David de Gea wants clarification on Jose Mourinho's future at Manchester United before he agrees to sign a new contract

Talks over a new deal remain deadlocked, despite United taking up the option to extend his current contract by 12 months until June 2020

The Spaniard is happy at Old Trafford after seven years at the club, but wants to know the direction the club is taking

According to The Mirror the future of Mourinho is a big sticking point when it comes to thrashing out an agreement

 United have struggled this season and are trailing in their efforts to secure a top four finish, let alone muster a title challenge

They sit seventh, seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and 14 behind league leaders Manchester City

Mourinho remains under pressure to achieve Champions League football next year and an improvement in form

They were held at home by Crystal Palace last weekend and needed a last-minute Marouane Fellaini goal to beat Young Boys and secure a last 16 place in Europe

 The Spain No 1 wants to win the Champions League and add to the solitary Premier League crown he has earned with United

The 28-year-old also wants parity with the club's highest earner, Alexis Sanchez on around £350,000-a-week

On Tuesday night Mourinho called the Spaniard 'the best goalkeeper in the world' and declared that he knew he wanted to stay at Old Trafford
