Hi, Hi, I'm Luis. Welcome to a new video
In today's video we're with Nancy Obando
Who makes 'Pasto Barniz'
Hi there
I'll be happy to talk about
Our culture and handcrafts here in Nariño (Colombia)
Since when do you work on this handcrafts?
Well, i'm proud to be a member of 'Obando's' family
This family has worked on this since 1850
I am very proud to be part of this family tradition
The Pasto Barniz is an ancestral technique of decoration
And it is gaining more and more recognition
In fact it was recently declared 'immaterial national property of Colombia'
Ok so now please tell us how you work on this handcrafts
Ok, firstly
Let's talk about what it is made from
It is made from a plant called 'Mopa Mopa'
It can be found in Putumayo
We look for this type of leaves
And once we get them we boil them
For around 2 hours
And then it becomes something similar to the black thing
Then we take this thing and out it on a rock
So we can give it a different texture and take away the dirt
This is the thing before we clean it
That's what we take out
We take this and place it into water plenty of times
These are the leaves when we get them
We try to find them in small size
This is a leave
So once we clean this
we try to give it color using only natural ingredients
This is when the thing has its natural color
In this case it already has a color
And then we make this shape
And then once the color is good we taste the temperature with our lips
And then we try to make it a screen
This is done by 2 people
They put it in their mouth and then pull
And finally we get something like this
and we apply this into the wood
And depending on the design we would use whatever we need
And then, using a little knife, we will make this designs
We're going to make a little representation
let's pretend i'm pasting this into the wood
It can be simple because we have no previous shape, we just do,
We use our own ability
We make different designs: precolombino, contemporary, and traditional
This is traditional
It was made by my father José María Obando
And more members have designed
This is more colorful this is from the 5 Obando's generation
And this was made by the grandchild
We can see they are differently designed
We encourage you to visit Pasto (Colombia) and see all of this in person
You'll find a lot of incredibly beautiful handicrafts
Thank you
