Jose Mourinho expects backing from Ed Woodward in the January transfer market as the club bid to get their season back on track

It's been a whirlwind season so far for Man United with the spotlight firmly on matters off the field as much as on it

Mourinho was at the centre of a public bust-up with Paul Pogba after stripping the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy

That was marred with a wretched run of results that saw United make their worst ever start to a Premier League season after seven matches saw the Portuguese on the brink of being sacked

There is now hope that United have turned the corner after picking up seven points from their last three matches, which started with a memorable comeback against Newcastle

Now Mourinho is desperate to bolster his squad when the window re-opens and a new centre-back is the priority

That is according to the MEN, who claim Mourinho expected executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to make amends for his failure to sign big-name players in the summer

United were outpriced by Inter Milan in the summer after enquiring about Slovakian Milan Skriniar, valued at £75million

The club were also unsuccessful in their pursuit of Harry Maguire who impressed at the World Cup with England, the defender has since signed a new contract at the King Power Stadium

They also struggled to sound out a deal for Spurs contract rebel Toby Alderweireld, but could return for the Belgian who is approaching the last six-months of his contract

United have already conceded 17 league goals, a total they did not reach until the 25th game of last season when they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham on January 31st

Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty at Old Trafford means that David de Gea has kept just one clean sheet in the opening ten league matches

"We are not as solid as I would like, we are not as rock solid as I would like, we don't have the killer instinct I would like," Mourinho said

"Some teams with three chances score three goals and some teams without the ball can resist and keep clean sheets all the time

"For us in this moment is almost impossible to keep a clean sheet even with the phenomenal goalkeeper we have and to score goals is really difficult for us

" Mourinho has yet to settle on an established partnership at the heart of his defence

Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling - who gave a penalty away against Everton - have started the last three matches

Phil Jones has had limited opportunities while Eric Bailly's United career looks to be nearing its end, he hasn't featured since being substituted after 19 minutes against Newcastle

Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp makes Aaron Ramsey decision with star to leave Arsenal - Duration: 3:14.

Ramsey's future at Arsenal has been in jeopardy since last year with his contract expiring in June 2019

It emerged in September that Arsenal had ended talks with the Welshman over a new deal, despite the player's confidence that a deal could Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey has since expressed his desire to see out his contract in north London, however, meaning he will be a free agent come the summer transfer window after 11 years at Arsenal

With many clubs circling for the 27-year-old's signature, the hunt has already begun to offer Ramsey the most attractive overtures

Liverpool will not be one of those clubs, though, because of two reasons, the Mirror reports

The Merseyside club have been favourites to welcome Ramsey, who would follow in the same footsteps as former Gooner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

But it has now emerged that Ramsey "doesn't fit the profile" of midfielders that Jurgen Klopp is seeking

The German coach has bought many youthful players since his arrival at Anfield, and Ramsey - who turns 28 on Boxing Day - does not fit that policy

In fact, only two of the 17 players Klopp has signed so far have been older than the attacking midfielder will be at the start of next season

The second reported reason is because of Ramsey's extensive injury history. In March 2010, a then-19-year-old Ramsey broke his leg in a horror tackle from Ryan Shawcross

That sidelined the midfielder for 248 days, but Ramsey has had 14 spells out since then for different and recurring injuries

Klopp believes Ramsey is at an injury-prone age, too, after seeing first-hand how Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana have suffered at a similar time in their careers

If Ramsey joined Liverpool, he would be hard-stretched for playing time, too. With the signing of Fabinho in the summer, the Reds now have seven players all vying for the three midfield positions

Despite Ramsey's moderate success at Arsenal, he has won three FA Cups and scored 59 goals in 341 appearances for the club, it is unlikely he would usurp a trusted - yet arguably less talented - Ramseyplayer such as James Milner or Jordan Henderson in the starting line-up

Arsenal news: Unai Emery praised by Sky Sports pundit for doing ONE thing - Duration: 3:08.

Emery took over in north London following the departure of Arsene Wenger in the summer

After losing the opening two Premier League games to Manchester City and Chelsea, Emery led the Gunners on a run of 11 wins in a row

That streak came to an end with a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday though Arsenal found the winning formula again to beat Blackpool in the Carabao Cup in midweek

The Gunners had stagnated somewhat under Wenger, finishing outside the Premier League top four for the past two seasons

But the goals are flowing in the historic Arsenal way under Emery and Nicholas has praised the Spaniard for that

Nicholas told Sky Sports: "After the first two games of the season I thought it was going to be another tough watch this season, but since then they've played really well and gone on a great run - Emery really seems to be getting his ideas across and the players are buying into it

"They're still some way off the title challengers but I think the best thing I can say about them is they've brought the joy and excitement back to the Emirates

"I watch Arsenal now and I'm expecting goals and entertainment and that fun factor is well and truly back - for an Arsenal man like me that's great to see and a very pleasant surprise

" Arsenal face one of their toughest challenges of the season this weekend when they host Liverpool

And Paul Merson thinks it could see Emery suffer his first loss since August. Merson told Sky Sports: "I can't see anything but a Liverpool win

"I think this is the day Arsenal show some big cracks. "I just think the defence is terrible, all over the place, and no different to what it was before

"If Hector Bellerin is injured, you're talking about Granit Xhaka at left-back, a central midfield player, and Stephan Lichtsteiner at right-back, who has been a good player but is nearly 35 now

"How many 35-year-old's are there in the Premier League? We saw Leicester rip Arsenal to shreds for 30 minutes; they scored, Harry Maguire missed a sitter, they had a stonewall penalty turned down

"Leicester's front three aren't even in the same class as Liverpool's. I just cannot see how Arsenal will live with them
