(upbeat music)
- My name is Adam Eli.
It is Election Night, Midterms 2018.
We are at the LGBT center with Voices4
and basically we're having a big party
because 2016 Election Night was
so incredibly traumatic,
we didn't want people to be alone.
We wanted them to be surrounded by
community, friends, and family.
Come on!
Serena, can you tell us, why are you here tonight?
- We use the privilege with voting
and it really shouldn't be
because it's something I have a right to do.
Actually showing up to something
and like checking the boxes to lead
toward the next right action, it feels right,
it really does feel right.
- [Adam] What would you say that
the issues that were most important to you were
during this election cycle?
- I would definitely say LGBT rights,
but also gun violence.
I just feel like that's just like such a big issue
and no one's doing anything about it.
- [Black] A lot of trans rights are
on the verge of being erased.
No matter how you present,
your gender is what you claim it to be.
Trans lives matter and they will not be erased.
- I want you to look at who's representing you in office
and if they're not doing the job
that you want them to do,
you have a voice not only to vote,
but you have an opportunity to run for office yourself.
Because your voice is loud and it is proud
and it can shine greater and farther
than any hate speech every could and ever would.
(cheering)
- Regardless of how it turns out tonight,
I think that it definitely stirs
some action within our generation
and I feel like it actually put out
a sense of urgency that I think
that we needed to have.
- I think that young people sometimes
don't realize the power that they have
as citizens and when you turn 18
to like sort of take initiative
and sort of educate yourself, but I think that's changing.
- How does it feel to be someone
who is really politically engaged
but not have the ability to vote?
- It feels especially frustrating
when I hear people say that they don't
wanna come out in the rain to vote,
when they don't have the time to vote,
because there are so many people
who can't vote for whatever reason
because we're too young, we're undocumented.
The choices you make effect us.
- Regardless of what happens this evening,
what are our next steps as a community?
- Literally supporting each other.
See how you can volunteer either at your local shelter.
See how you can volunteer within
your local activist groups,
see how you can advocate for those around.
- I mean after tonight I definitely think
we should still get involved, continue to vote.
Don't let this be like the last time you get involved
because don't forget we also have 2020 coming up
and this is just like half the battle.
