-- What are you doing??
-- what are you doing?
Well, we're going to do a video about
how to fix a flat tire
but ours wasn't flat
so I'm going to perforate it to make the video
run the Intro!
Weeelcome!
to a new Episode of FC Autos
and today we'll show you
how you can fix your flat tires
but we'll also give you some tips
and recommendations to
consider so you can arrive safely at your destination
in case you get a flat tire and you're far from home
or driving on a highway
This Episode is once again brought to you
thanks to the support and partnership
with Valvoline!
Valvoline, thank you so much for supporting
and partnering with us once again
and we want to remind you about Valvoline's DIY videos
in both English & Spanish
at their site TeamValvoline.com
in their Night School tab
they have very entertaining tutorials
they're very well made
and you'll find great tips
that you will surely be interested in
additionally we want to remind you
that Valvoline has a new Instagram page we're following
that's in Spanish called @GarageValvoline
it's also their Facebook page and
if you follow them
please let them know you're there because of FC Autos
Valvoline, thanks again for supporting us
and our Channel
and now let's get started! This is what we're going to need
First we recommend you have a spare tire
and it should be in good conditions
an alternative would be to have these
types of products to temporarily fix the tires
we'll explain how to use them
and the pros and cons this product has
we suggest you get a portable aire compressor
in case of any situation that might happen
if you're not home
whether driving on the highway
or somewhere distant
we're going to talk about different
types of gauges you could use to check
your tire's pressure
and for last, we're going to use this kit
that you can buy online and it's very cheap
and once we explain to you how to use it
you'll be able to fix your car's tire yourself
and it's very important to notice that
in order to use this kit you'll need
either an air compressor at home to inflate the tire
or a portable compressor if you aren't home
and for last, I forgot, we're going to use
some hand tools like a screwdriver and pliers
to be able to remove the screw or whatever it is
that's causing the flat tire
We'll talk about different scenarios and
we'll explain what you could do on each of them
the first procedure, or at least the safest one
would be to use your spare tire to get to your destination safe
Let's suppose you're driving on the highway
or on a road and you get a flat tire
first thing you'd do
would be to pull over
on a level area
so you can change the tire
now, here's an interesting thing
let's suppose
that like us, the front tire
is the one that got flat
if your car has this type
of spare tire that comes
thinner and somewhat smaller
there's a potential risk
when driving your car
when steering or turning
with this type of tires if you place it in front
so if you get a flat tire and the flat is on the front
of your car
what you'd do would be this
you'd take the tire from the back, that's not flat
and replace it with the spare tire
and you'll place the normal tire from the back in the front
but if the flat tire happens to be
on the back
you'd just change this small one, or the normal one
at the back of the car without having to switch them
like if the flat's on the front
as a safety measure you should
be checking the condition
of your spare tire to make sure it's ok
and that you have the proper tools onboard
so you can change a tire yourself wherever you are
however, there are other options
for example
There's this type of products
which has a sealing foam inside
that if you get a flat tire regardless if it's in the front or the back
because of a nail, and you can't remove it
you could apply one or two cans
of these products
to inflate the tire and to
and to prevent
the air leak
the way to use this type of product
is to connect the product on the stem valve
place it straight and apply it
-- Upside down
--Place it upside down Yes, upside down
and this is how you'd be applying it
but this is an important thing you need to know
this product will inflate your tire up to a certain level
however this type of product ends up
spreading all over
the inside of the tire
and it's a very sticky product
so it makes it very complicated
to actually fix the tire once you take it to a shop
That's why I mentioned that
the first option would be using your spare tire
and this would be a second option
because it's only temporarily fixing
the tire
and it's just so you can either take it to a repair shop
or to just get to your destination
for a regular tire
you'd probably need
at least 2 cans to
inflate the tire half way
this means you would have to drive slowly
and carefully so you can arrive to a place
where you can add more air or to get
to your actual destination
another important thing about this product
is that you're not removing the nail or
actually fixing the tire, you're just
temporarily patching the air leak of your tire
for these mentioned scenarios it would be a good idea
to have this type of compressor. Not this brand in particular
but a compressor you can plug into your car's
12v connection
so you can inflate your tires at any moment and in any place
so you can keep on driving
the way these work is very simple
you plug the compressor
in the stem valve
like this
and you'll plug it into the 12v
connection in your car while running and in P
so you don't run out of charge
you turn the compressor on, and it'll start inflating the tire
Here it'll show you how much pressure you should have
currently in your tire
so you can just turn it off
once it's reached the pressure that your tire should have
in order to know how much PSI or pressure
your tires should have
you can normally find that information
in the back side of the gas cap
here it shows how much PSI
each of the tires should have
depending on how many passengers it has
and depending if they're the front or rear tires
and this way you can know how much PSI
you can apply
with this type of air pump
Now let's suppose you don't have the air pump
and you don't know how low your tire is
this is what you could do
to know how much PSI your tire currently has
or after you've fixed it
you could use either a manual gauge
or an electronic gaguge
the electronic gauge has the advantage to give you
very exact measurements of the PSI on your tires
however the only detail you'll need to consider
is that every time you're going on the highway
or far in the city
you'll need to check it so you know it hasn't run out of batteries
The difference with this one is that
they're very cheap and you can
find them pretty much in any store that has an automotive section
and these ones give you a PSI measurement
not as exact as these ones, but it does give
a very approximate PSI
to know how much pressure your tires have
We'll turn it on, plug it
and it's showing 23 PSI
when this one should be having 38
so we're 15 PSI below specifications
when using the manual one, is very similar
you'll plug it in
straight so you don't damage the stem valve
and here you can see it appears
that the pressure is at 22
here's 25, it shows 22, almost the 23
like the other one so it's almost precise
but if you saw, this one is more exact or more precise
So now lets suppose you want
to fix your tire where you are
and to do that, we'll be using this kit we showed you at the beginning of the video
however you need to keep in mind that
in order to use this kit in a place that's not your home
you need a portable air compressor
like the one we showed you
so you can inflate the tire
you can buy this kit online
sometimes it only comes with these two handtools
and with... well I don't know how you call this thing.. with the
patching plug you'll be introducing
and sometimes it doesn't come with this cement
but it'll work just fine even if it doesn't come with the cement
when applying you're going to use some strenght
in our case here's where the cause of the flat tire is
we can recognize the screw is here.. Well, because we put it in there ourselves
but let's suppose it's anywhere in the front tire
well you don't need to remove the tire to do this process
if the flat tire is in the rear
in that case you will have to remove the tire to do this process
these are the only two tools this kit has
this one is used to prepare the area
where the whole was made because of a nail or screw
and this one is used to
introduce the patching plug
what we'll do first, before removing the screw
because once we do that it'll start leaking all the air
we'll introduce the patch stick through here
if you see here
in this part where we're going to insert the stick
there's a groove or an opening
this will help us remove
the tool
once we've introduced the patch plug
these patches are very sticky
and you can insert them with your hands
or with some pliers
you insert the patch here
and pull it half way through
once we've done this, we'll leave it like that
so it's ready to be use once we remove the screw
Let's suppose the screw's head is
worn out because you're driving with it
you could use some pliers to pull it out
and you can slowly remove it
by turning it around
but because our screw is new, we can remove it like this
(Should've inserted a smaller screw, right?)
now we're going to insert this
this tool
while using some strength
and this will help us prepare the area
to insert the patch plug
if your kit has cement
you'll apply a little bit of that cement
in this part here
to the plug
but as I was saying, some kits don't come with
this cement and these patch plugs are also sold
separately if you've already bought the tools
so this is ready now
we'll insert the patch
we'll introduce the tool all in
and when the patch plug is over 3/4 in
what we'll do is
pull the tool very
- very fast
and this way
we've successfully patched the tire
we'll let the plug dry and seal completely
and once some time has passed, say 10 min
we'll then start inflating the tire
after 10 minutes, you can be 100%
sure the tire's fixed
if you're not at home, you may not have a knife
or scissors to cut the excess
like how I'm doing it here
but if you can't do it, don't worry
once you start driving with it
this kind of patch will vulcanize
and the excess that might be coming out
will fall of without affecting the patch
so now the last part is to inflate
the tire once again
to the required PSI which in our case was?
-- 38
38 PSI. Thank you!
if you want to make sure it's completely fixed
you can pour some soapy water
and check that's not producing any bubbles
and if it doesn't make bubbles it means it's completely sealed
38.5
it's a little bit over, but it's not something to worry about
it' not dangerous
we put the cap back in aaannd!
There!
We're finished!
as you can see, you can fix your tires yourself!
at any place and any moment
and you can have different alternatives
that'll help you get safely to your destination
in case you ever experience a flat tire
