I'm in London right now
with a famous arbiter :
Stéphane Escafre.
is chief referee of the chess world championship !
Hello Stéphane Hello Etienne
How well are you doing in London
Everything is perfect in London, Sunny in the morning, rainy in the afternoon...
Small incidents but nothing really special.
So you anticipated my question about weather
You are the arbiter of the world championship : when were you selected
and when did you learn ?
Fide President selected me
right after his election
It was during the Chess Olympiad in Batumi,
2 months ago.
So I said you're famous amongst referee
Since when you are an International referee Stephane ?
International Arbiter since 2002
Now, I even have the right to teach IA...
Ok, so you can do everything !
You are referee, trainer, very nice !
So I'm going to change the screen arrangements, we can now look at some photos
It's better for everybody.
What is a "normal" day for an arbiter during the WCC ?
There's no typical day
There's 12 games, every game is independant and different.
At the beginning, I spent time on particular problems
like "lights",
"room temperature"...
Anything related to logistics
During rest day, one can go for shopping, have a walk...
When the tournament is under way, it's possible to enjoy London
In the morning, I've to answer questions from the player's team (coaches, manager etc...)
So there's no typical day, sorry !
On Friday, it's rest day, isn't it ? Yes, now it's one game, one rest day, one game...
At the beginning it was 2 games and 1 rest day...
... now that we reach the end of the championship, it's one game and one rest day...
Tomorrow is a free day.
yes, abolutely normal : tomorrow is Black Friday and you will go out for shopping ! ;-)
Concerning the competition, did you have specific demands ?
Yes we had a lot of specific demands... Ah !
but I cannot say a word about them... Oh !
Ok, very good !
You have to ask me again after the championship !
During the WCC, I have a duty of confidentiality.
Ok, I understand.
So we are going to show you a video
of the beginning of
the first round
when the British actor Woody Harrelson played the move of Fabiano.
Let's have a look !
We see that the comedian dropped the white King
, which can be interpreted as a sign of resignation by amateurs...
but professionnal players never do that,
you know this Etienne.
He did it on purpose (we ask him) :
he wanted to joke a little bit...
and the players took it easy.
Close to me, the FIDE President (NDLR : Arkady Dvorkovich) who smile as well
But the,
He did a mistake on the first move that Caruana wanted to play
Oh, yes ?!?
He put a wrong move on the board
And of course I allowed Fabiano to take back this move
(Caruana asked me if he could play something else)
Fortunately I anticipated this possibility during the technical meeting.
If the VIP doesn't play the right move, the players could of course take it back.
Fine.
Let me add something.
I say : the VIP plays the move
and only then we start the clock.
What happened when the VIP plays the move is not really part of the game.
