NHL NEWS - Backlund hits 500 club, his NHL career a lesson in 'patience' - Duration: 8:17.

Backlund hits 500 club, his NHL career a lesson in 'patience'

The details are fuzzy.

Time, new experiences and new perspectives will do that.

But what Brent Sutter does remember about that exit interview with Mikael Backlund — an uncomfortable conversation that the Calgary Flames centreman will probably never forget and often refers as the moment when things turned around for him — is that he knew that the Swedish centreman had what it took to be a solid, 200-ft.

, two-way National Hockey League player.

Backlund was smart and had skill.

But after a terrible, injury-riddled 2011-12 campaign that saw him break his finger in practice and separate his shoulder in mid-February, the former Kelowna Rockets pivot was floundering.

"He was young then, when I coached him," the former Flames head coach recalled, calling on his way home from a Red Deer Rebels practice and far removed from the NHL team he coached from '09-12.

"To me, what Mikael went through is what a lot of young players went through.

A lot of those young guys are in awe of playing in the NHL.

They're making good money, and they're living the life of luxury.

They like to have fun when they get into the league.

And it's OK to have fun, but they have to understand there's a commitment and a level of consistency.

And basically, they're learning the importance of staying grounded and not forgetting what it took to where you got to and the people that helped you get there.

"But you have to have a direction and a path, and you can't be all over the map.

Sutter told him as much when the Flames season was over in the early springtime of '12.

But the young and impressionable 23-year-old Backlund did not interpret it that way.

"It was hard at the time," said Backlund, who'd just wrapped up his second full year in the NHL.

"End of the year, a tough year… two injuries.

I missed 41 games.

And when I played, I didn't play well.

Just overall, it was the time of my life when I was trying to find my way — on and off of the ice.

It was a good wake-up call.

"Hard at the time. But he was right on.".

And it makes his upcoming milestone all the more impressive.

Backlund is on the verge of playing his 500th NHL game on Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks, ringing in the new year in style.

It'll also, of course, be his 500th game in a Flames jersey, the only NHL team for which he's ever skated since being drafted 24th overall in '07.

"It almost feels like it was yesterday, but it'll be 11 years ago this summer," said the 28-year-old who is now the Flames' shut-down centreman on their second line.

"Time definitely flies by. "Very cool.

I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, for sure.

It's a big milestone for me, reaching 500 games over seven years.

It's very cool.".

With 101 goals and 148 assists in 499 games, the 28-year-old has been a mainstay on the Flames' second line for the past two years and a reliable shut-down centreman basically since his chat with Sutter in the summer of 2012.

"There were times when I didn't think I was going to have too many more games in the NHL," Backlund said.

"Times were really tough.

But that definitely makes you feel even better to still be in the league and playing a big role on the team after a lot of ups and downs.

"I never thought I would play 500 games.

But here he is.

Under former head coach Bob Hartley, Backlund had a career year in goals, assists and points in '15-16 with 21 tallies, 26 assists and 47 points in 82 games.

Then, last season under Glen Gulutzan, he scored 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 81 games.

It's been a quieter year so far (with eight goals and 14 assists in 38 games), but the progression has been impressive, and what Backlund does on a nightly basis doesn't always show up on the scoresheet.

"The flaw in our league is that it's not a patient league," said Gulutzan.

"We hype up 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds, and some, rightfully so.

Some, they're 17 and 18 and we put all this pressure on them.

But the reality is not every 18-year-old develops at the same rate.

And it's a lesson for Calgary in patience with a player, drafted in the first round.

"The organization stuck with him, and he put in the work — and now he's a good player.

That's the way it should be.".

All of it, from afar, makes Sutter proud.

"I'm proud of all of my players that I've coached, when they dial themselves in and make themselves better," Sutter said.

"Backs was just a young kid and just learning all of those things.

You knew as he grew up and got older, if he was in the right frame of mind, he'd have a long career.

"And he's turned out to be a heckuva hockey player.

I'm not at all surprised by that.".

NHL NEWS - Red Wings' Nielsen makes points as shootout star - Duration: 5:46.

Red Wings' Nielsen makes points as shootout star

Detroit — Say what you will about the shootout, and whether it's good or bad for hockey, a great or terrible way to decide an outcome of a game.

But those are important points, and if you have a player who is effective at it, you have an important piece.

Frans Nielsen fits that description aptly.

Nielsen scored the lone shootout goal Friday in the Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

The shootout goal was Nielsen's 47th in his career — making him the NHL all-time leader — in 94 attempts (50 percent) and it was his 21st game-deciding shootout goal, also an NHL best.

"It's an asset.

It gives you points, and they're big points," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said.

"Here, and the course of his career, I'm sure he's accumulated a lot of points for us and the (New York) Islanders.

"Last year our fortunes changed a lot in shootouts and a large part of it was because of Frans.

Our goaltenders have really worked hard at their games, getting better at the shootouts, but certainly Frans, and last year Thomas Vanek, helped change the fortunes of that.

"You can say whatever you want about the shootout, about 3-on-3 (overtime), they're both entertaining.

But the points are real.

You got to find a way to get the points.".

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was one of the few goalies Nielsen hadn't victimized in the shootout, so Friday's goal had added significance.

Not a prolific goal-scorer otherwise — he has nine goals this season — Nielsen keeps a simplified approach to the shootout.

"I've definitely stuck with the same couple of moves through the whole time, just doing stuff I'm comfortable with," Nielsen said.

"For the most part I've kind of made up my mind before I go in.

In the beginning I went backhand every single time until they started figuring it out.

"So, I had to start shooting.

At least they didn't know I'd do that every time.

It's a little bit of a mind game with the goalies, too.".

RED WINGS SCHEDULE. Defending champs.

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins are Sunday's New Year's Eve opponent, but they aren't looking like the champs right now.

Pittsburgh (19-17-3) has looked like a team that's played a ton of hockey over the last two seasons, and hasn't been helped by key injuries and offensive slumps.

If the playoffs began today, the Penguins would not qualify.

"They still have a lot of really good players, a couple in particular (Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin)," Blashill said.

"If the ice is easy for Pittsburgh it's a tough night, so we better make sure we make it hard ice for them.".

Mantha ailing.

Forward Anthony Mantha (undisclosed) will likely miss his second consecutive game after not practicing in Saturday's optional skate.

Blashill termed Mantha as day-to-day at this point.

"It's not anything I'm overly worried about but questionable for (Sunday)," Blashill said.

Penguins at Red Wings. Faceoff: 7 p.

, Sunday, Little Caesars Arena.

TV/radio: FSD/WXYT 97.

Outlook: The Penguins (19-17-3) are 4-6 over their last 10 games and out of a playoff position.

… RW Phil Kessel leads offensively with 16 goals, 25 assists, 41 points.
