Winnipeg celebrates its birthday on November 8 because on this day in 1873 the Act to Incorporate
the City of Winnipeg was passed by the Manitoba Legislature.
It says here the city shall be divided into four wards to be called respectively the north,
south, east and west wards.
The original bill for incorporation was actually thrown out.
At issue as civic taxation and the financial burden on major property holders.
Advocates for Incorporation eventually became frustrated with the Legislature's lack of progress.
Tempers reached their pinnacle when a small group ambushed the Speaker of the House,
Dr. CJ Bird, and had him tarred and feathered.
Despite a $1000 reward for information, no one came forward.
The first election was not held until the following year, that is why the City often
dates itself to 1874 rather than 1873.
Winnipeg is now 145 years old.
The City has always been proud of how far it has come in so little time.

During these celebrations, the City reflects and pays homage to the colourful characters
of its past as well as the diverse communities that have shaped Winnipeg.
