fired rockets over Japan - in 1998 and 2009

- the North claimed they were for satellite launches, not weapons.

Residents told to seek shelter.

The South Korean military said the missile was fired eastward from near the North's capital,

Pyongyang.

Early analysis of the launch suggest the missile: flew a distance of more than 2,700km (1,678

miles).

reached a maximum altitude of about 550km (342 miles), lower than most previous North

Korean missiles.

fell into the North Pacific Ocean 1,180km off the Japanese coast.

No effort was made by the Japanese to shoot down the missile but it issued a safety warning

telling citizens in Hokkaido to take shelter in "a sturdy building or basement".

US and Japanese forces are currently taking part in training drills in Hokkaido.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered a show of "overwhelming" force in response

to the launch.

Four South Korean jets staged a live bombing drill on Tuesday.

Mr Abe said he had spoken to US President Donald Trump and that both agreed to increase

pressure on North Korea.

Analysis: Yogita Limaye, BBC News Seoul.

Over the past week it seemed as though the rhetoric from North Korea had abated.

There was less fiery commentary from the country's media than we'd seen in preceding weeks.

But the latest missile launch will certainly dispel any notions that Pyongyang is backing

down, even though there's been international condemnation and UN sanctions passed against

it.

In some ways, a provocation was expected as US and South Korean forces are currently conducting

joint military exercises.

These drills are held every August, and there's always some retaliation to them from North

Korea.

Last year, Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test shortly after the exercises.

But few North Korea watchers expected an overt missile test over Japanese territory - especially

over the north, as previous threats on Guam would take missiles over the south of Japan.

Mr Abe called the launch an "outrageous act" and an "unprecedented, serious and grave threat

[that] greatly damages regional peace and security".

He said his government was doing its utmost to protect people's lives.

North Korea's conventional and nuclear weapons programmes are a breach of international sanctions,

so the test is being seen as a major provocation and an escalation of tensions on the Korean

peninsula.

Earlier this month, North Korea threatened to fire missiles towards the US Pacific territory

of Guam, while US President Donald Trump warned Pyongyang would face "fire and fury" if it

continued to threaten the US.

There have also been some reports in recent months that North Korea is preparing to carry

out its sixth nuclear test.

But last week, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the fact that North Korea had not carried

out any missile launches since the UN imposed a fresh round of sanctions was an indication

of restraint by Pyongyang.

In other reaction: A meeting of South Korea's National Security

Council (NSC) was convened to discuss the issue, Yonhap reported.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson expressed "outrage" at North Korea's "reckless provocation".

Australia has condemned the launch as a "provocative, dangerous, destabilising and threatening act".

The Pentagon said that Tuesday's test did not represent a threat to the US and the military

was now working to gather more intelligence about it.
