Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) is a technique used to quilt a sandwich
which has a top fabric, the batting and a baking fabric
and sewing free different shapes that you will control and manage
shapes that you control, and not your machine does
this technique could be done with your domestic sewing machines or industrial straight machines
I have already posted a video where I show you how to use your industrial straight machine for Free Motion Quilting
you could find it up here
Beside the special presser foot you need (depending on you machine model)
You got to ensure you prepare very well your sandwich
and watch out the thread you use
because when we do the Patchwork Top we might use regular cotton thread
Even though we can use regular thread in Quilting... but it breaks easily!
it is better using a machine embroidering thread
that kind of thread is more resistant because it has polyester
and makes the job easier and less tedious!
another think you need to watch is the upper and bobbin thread tension
to avoid nots and mess at the bottom of your quilt
with no further more lets start and move to my working table!
The first thing we will do is to practice with Pen and Paper
the idea is to draw curve lines without lifting your pen
in that way the curve should not touch themselves
and without a particular order, fill up all empty spaces... like that...
avoid line overlapping!
we continue with the practice excercise
this type of quilting is called "Stippling Stitching"
It is one of the most simple styles of Free Motion Quilting, and the first I learned
Materials Required
Now we will talk about the materials we will be using
a pair of Quilting Gloves
Rayon Thread or Machine Embroidery Thread
safety pins or regular pins
Free Motion Quilting Presser Foot
Spray Glue, I use the multipurpose one made by Stotch
My "Supreme Slider" that is a slippery mat very practical
and finally your Quilt Sandwich, that has the top layer, the batting (acrylic felt or cotton pressed material), and the backing fabric
STEP 1: Prepare the Sandwich
For this, we will first place the backing fabric, with the right side to the back
then we place the batting, and finally the top fabric
you could use the spray glue to baste the 3 layer of the sandwich
but do not do it on top of your cutting mat, because you'll ruin it... since it becomes very sticky
Notice that the backing is a bit bigger than the batting, and the batting is a bit bigger than the top layer
Then we secure everything with safety pins
in the other corner, too
STEP 2: Prepare the Sewing Machine
First you will need to adjust the Stitch size to the minimum possible
In my case, I can reduce it to zero
with this I will minimize the movement of the feed dogs
thread the machine with your rayon or polyester thread
I like this thread because it does not break so easily, while free motion quilting
however, you will need to put 100% Cotton Thread in you bobbin
I have discovered that this combination helps me avoiding 90% of the thread breakage
every time you start a new project, use a new needle
and adjust your Free Motion Quilting Presser Food tightly
I like using the Supreme Slider Mat to avoid friction between my sandwich and the table surface
so, I will have more freedom to move the quilted piece anywhere I need to
STEP 3: Let's start Quilting!
Wearing our Quilting Gloves, we need to introduce our sandwich under the presser foot
and carefully, let's lift the bobbin thread up, like this...
you could use a pin to help yourself bringing the bobbin thread up
this will help avoiding tangles and nots at the bottom of our sandwich
and so we will avoid an ugly bottom
then make 3 or 4 stitches on the same place, to secure the beginning
and so we start!
don't move too fast
try to control the speed with your pedal
you want to start with a medium speed
remember the exercise we made at the beginning with paper and pen
check the back side and ensure that tension is correct and you have no tangles
make stylized curves with no straight corners
you want to fill up empty spaces with harmonic curves
when you want to turn or make a pause, leave the needle down
and don't forget to check the back from time to time
try to not get out of the top layer edge
change your hand's position anytime you need it
in this case, I used a different color on my bobbin thread
so you could see the contrast with the upper thread
and to show you that a good thread tension is when the bobbin thread can not be noticed on the top layer and viceversa
if you have issues with the tension, what you need to do is experimenting a bit, and tighten it or loosen it, depending the case
at the end, make some stitches in the same place
to lock the end. Then take the quilted piece out.
let's check the back one more time
here I got some tangled thread
look
but overall it looks good!
Well, this is just an overview of this beautiful technique
there are so many variants of this technique
some easy, others more difficult
write down in the comments if you would like to learn more about it
my main advise: PRACTICE!
practice with any scraps, make practice sandwich
do not use your actual projects for practicing
practice with samples
and if it get damage, it doesn't matter
because you will need "to get used to the rhythm"
no joking, you will need to learn how to sync up brain with hands and footl!
to find the right speed
it is very important that you practice
do not get frustrated if at the beginning you can not get it, it is normal, everyone started like that
If I could show you my first one!
If it is your first time, I know you will have hard times
with the tension, thread issues,
feel free to write down a comment, you know I always answer your messages
type: "Grace, I can not make it"... and I will try to help you on the go!
it takes a while to master this technique
but once you got it...
...no one will stop you!
I leave you in the description box where can you find the presser foot for Free Motion Quilting
Make sure you buy the right one for your sewing machine model
We keep in touch and see you in another video.
