João´s story and his forest restoration challenge

JOÃO'S FOREST

With the restored areas fenced in, João

observes what is growing on his land

if there are bushes

if there are trees

and if there is variety of species.

Attention, João!

When observing natural regeneration

assess whether the area is closing

if the density and diversity of native trees is increasing

and if there is no species that could disrupt this process.

Remembering that, as we saw in video 1

João's area is close to fragments of forest

which increases its potential for natural regeneration.

João observes natural regeneration happening in his area

but he realizes that there are several gaps in the vegetation

parts without regeneration.

He also realizes that he has little variety of plant species.

In areas with no regeneration

João can choose to wait longer

maintaining the area fenced in

or making densification

with complementary planting of plant seedlings and seeds.

Everything will also depend, on João's time expectation.

João also realizes that in several parts

the grass is growing among the bushes and trees

hindering natural regeneration.

weeding the grass around the regenerating species

But not all areas have natural regeneration

highlighting regions of ancient history

of land use and occupation by agriculture and livestock

especially

in regions with large tracts of agricultural areas, using agrochemicals.

If this is your case

go to video 3

and follow the story of forest restoration

without natural regeneration.

But before you click on another story

see how beautiful João´s forest looks

Ep 5: It´s time to plant! - Duration: 4:36.

João´s story and his forest restoration challenge

It's time to plant!

Having the soil prepared, it's time to plant!

But how to do the planting?

Using seedlings or seeds?

It's fundamental to a successful planting

the quality of seedlings and seeds that will be used.

As most of the Brazilian forests

present a great diversity of species

to seek this variety in the planting

is a strong requirement for the forest to recover.

It's also very important

to think about and plan the distribution of the species in the area

Here I planned to use fast-growing trees

that provide shade to the soil in interspaced lines

with a mixture of green manure.

After one year, I´ll substitute the fertilizer line with native species

the fertilizer line with native species

that grow more slowly and remain in the forest longer

Planting seedlings in plantations is usually done

alternating lines of species that will grow fast and cover the soil

and slower growing species.

The planting lines

can be mechanically opened

with tractor and subsoiler

semi-mechanized, with motocow

manually with a digger.

It's important that the seedling's neck stay on the same level as the soil

and that the roots are in contact with the soil.

It's possible to plant seeds together with the seedlings

both green manure that improve soil quality and make quick shading

as well as native species.

Muvuca is a mixture of seeds from several species with sand

Its planting can be done at random or in rows.

For random planting or hauling

it's necessary to grill the soil and throw the seeds

manually or with a seed dispersal

Finally

it's important to grill the area again with a leveler to cover the seeds.

The planting in lines can be done in small pits

or in open lines with subsoiling.

Planting done.

The monitoring stage becomes essential to follow

how the degraded area is reacting to the process

and the intention of the forest restoration.

It's time for continuous monitoring

to verify that the methods applied are working

whether to make some adjustments

or the methodologies can be improved.

João wanted a forest that embraced

the spring back.

He also saw in the forest a way of growing, profiting.

Luiz

Homero

Sonia

Marília and Cícero

also invested in the restoration

surpassing the technical challenges

and each one with their own reasons.

These are successful stories

hat have transformed historically degraded areas

into living ecosystems, which bring mutual benefits

to people, nature and property.

It's possible!
