Chelsea transfer news: Danny Drinkwater a shock Blues target to replace midfielder Nemanja Matic

CHELSEA have earmarked Danny Drinkwater as a potential Nemanja Matic replacement, according to reports. Serbia international Matic, 28, yesterday completed his £40million move to Manchester United on a three-year deal.

Leicester ace Danny Drinkwater is a shock target for Chelsea this summer. Nemanja Matic left Chelsea for Manchester United in a £40m deal.

Blues boss Antonio Conte has already signed Monaco ace Tiemoue Bakayoko to strengthen his midfield, but wants more reinforcements for a season in the Champions League.

Leicesters Drinkwater, 27, is being considered, according to Sky Sports, as is Bayern Munich starlet Renato Sanches, who Conte has already enquired about.

The 2015-16 Premier League-winner would join up with old team-mate NGolo Kante at Chelsea should he move to Stamford Bridge.

Drinkwaters deal at the King Power does not run out until 2021, having signed a long-term contract in August.

Meanwhile, Conte warned £65m signing Alvaro Morata to toughen up if he is to be a success in his first Premier League season.

He said: Alvaro needs to improve. He needs to improve his physical condition and understand our idea of football.

Antonio Conte is eyeing a new midfielder to replace Nemanja Matic.

Chelsea have already signed Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Danny Drinkwater won the Premier League with Leicester in 2015-16.

For sure he has a great will to train, to try to improve quickly. There are only six days before we play our first official game and then we start out league campaign.

Danny Drinkwater could link up with old Leicester team-mate NGolo Kante at Chelsea.

Antonio Conte has warned £65m signing Alvaro Morata to toughen up. But I am pleased with his commitment, and his will and efforts to learn our idea of football very quickly.
