Devils fall to Sabres in overtime | Rapid reaction
Rasmus Ristolainen scored the game-winning goal with 2:23 left in overtime to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-3 win over the Devils on Friday at the Prudential Center in Newark.
The game went to overtime after the Sabres erased a two-goal deficit over the final 21 minutes of regulation.
The Sabres tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period when forward Jack Eichel scored his second of the game off a one-timer from the left circle on the power play at 11:04.
Taylor Hall appeared to give the Devils a 4-3 lead moments later, when he finished a beautiful move at the right post.
But the Sabres challenged the play, saying Hall was offside when the puck crossed the blue line.
The review overturned the goal.
The Devils scored twice in the second period, taking the lead for good, despite two goals from the Sabres.
After former Devil Jacob Josefson tied the game at 1-1 on a breakaway goal at 5:27 of the second, Marcus Johansson put the Devils back up with a power-play goal.
Johansson blasted a one-timer from the right circle off a feed from defenseman Sami Vatanen for his fifth goal of the season at 8:34.
Three of Johanssons five goals this season have come against Buffalo.
The Devils doubled their lead at 14:55 when John Moore scored from the left point.
Moore scored off a Brian Gibbons pass, and he used a screen set by Brian Boyle in front of the net to find a gap.
The Sabres pulled back within 3-2 when Eichel tipped a high shot over Schneider at 18:05 for his first of the game.
The Sabres scored twice in the second period on just three shots.
Miles Wood opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season, giving the Devils a 1-0 advantage at 13:35 of the first period.
After Sabres goalie Robin Lehner saved a dangerous Pavel Zacha shot, a mad scramble ensued around the net.
Wood eventually punched the puck through the madness.

The Devils end the 2017 calendar year with the first game of a four-game road trip.
The will visit the Washington Capitals in another key Metropolitan Division game at 7 p.m.
