  David De Gea wants to know if Jose Mourinho will be in charge of Manchester United next season before he signs a new contract

 United have taken up their option to extend his current deal by one year until June 2020 but talks over a new agreement remain deadlocked

  Although De Gea is happy at Old Trafford and is prepared to commit his future to the Manchester giants, he would first like to see what direction the club is going to take

 The Spain international goalkeeper is keen to win titles and Champions Leagues — he has lifted just one Premier League crown since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011

 United's title bid for this season was over almost as soon as it began and they currently sit seventh — 14 points behind league-leading neighbours Man City after just 13 games

 De Gea wants to see United challenge for the top honours again, like they did under Sir Alex Ferguson

 Mourinho's future remains in doubt, and could well pay the price if he fails to deliver Champions League football for next season

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with his job.  Another sticking point is his salary

The 28-year-old wants to be paid the same as the club's top earner, Alexis Sanchez

 Striker Sanchez is on around £500,000-a-week, including all his bonuses, and the Spain No 1 — who contributes far more to the cause than the former Arsenal star — feels he should be equally rewarded

 De Gea is understood to have rejected an improved offer from United of around £275,000-a-week

He has been their best player during his eight seasons at Old Trafford and wants wages that reflect this

  United activated the 12-month option because otherwise, as he was on course to become a free agent in the summer, foreign clubs would have been able to talk to him about a move from January 1
