Waching daily Nov 2 2018

Arsenal boss Emery is aiming to get one over on Liverpool, who have enjoyed some positive results against the Gunners in recent years

The Emery era is, however, beginning to take shape with the club winning 11 of their last 12 matches

Arsenal were finally stopped from win No 11 last weekend with Crystal Palace emerging from a pulsating clash at Selhurst Park with a point to their name

Next up for the north London giants, though, is a huge test against Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's rampant Reds currently sit second in the Premier League table, behind Manchester City on goal difference

They are also one of three teams - Chelsea and Manchester City also - who are unbeaten at this stage

And Keown thinks Arsenal cannot afford to lose if they are to have any chance of making the top four

He told the Daily Mail: "I think this will be a 2-2 draw. "Liverpool will go for them but Arsenal have a formidable home record

"If Arsenal want to make that step back into the top four, they cannot afford to lose this game

"The fans want to see Arsenal getting results against the big teams." Known also believes Arsenal are playing a risky game by allowing Aaron Ramsey to leave the club after 11 years

"From the club's point of view, they have made a decision and are not letting themselves be dictated to by a player," he added

"If they wanted to keep him, they surely would have left the door open and tried to find a solution financially

"I expect Ramsey to continue to be 100 per cent committed to the cause. "He is a fantastic professional who will give everything to the football club

"But I do find it staggering that the contract offer has been removed. "When you think about how much it will cost to replace a player like Ramsey, it is astonishing that he will be allowed to leave

"The club must have already identified targets who they feel represent better value for money

"In an interview at the weekend, Raul Sanllehi - Arsenal's head of football - said that they started identifying last summer's signings in February and March

"At that time, Arsene Wenger was still in charge. Unai Emery had not been appointed

"Who is making the decisions on transfers? And how privy is the manager to these decisions?"

Esanbe Hanakita Kojima is believed to have been eroded by wind and drift ice

Esanbe Hanakita Kojima is believed to have been eroded by wind and drift ice

Japan could see its territorial waters shrink near its maritime border with Russia after a tiny island off its north-east coast "disappeared".

The uninhabited islet, called Esanbe Hanakita Kojima, is thought to have slipped beneath the waves, apparently unnoticed by residents living in Sarufutsu, a village on the northern tip of the main island of Hokkaido 500 metres away.

Esanbe is one of 158 uninhabited islands that were given names by the Japanese government in 2014 in an effort to clarify its territorial reach and extend its exclusive economic zone.

Japan's outlying islands have taken on increasing significance amid territorial disputes with China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea.

Esanbe Hanakita Kojima lies west of the Northern Territories, which are at the centre of a long-running dispute between Japan and Russia, where they are known as the Kurils. The islands were seized from Japan by Soviet forces days after the end of the Pacific War.

Locals were alerted to the islet's possible disappearance in September after the author Hiroshi Shimizu visited Sarufutsu to write a sequel to his picture book on Japan's "hidden" islands, according to the Asahi Shimbun.

He alerted the local fisheries cooperative, which sent boats out to its supposed location only to find it had gone missing.

Older fishermen told the Asahi they recalled seeing the island decades ago but later avoided the area because navigation systems recorded it as an undersea reef.

The Japan coastguard said that when the island was last surveyed in 1987 it protruded just 1.4 metres above the surface, leading experts to conclude that it had been eroded by wind and drift ice that form in the Sea of Okhotsk every winter.

International law defines an island as a "naturally formed area of land, surrounded by water, which is above water at high tide".

The coastguard is to visit the area to determine the island's fate. If it confirms that it has indeed disappeared, Japan's EEZ will shrink, albeit by just half a kilometre.

Japan isn't the only country to have lost an island recently. A piece of the United States was wiped off the map after East Island, a remote spit in Hawaii, was washed away by Hurricane Walaka last month.

Should We Be Scared of Bats? - Behind the News - Duration: 4:25.

It is me!

No, not you, Dracula. Aw!

I'm talking about bats.

These creepy critters have been sweeping across our screens

trying to freak us all out

for a long time now.

But in real life, are bats really so bad?

So, I thought I'd better find out the real truth

about these funny little creatures

from someone who likes them so much

she even comes to their rescue when they're in trouble.

Her name is Katrina, or as I like to call her, Bat Woman.

(THUNDER RUMBLES)

That was weird.

OK, Amelia, welcome to my little bat cave or my bat room.

As you can see, Katrina is a big fan of bats...

Are you my little bat?

..er, actual bats.

They really do get a bad rap.

I think people look at it as though they're vampire bats.

We don't have vampire bats over here.

They've got pretty mean teeth

but they need those teeth to chew up their prey.

She takes in the injured animals and nurses them back to health

and right now she has four little microbats.

They're exactly what they sound like - teeny-weeny flying mammals,

and there are more than 800 species

of microbat in the world.

Look at that face!

Only a mother could love it.

(LAUGHS) No, they're beautiful.

Katrina gets a lot of calls to help bats around this time of year,

not because it's Halloween,

but because they are all coming out of hibernation,

ready for breeding season.

So they come into my care.

I warm them up a little bit, give them a few drops of water,

some meal worms and fatten them up and then I release them

back into the wild within about a week.

Katrina says it's really, really important

not to touch a bat if you find one.

Some do carry disease,

not so much down here in South Australia

but more up in the tropic areas.

And they will bite you, they will give you a nasty little nip

and they will scratch you and we don't want that to happen at all.

Yeah, that's why I'm keeping my distance.

Except...

How about we go and feed him?

Oh, yes. Yeah, let's do it.

Are you hungry?

Whee!

So this was a bit grosser than I expected,

but a bat's got to eat.

Unlike bigger bats, microbats find their food using echolocation.

They send sound waves out from their mouth or nose

and when those waves hit an object, they echo back.

The nocturnal animals also use it to find their way in the dark.

So it's very important 'cause they can't see very well.

So they really depend on this echolocating to get them around.

Around 43 out of 70 Australian bat species

are threatened or vulnerable.

While predators like big birds and cats are a problem,

drought and destroyed habitats are bigger ones.

The biggest one is deforestation.

Chopping down the areas where they live to build housing

is a big problem.

That's why this bat lover says it's more important than ever

to care about these, actually quite cute, little creatures.

Some of these bats, there are not too many of them left,

so we need to conserve as many as we can

and get them back out there into the wild.
