The Monastery of Moreruela - Duration: 6:45.

Some people need to get away from the noise,

disconnect themselves from the world,

and find peace.

Some people need to be surprised, to be moved,

to find, in what's hidden, an ancient beauty.

Some people need to find themselves,

to listen to the old voice of stones,

to be told about destiny.

And some people... find it all.

In the village of Granja de Moreruela,

halfway between Zamora and Benavente,

is hidden one of the greatest jewels of European Cistercian art

the Santa María de Moreruela monastery.

Its ancient ruins have made way for a Monastery that has been recovered for visitors,

where getting away from the daily grind and immersing oneself in history is quite easy.

Over the last few decades, a great effort has been made to return the monastery to its former splendour,

or as much of it as is possible, since it was abandoned in the 19th century

after almost nine centuries of history.

The work of architects and archaeologists has allowed us to know

more about the life of those Cistercian monks,

the true history of the ancient monastery of Santa María de Moreruela.

The monastery was first founded in the 10th century.

Regarding the first monastery, we don't know for sure whether it was in the same place or somewhere nearby.

There are documents telling us that the present monastery was built in the 12th century.

Shortly thereafter, many monks were attracted to the new Cistercian order,

some of whom acquired great power within it.

The fame of Santa María de Moreruela soon reached every corner of the kingdom.ino.

Ora et labora, the Cistercian order motto, ruled those monks' lives.

The entire monastery was organised around its church,

built in Romanesque style with some Gothic style innovations.

Its interior, now open to the plateau sky, is overwhelming.

There is but little decoration.

Nothing was to distract the monks from their inner dedication and meditative state.

While the inside of the church is magnificent,

even open to the sun, the wind and the rain, as Miguel de Unamuno wrote in his day,

a walk around it will bring surprises with every step.

Here and there we can see stone-mason's marks, surprising inscriptions...

and, at the end of our journey, we'll find the chevet of the church

and, in it, an endless feeling of calm and order.

The monks' working and living quarters were distributed around the cloister

the refectory, the dormitories and the work rooms...

Silence was an unbreakable obligation

and it could only be broken in certain rooms, at certain times.

That silence and aura of peace can still be perceived in every room, every corner of the monastery.

The monastery's long story includes many renovations and additions to the original buildings,

in order to adapt to new times and needs.

In the 16th century a new cloister, separated from the monks' one, was built,

with the purpose of providing cover for the many pilgrims that sought out the monastery's hospitality.

Nothing should disturb the monks' religious meditations.

After the last monks left the building in 1835,

the monastery soon deteriorated due to neglect and plundering.

The praying of matins in the middle of the night or the silent wandering of the monks

by its cloisters are now just old memories among the stones.

The monastery now belongs to the monks that inhabited it centuries ago,

but also to our visitors,

a place where the past looks the future directly in the eye.

Tomorrow, this visit to the monastery of Santa María de Moreruela

will just be an everlasting memory.
