HILLARY: Rapper and producer SpaceGhostPurrp and his Raider Klan contributed quite a bit
to today's rap scene, even though some MC's aren't fans of his.
ROB: SpaceGhostPurrp man, what's going on with that b?
ROCKY: F him, fuck him. Straight up.
X: You got my respect at the end of the day, you a bitch ass nigga, but you still
got my respect for what you were, you know I got "Fuck Purrp" tatted on me.
HILLARY: There are plenty of mixed feelings surrounding Purrp but who is he and what's
he done to deserve all of this fuss?
HILLARY: Born Markese Money Rolle, SpaceGhostPurrp hails from the Carol City community of Miami,
Florida and is mostly known for founding Raider Klan in 2008.
PURRP: Raider Klan is something I came up with when I was 17.
It was about bringing everybody together, embracing black youth, promoting good talent.
HILLARY: Starting off with just SGP and his cousins, Raider Klan would expand
exponentially to become the first internet collective of its kind.
DENZEL: So SpaceGhostPurp came out with this tape called Blackland Radio 6.6, which created
a whole wave within the underground because after that he went to NY and him and Rocky linked up.
And, you know, it was Raider Klan, A$AP Mob and then Purp came back to Miami and that's when we met.
But we talked over the phone about the whole Raider Klan thing, and I was one of the first people to join.
PURRP: You had Raider Klan Atlanta, Raider Klan Miami, Raider Klan Memphis, Raider Klan
LA, Raider Klan New York.
You had all that shit in one thing, and we were in highschool making this shit, like,
this shit was fun.
HILLARY: Because Raider Klan had so many members join and depart the group, it's tough to say
just how many there were but it's easy to see their contribution—especially SpaceGhostPurrp's.
PURRP: I feel like I inspired a lot of people enough to bring back what I wanted to see
in rap and like, when you listen to Raider Klan music, you go'n see what I'm talking about.
HILLARY: SGP credited Three 6 Mafia's early 90's work as inspiration for his own
creations like 2012's "Mysterious Phonk."
JUICY J: When I first started listening to SGP, he reminded me of Lord Infamous—
RIP Lord Infamous—and Koopsta Knicca, Lord Infamous and Three 6 Mafia.
Like his videos, the way he had the skullcap on, the whole vibe.
And then his beats was sounding like old Three 6 Mafia beats.
So I thought that was cool coming from a young dude like that, you know.
HILLARY: Today, Three 6 is enjoying a cultural resurgence, which can be traced back to Purrp.
HILLARY: Even the goth vibes of rappers like Lil Uzi Vert and XXXTENTACION can be traced
back to SGP, who faced the same battle to express himself, saying quote:
HILLARY: In 2011, A$AP Rocky and the A$AP Mob
started a short-lived friendship with SpaceGhostPurrp and Raider Klan.
PURRP: He hit me up, and was like yo you inspire a lot of my shit. He dropped "Purple Swag"
after I dropped the "Blackland" shit, and I Aint go lie, yea I saw the influences.
HILLARY: Since both teams rocked gold grills and dark clothing that would eventually influence
hip-hop, and fashion at large, who began the trend is a never-ending battle between their fans.
This who-bit-who debate alongside some scuffles between crew members at shows and on Twitter,
ultimately ended the friendship.
HILLARY: And then there's the similarities between these two lines, which Purrp delivered first.
ROCKY: At the end of the day he know what it is and he trying to lie to people,
pumping that we took styles from him.
HILLARY: Meanwhile, it's clear that the hieroglyphic writing we've seen Rocky and
A$AP Mob use since 2012 was created by SpaceGhostPurrp, who said, quote.
HILLARY: Spaceghostpurrp's gripe with Rocky's admiration would bleed into other relationships.
YACHTY: He was like bro I'm gonna give you some beats, I got hella beats. This is Purrp talking to me,
Purrp was an underground legend, I was excited!
I started hanging out with A$AP Bari, Rocky and you know.
CARTI: I just signed to ASAP Rocky man, make some noise man, we lit in this bitch.
Fuck that nigga SpaceGhostPurrp, I don't fuck with that man.
HILLARY: Purrp also had a range of feuds with Raider Klan members including Yung Simmie,
Xavier Wulf and Denzel Curry, which seem to dispel any notion of the Raider Klan reuniting
after their last project in 2015.
XAVIER WULF: You can't have everybody but then not have like Purrp.
Which is what would happen.
Exactly I don't think he would.
And then he fucked up a bunch of relationships and shit so it just wouldn't work.
HILLARY: I'm Hillary for Genius News, bringing you the meaning and the knowledge behind the music.
